Quote of the Day: Gegard Mousasi Discusses Move Up in Weight

1222181905_medium

First I felt that the speed and explosiveness weren’t as good as they were before but it all came back by now. I feel stronger than ever. Definitely, it took some time but I feel myself very confident at this weight so I don’t think I will have problems in my future fights. I could have gone to Russia to train with Fedor but it turned out otherwise. I’d like to test myself with him now that I weigh more.

-- Gegard Mousasi, talking with M-1 Global about his move up to light heavyweight from middleweight and ultimately to heavyweight.

As a side note, Mousasi stated that he currently weighs approximately 216 pounds. And though the fight has yet to be confirmed, he says that Sokoudjou will likely be his next opponent at DREAM.9.

I thought Soko and his camp turned that fight down?

I don’t see him doing any good against Mousasi anyhow. Do you?

by Wookalarman on Apr 26, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I sort of thought it had been nixed, also. That’s just what Mousasi is saying. Whether he’s correct or not, I have no idea.

It’ll be fun to see how far Mousasi can go in the most stacked division in the sport.

That's a tough fight for Sokoudjou

There was a post here a few weeks ago with a quote from Team Quest saying the fight wouldn’t be in Soko’s best interest right now.

Nice find.

Can’t wait to see how Mousasi looks at LHW. He looked great wrecking Musashi in K-1 rules at 215.

I’ll be really interested in seeing who Mousasi fights at DREAM.9, if he fights any one at all. Hoping he gets a good fight, though.

Also, Sokoudju shouldn’t be slept on. He’s got one punch knock out power…so he’s always got a shot. That being said, I hope he skips the Mousasi fight for now…

At the same time, who would fight Mousasi at light heavyweight instead?

Filho?

The guy that talks to imaginary people in the cage?

Oh, Paulo. Ok. I think this would be a good fight for him.

by Wookalarman on Apr 26, 2009 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah…but Filho is a smaller Middleweight…I can’t imagine him looking acceptable at Light Heavyweight.

by AnonymousA on Apr 26, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a short middleweight, but not a light one. He wants to fight at 205, he’s made that quite clear. And he’s booked for Dream 9 apparently. Makes sense to me.

I think Soko could eventually be a force if he really tries.

Was the Mousasi upkick more luck, or skill? I’d be interested to hear what people think a rematch would result in with Jacare.

by Farthammer on Apr 26, 2009 10:39 PM EDT reply actions

My opinion is all upkicks are pretty much luck.

by Wookalarman on Apr 26, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude, nothing is luck in MMA. Absolutely nothing. You do whatever you can to win.

This is a terrible fight for Soku. If he wins it’s great, but he needs people that are in similar skill to him so that he can get a feel for things. I think that Gegard would eat him alive right now.

by Dooda on Apr 26, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

How many fights can you name that ended via upkick?

by Wookalarman on Apr 26, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That is compared to how many upkicks have been thrown in MMA.

by Wookalarman on Apr 26, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to be a smartass...

But was Cote tearing his knee out of nowhere luck for Anderson Silva, or skill?

Ok, maybe I am being a smartass…

by Farthammer on Apr 26, 2009 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions

It was luck…for Cote

Upkicks are the result of the upkickee, not the upkicker. Had Jacare not dove into Mousasi’s guard, this would be a non-question.

Him talking about wanting to fight Fedor at heavyweight caught my eye, he hasn’t even fought at light heavyweight yet and he’s already targeting The Last Emperor? How very BJ Penn of him.

by who me on Apr 27, 2009 1:14 AM EDT reply actions

No, he wants to train with Fedor.

by Chris Nelson on Apr 27, 2009 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I could have gone to Russia to train with Fedor but it turned out otherwise. I’d like to test myself with him now that I weigh more.

big difference between test and train.

by who me on Apr 27, 2009 3:17 AM EDT up reply actions

uhh i think he means he wants to go to russia and train with fedor, so he coul test himself against him now that he’s heavier.. cause obviously if he went there and sparred with him as a MW, he wouldnt stand a chance..

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 27, 2009 5:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I know he’s with Red Devil I just read that in a different way that other people seems to be reading it. It sounds like he didn’t go to train with Fedor because he want’s to “test himself”. He didn’t say he wanted to train with Fedor he said he could of gone to Russia but he didn’t then he says in the next sentence he wants to test himself against Fedor.

by who me on Apr 27, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

He definitely meant train. Mousasi is part of Red Devil Int’l and is managed by Finkelstein.
