Tom Atencio to fight at Prize Fight MMA: "Ultimate Chaos" on June 27

Tom-atencio-podium_medium

Yes, you read that right.. Tom Atencio is set to fight along side a rumored match-up between Bobby Lashley and Bob Sapp.

Percy Crawford of Fight Hype has the scoop,

Former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley is close to agreeing on a potential clash with former PRIDE and K-1 star Bob Sapp. The bout would headline a June 27th card, promoted by Brian Young's Prize Fight MMA, in Biloxi, Mississippi. Affliction VP Tom Atencio is also slated to make his return to active MMA competition on that same card against an opponent yet to be named.

Tom Atencio is 1-0 in his MMA career. He last fought way back at January of 2005, decisioning David Martinez, a 2-3 fighter.

Tom Atencio confirms it on MMA Fanhouse,

They don't think it's right for me to fight for my own event.. I love this industry and I just want to fight.

I love this sport and I am not a wannabe. I’ve fought before and I have respect for anyone who steps into the ring win, lose or draw. They’re doing something that most of the world will never do.

I think (it will be contested at) 160, maybe 155. Not sure I can make 155 at 42 years old.

UPDATE:

The card is official. Tom's opponent will be Randy Hedderick, an amateur who will be making his pro MMA debut.

The event entitled, "Ultimate Chaos" will be co-promoted by Prize Fight MMA and Fight Force International. It will take place at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum at June 27. Here is the official card from Fight Force:

i got shocked to read this at fight hype, and i was actually wondering why other blogs haven’t picked up on this..
i dont know how he intends to do it.. imagine, he’ll be promoting affliction, fly around the US for press conferences, and training for a fight at the same month.. and this is assuming that they don’t go head to head with the UFC and deal with extra more stress..

and i wonder how much press this promotion would get, having tom atencio, bob sapp, and bobby lashley, all on the same card.

I'd be shocked if it were true...

No way this happens…. I just don’t see it ever happening. I’ll believe it when I see it.

by Gunslinger20 on Apr 22, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t doubt that it’s true, and I guess I’m somewhat surprised, but I just don’t care.

Here’s a short clip of Tom in his one fight.

I don’t doubt that Atencio has fought before…. I believe that. I just doubt that he’ll actually fight anyone considering how “busy” he is trying to get the 3rd show going. I don’t see him being able to prepare for a fight and prepare putting on a PPV at the same time.

I also agree with you in the fact that I really just don’t care either…. I thought the Dana vs Tito boxing match was shit too.

Tom just replied to my text confirming his fight on June 27 in Biloxi MS. He also said he’s in Russia, Korea then Japan till the 2nd. He may want to ease up on the travel schedule as the fight approaches.

by No Shit MMA on Apr 22, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever people say about this guy they sure can’t claim he doesn’t keep busy.

by who me on Apr 22, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

too bad he doesn’t keep more busy being a promoter. i think this is just tom trying to prove something. since he can’t be a great promoter, like dana, he’s trying to prove that he’s a “real” fighter. lol.

Read it yesterday but I wasn’t shocked as there has been rumor’s of him fighting again floating around for a while. Affliction can cut out a press conference or two and give him enough time to get ready for a fight at the level he will be fighting at. I wonder if Affliction will be sponsoring him?

by who me on Apr 22, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe he’s using this as a warm up fight before he faces Fedor instead of Josh Barnett when they go head to head with UFC 100?

by Sam Cupitt on Apr 22, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

i think he’s using this as a warm up before he fights kyle maynard. j/k

Anyone know were he trains out of???

"I will fight for somebody else not Affliction," the 41-year-old Atencio said. "I have been wanted to fight for a long time. I just haven’t had time. I still don’t have time but I want to do it again."
. . .
Atencio isn’t expected to make much of a splash with his restarted fighting career to say the least. He’s just doing it for kicks.

More fighters are also scheduled to make this card very interesting.
Rizzo, Yvel, Atencio, Horodecki, Cooper, are all associated with Affliction, as well.

Hope the next event isn't in California for Horodecki's sake

They won’t license him because of his arm injury…. he had some serious and more than likely permanent nerve damage.

by Gunslinger20 on Apr 22, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Horodecki was doing just fine … no injury issues … when we were talking with him at UFC 97 (he was in Stout’s corner).

by No Shit MMA on Apr 22, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Last I heard..

He had permanent nerve damage and after he got taken off the Affliction 2 card, the CSAC said they wouldn’t give him a license due to the issues with his arm.

But since you know the guy personally, you’d know better than me…. I just go by what I read on the internet.

by Gunslinger20 on Apr 23, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey Gunslinger,

There is absolutely no truth at all in what you have read or heard (btw … were did you read this?) Chris is already medically cleared in Canada (which has just as stringent medical clearance requirements as California …)

Cheers!

by No Shit MMA on Apr 23, 2009 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Read it on MMA Junkie when they announced he was off the card for Affliction 2.

For the record, I wasn’t being a smartass, you talked to the guy personally and I just read it in an article on the internet so I was bowing to the fact you would know better than I would so don’t take my words as an insult.

Supremacy, this card is an abomination.

This is so unprofessional

You would never see Dana White talking about fighting a professional fighter…

Din Thomas vs Javier Vazquez
Brett Cooper vs Waachiim Spiritwolf
Danny Abbadi on the card
Eric Bradley (2X All Am Wrestler) on the card

And
A local match that will be “Off The Chain”
James Orso vs Colby McMahan

by Rderouen on Apr 24, 2009 3:39 AM EDT reply actions

Danny "I'm Actually a UFC Fighter" Abbadi is on the card...

That guy rubbed me the wrong way on TUF Season 3, I still don’t know how the hell he got on there in the first place.

Rest of the card looks good… I’d love to see the Rizzo vs Yvel fight and Din Thomas always puts on a good show.

Although numerous inaccurate titles, like “Unarmed Combat”, have been tossed around by various media outlets, FightHype.com has learned that the name of the June 27th Prize Fight MMA Promotions card, headlined by the intriguing clash between Bobby Lashley and Bob Sapp, will be titled “Ultimate Chaos!”
