Ricardo Arona Wants to Fight in the UFC

Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.

40_l_medium

In last month's issue of Tatame magazine, Dana White responded to a statement made by Ricardo Arona.

The currently unemployed unsigned MMA figher and former pride star, Ricardo Arona, saw this and wanted to clear things up and defend his previous statements.

He had this to say to Tatame:

"Certainly Dana White thought I was criticizing him, that I was talking bad about his event, but it wasn’t. I didn’t want to belittle the athletes of the UFC, that wasn’t my intention... I never had a direct position from him, I wasn’t contacted by the Ultimate. Dana White could give me an opportunity to know if I’m good or not".

I think that for him to even respond to this, Arona probably doesn't want to be on the bad side of the UFC president. The PRIDE star has been out of competition for a couple of years already and it is really surprising to find out that Dana and the UFC hasn't even contacted him yet. There may be several reasons for this, and we can speculate all we want, but one thing is for sure: Arona wants to fight in the UFC.

The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

I for one....

would love to see him there. I have always been an Arona fan.

I can’t stand Ricardo Arona. I would have loved to have seen him fighing Liddell at UFC 97.

I really do want to see him in the UFC. Him and Rogerio.

Insert GIF of Rampage powerbombing him to hell HERE..

I can’t do it on my work computer but I’m sure someone has it somewhere…

he got KO'd by the headbutt...

not to mention he was winning that fight

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And?

What does any of that matter? He attempted a triangle & was slammed thru the mat for his efforts.

and...

it would be good to see a rematch. page won the fight, the headbutt was unintentional, but because he got KO’d by the headbutt and NOT because of the slam, there should have been a rematch (and from my understanding, that type of slam would be illegal in the UFC, not sure though)… just my thoughts.

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that type of slam would be legal because the opponent is not being slammed head first.

And the only thing that Arona is popular for is being slammed thru the mat. Besides, with Rampage’s much improved striking and Arona’s non-existent striking why would this be interesting?

Wow dude

you think the only thing arona is famous for is for being slammed by page? WOW, that’s all I have to say about that. Arona was never a great striker and did well against strikers, so why wouldn’t it be interesting?

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I, as a long time big MMA fan of course know him.

But for the casual fan, yes, Arona is only known as the guy that Rampage slammed thru the ring. In the weight class he will be coming into they are primarily power strikers & Soku showed how well Arona does against strikers & Soku is at the bottom of that list & not even in the UFC.

the casual fan should not be consulted

It’s not up to the casual fan to bring fighters in the UFC, Arona is not known to the casual fan because he never fought in America. Fedor is not known to the casual fan, does that mean that the UFC shouldn’t have pursued getting fedor? They tried, but could not, but they tried because they know he’s the best HW. Arona beat many great strikers in the past, from wandy to hendo to overeem among others. You should consider Soko another houston Alexander, the guy beat two top 10 fighters in two consecutive fights very early on in the fight, that does not make him better than the fighters he beat in a shortly fashion. They got caught early. soko would not beat arona or lil’ nog 10 times out of 10, I say the other 9 he’d lose.

"the casual fan should not be consulted"

Are you serious? Why on earth would Dana/UFC pay likely big money to bring in a guy that the casual fan has no connection to?

by dnevil001 on Apr 23, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

because...

the UFC tries to bring the best fighters in the world to fight for the UFC, not the most popular. Casual fans didn’t know who anderson silva was before he was brought to the UFC. He can’t sell PPV that much (much less now after 97). but do you think the UFC will cut anderson silva? He’s not popular, but he’s the best…

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The UFC did have to pay big dollars to bring Silva over.

Arona is likely asking for big money & to get a return on their investment (remember this is a business & not just here to cater to hardcore fans) they need someone with name recognition. Just like the negotiations with Ishii (I think) the Judoka from Japan. They want him to bring the Japanese market over. And please do not compare Arona to the current champ Silva, that is ridiculous.

by dnevil001 on Apr 23, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

where did I compare the two?

I only said being popular alone will not land you fighting for the UFC, and a good example was silva. from my understanding, arona has had no communication what so ever with the UFC yet, your ‘asking for too much money’ theory is invalid.

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You stated "do you think the UFC will cut Anderson Silva"

Which maybe I misunderstood your meaning, but I took it as Silva not being mainstream the way Arona is not. Was that not accurate? Read your own statements pleas. And I have seen several MMA sources who indicated Arona is looking for big money, so your statement about my theory being invalid is ridiculous. You should read sometimes if you want to discuss this stuff.

where did you read he’s asking for big money? forget about it, you don’t need to reply. and my statement does not compare arona to silva, but I can’t force you to understand, if you can’t see it you can’t see it. Seems like you’re the type who likes to take cheap shots, so this is my last reply to you, have fun debating like a kid.

No one is taking any “cheap shots” at you so settle down. I do not have time to run around finding info for you. The info about Arona has been on this site for a few weeks now, so feel free to look around if you need proof. Unless you think that Arona is going to be cheap?

Arona is not niether world-class nor an exciting fighter to watch

So he’d only get chump change, which most Rising Sun journeymen have been reluctant to step down for. They’d have to build their market value from scratch against the also-boring-but-like-to-stand-and-bang wrestlers of the UFC who often can stall Brazilian grapplers out of the game. Then the grappler gets treated like shit for being one-dimensional, etc.

by asa on Apr 23, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's your opinion

but many of us like watching arona fight. Just because a guy might be ‘boring’ for a few doesn’t mean he’s boring for everybody. a great example is machida.

