Your Saturday Night MMA Options
The MMA fan's cup runneth over tonight with three live regional shows to choose from:
Option 1: UWC 6: Capital Punishment from Fairfax, VA
streaming live on Sherdog.com at 6PM EST
My top pick for the evening (and hey, disclosure: I'm not an employee of the UWC). This is easily the most star-loaded (or at least prospect-loaded) card going tonight, with highly-touted UWC 135-pound champ Mike Easton (6-1) defending his newly-won strap against Josh "Taz" Ferguson in the main event, and the ever-controversial TUF alum War Machine (7-2) going against local standout Reshad Woods (4-1), whose five fights have not left the first round. As always, our own editor-in-chief Luke Thomas will be doing color commentary for the local broadcast and Sherdog stream; he'll also be updating the Bloody Elbow Twitter account live from cageside with results and pictures. Full fight card here.
Option 2: XFC 8: Regional Conflict from Knoxville, TN
live on HDNet at 9PM ET
Florida's homegrown success story, Xtreme Fighting Championships, makes its HDNet debut tonight with a card eminating from the University of Tennessee's Thompson-Boiling Arena. The main event is a featherweight title fight between Jarrod Card (7-3-1) and undefeated Bruce "The Noose" Connors (6-0), but even more entertaining will be the 205-pound bout between former Volunteers defensive end Ovince St-Preux (1-2) and debuting Floridian Ombey Mobley (4-0 amateur). Also watch out for the big boys in the heavyweight tilt between Christopher Barnett (0-0) and Jonathan Ivey (27-37), best known as the man who once dropped a "People's Elbow" in an MMA bout. Full card here.
Option 3: The Patriot Act 2 from Columbia, MO
streaming live on Purefight.org at 8PM ET
This card was supposed to feature Jeff Monson's fourth fight in five weeks, but that bout has apparently fallen through. No worries, though: former NCAA wrestling beast turned MMA prospect Ben "Funky" Askren (1-0) will now fight in the main event against Mitchell Harris (1-3). Since Askren is the only reason I have (or need) for checking this show out, I'll let BE member snet tim expound further:
Also fighting tonight is ATTs Lucas Lopes against CJ Fernandes. Lopes (8-8) has a strong background in Muay Thai and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu, I am excited to see him fight tonight. Fernandes has more experience with a record of 14-8-3, but I'm still going to go for Lopes to pull out the W.
Feel free to use this post as a discussion point for any of the three cards, and have a kick-ass Saturday night.

Ive streamed XFC events before and its usually pretty lackluster
could barely tell what was going on
from the forest itself comes the handle for the axe
Kyle Maynard is on as well.
Plus my boys Chris Lozano and Kenny Jackson are fighting on a NAAFS card in Akron (http://www.naafs.tv). Lozano’s opponent is 3-0 ammy in what should be Chris’s last amateur bout.
Oh yeah, how could I forget...
I guess I ruled out getting to see the Kyle Maynard fight live as an option when I found out it was $14.95 for the online stream.
But if anyone is interested: http://www.kylemaynardfight.com/

Okay, UWC starting for real now.
If you copy this URL into Windows Media Player, you don’t have to watch it in the tiny Sherbox.
I must say: it strikes me as odd that an MMA fan reading Bloody Elbow on a Saturday night would choose the “none” option in the poll. (Unless you have an NHL/NBA team in the playoffs or are watching Froch-Taylor, obv.)
Weird...

XFC is thankfully free of Lloyd Irvin infomercialism. On the other hand, the main event is Jarrod bloody Card.
Shockingly, the world did not explode and MMA is not outlawed in America now.

XFC was
Pretty damn good actually. Good shit, HDNet!

GREAT main event. I wanna watch it again because I was half trying to pay attention to the Maynard-Fry play-by-play.

It was, those guys have a ton of heart. I was kinda bummed out because there was no MMA (or so I thought) this weekend. I knew there was Boxing on HBO and UWC but I didn’t want to see any of those. Then luckily I logged in here and saw this pst :) FTW! I caught Pac/Hatton 24/7 (which was awesome, again) and then turned my to my DVR playlist which was recording the XFC. Bummer they didnt have a bigger turn out. It’s like cool stuff was happening in each fight. Crazy moves, comebacks and submissions!

Just got to say...
I just read the PBP for the Maynard fight. I have a sick sense of humor, I laugh at things that aren’t funny, and I piss alot of people off…but dude, I seriously feel for Kyle Maynard. That man fought to the best of his ability, and deserved to be in the ring, if just for this one time. Yeah he couldn’t get liscensed, the poor guy couldn’t even wear fucking gloves, but he still fought, and he deserves alot more respect than a great many people walking on two legs. He dosen’t need to prove anything more, and for the sake of the integrity of MMA, I do hope this is his only fight…but damn, for a guy that could go through what he’s been through, imagine what he could have done with 4 limbs…

Couldn’t wear gloves = couldn’t strike, making this tragicomedy even more tragilarious.

Then why didn’t any athletic commission on Earth sanction it?
by Derek Suboticki on Apr 26, 2009 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Athletic commissions are not infallible. He survived basically unharmed. I really doubt any opponent he was booked with would go in there with the intention of doing any more than edging out a decision.
And who knows, he could have shocked everyone and been for real. Then this would be one of the most inspirational stories in years, and it still is just because he went through with it and people believed in him enough to let him try.
If you really see this as funny or tragic, rather than something beautiful, then you are really missing the point.

Correct. Kyle Maynard is an impressive dude. Don’t feel bad for him. That little fucker was talking trash about my style before I fought Rory Singer. Am I the only one happy that he lost?
Wait you fought Rory Singer and Kyle Maynard was talking trash about you before it? Who are you and what was Maynard doing there?
by EazyEismydad on Apr 26, 2009 2:51 AM EDT up reply actions
crap. I meant to embed this… http://revver.com/video/234821/matt-masterson-vs-rory-singer-conclusion/
I was having trouble getting opponents. Then I had the rug pulled out from under me on 2 fights by Brian Ebersole… who I absolutely would love to fight. One in the IFL against Alex Schonauer and one in Australia against some other UFC vet, I forget his name. Then I blew out my shoulder sparring with Rogers and had it repaired the day before thanksgiving (repaired labrum and torn subscapularis muscle… double whammy).
I’ve been rehabbing and I just recently threw my first punch on a live opponent last night. It was my little brother Phil and it was his birthday. Happy birthday Phil… grow the fuck up!
The funny thing is… Forrest Petz, a guy who I have always looked up to in the sport, told me when I was new to it that Brian Ebersole was talking a bunch of trash on him because he was a little bit wild. That any wrestler would get a sure win over him.
And sure enough…
Fucking bitch was just scared of him.
So I don’t get it. Why was Maynard talking trash on you?