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida is undefeated & has ran thru a who's who list of MMA greats.

There is a world of difference between Machida & Arona.

You are seriously delusional or you are not able to comprehend your own writing.

When you are defending Arona & then you mention Machida as another “boring” fighter, that is the very definition of comparing.

by dnevil001 on Apr 23, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

listen

I’m not comparing arona to machida, nor arona to silva. I’m only showing how a supposedly ‘boring’ fighter to some can make it into the UFC. I’m not comparing both fighters, or saying they are similar, or that they achieved the same accomplishments, I’m only comparing their attributes for being seen as boring to some (when I mentioned machida), or no name recognition (when I mentioned silva). Again, I suppose you might still not understand, english is not my native language, but I seriously doubt there is something wrong with what I’m writing.

Actually...

Yes, he’ll always be that guy that got slammed by Rampage. I do know who he is… I have all of Ricardo Arona’s Pride fights on DVD…. he is an exceptional fighter, but he has done nothing out of the spectrum that others haven’t already done.

Besides becoming the closest person to actually beat Fedor. I will respect him for that, but he is remembered for being powerbombed to hell by Rampage.

by Gunslinger20 on Apr 24, 2009 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How do you know that the knockout is from the head butt and not the slam. I’d say, by looking at it that the head bouncing off the mat was pretty bad, not to mention all of Page’s weight on his torso.

Arona, in my opinion, is famous for bringing the yawn into every fight that he wasn’t slammed thru the mat or knocked into oblivion.

He does get some props for getting Fedor to decision and getting top control for a lot of that fight, but eegadz that was one hella boring fight.

by Dooda on Apr 23, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

watch the gif closely

as soon as they hit the floor, arona’s left arms is still holding page’s right arm after he hits the floor, but his arms goes up as soon as page’s head hits his chin. after the fight you could also see a huge gap between page’s eyebrows.

by orcus on Apr 23, 2009 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m with you here to a point. I don’t think there’s definitive evidence that the headbutt is the cause of the KO. Nonetheless, there’s clearly a headbutt there, and there is also no definitive evidence that it wasn’t the cause of the KO.

by FRANKIE on Apr 24, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair...

It was the illegal headbutt that knocked Arona out. While it was inadvertent, that’s how it happened.

Edit: Orcus beat me too it.

Everyone remembers the Rampage slam.....

Arona is a crazy Mo-FO though. I would love to see him fight in the UFC. I assume he never stopped training completely. I remeber him choking out “insert name here” and having a look in his eye that scared me through my TV.

i dont think anyone can blame the ufc for homeboy not having work. hes had all the time in the world to fight for somebody and hasnt. plus i havent heard someone say ‘arona’ without ‘steroids’ somewhere near the name in a long time.

The person who needs to be blamed is his manager.

aronas manager didnt make him disappear and surf. he comes out once or twice a year and is all like ‘yeah i think i want to fight but i really love to surf and i want to fight for a world title in the ufc.’ i dunno, he lost 3 of his last 4 fights. maybe he needs to set his sights a little bit lower? im not heated that he wants to get his money for some big fight and then go back and chill on the beach but he aint gonna get it like this. gotta put in work when no one knows or cares about you.

I think Arona with a cage and elbows is a pretty scary proposition.

by FRANKIE on Apr 23, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s a great top position grappler, true. On the other hand, he has practically non-existent striking and deficient takedowns (in terms of the American scene). He definitely could have worked on stuff since PRIDE, but in terms of how the Arona we’ve seen would do in the UFC, I’m not optimistic, but I am hopeful (I really dig Arona).

Could he make 185 lbs.? He is a pretty built dude (even though I think he’s only 5’10"), so I have my doubts, but I think he’d be much more stylistically competitive in that division.

If Arona wanted to be successful...

I think he’d have to cut to MW. I remember reading somewhere that he doesn’t cut much to make Light Heavy, his walking weight’s around 210-215. He’d still be a very built guy at 185, I think.

But yeah, Arona + Elbows and cage have the potential for success

I kinda would like to see a Shogun/Arona rematch. That and a rematch against Henderson. As well as a third fight against Wanderlei.

Damn, I want a lot.

To this day, I still believe he beat Fedor. The only guy to legitimately do so.

The problem with that fight is all he did was gain top position, and nothing from there on. At some point you have to only accredit so much for that. It didn’t even seem like he went for any submissions! Probably would have been an okay draw, but that he won that fight is stretching things a tad.

by Dooda on Apr 23, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arona’s style should fit in well in the octagon, good wrestling, dominate top position control ect… but i wonder if his lay-off will hurt him much. Conditioning? I think the long period in between fights hurt Shogun as much as the knee injuries themselves. Id love to see Arona get a few tune-ups to familiarize the US fans with him before he moves on to any Pride rematches or other big name fights.

I just hope he doesnt go the Crocop rout with an easy Eddie Sanchez-like beatdown followed by hype spoiling Gonzaga-like upset.

okay, that was a little harsh, and I meant “haven’t” but anyways, his style wouldn’t be well received by your average fan. His striking is weak, his fights are sometimes brutally slow paced, and he probably wouldn’t do well without the juice.
