Quinton "Rampage" Jackson to Get Title Shot This Summer

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

According to a new report from John Joe O'Regan at Fighters Only Magazine, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will look to regain the UFC Light Heavyweight title he once held, in late summer at either UFC 102 or UFC 103, against the winner of next month's title fight between Rashad Evans and challenger Lyoto Machida.

Rampage-jackson_medium

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson has been pencilled in for an August shot at the light-heavyweight title, Fighters Only has been told.

Former champion Jackson might headline either UFC 102 or UFC 103, the latter possibly being a UK event, according to an industry source.

Rampage was initially offered a title shot at UFC 98 against Evans after winning a unanimous decision over Keith Jardine at UFC 96, but a short turnaround time and nagging injuries forced Jackson to decline the offer, paving the way for Machida to step in.  Since dropping the the belt to Forrest Griffin last summer, Jackson has knocked out Wanderlei Silva and won the aforementioned bout against Jardine on his path towards reclaiming 205-lb gold.

UFC 102 is rumored for Portland, Oregon, and although is has not been officially announced yet, a headlining bout between Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is expected.  Beyond that heavyweight attraction, the only other rumored fights have not exactly been "main-event worthy", so a title fight with Jackson vs. Machida/Evans would make good sense as a co-headliner with Nogueira/Couture.

Despite the above report, it's unlikely that UFC 103 will take place in August, with 101, 102 and a potential Fight Night event already rumored for that month.  September would therefore seem to be the the only plausible time for UFC 103.  Rumors about 103 and Rampage's participation started floating around last week, with some sources suggesting that the event would take place in Jackson's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee.  This report from Fighters Only is the first mention of the card taking place in the UK, although Dana White and other UFC brass had previously mentioned the next UK event happening in late summer or early fall.

Whichever card the fight ends up on, it will also depend on the status of the Evans/Machida winner, as injuries could potentially disrupt these plans.  Such are the problems inherent when future fights are planned based on the winner of a fight that has not yet happened.

This story is off, they have their main events for August. 103 will be in September.

I changed the title

to reflect the possibility of the fight not happening in August, but unless you have a source about 102, I would argue that Nog-Couture might not be the true “main event” at 102, with Rampage possibly co-headlining if this report is to be believed (and Fighters Only is usually pretty accurate). Nothing beyond 101 has even been confirmed yet.

They’re not putting this on that card. It’s only 3 months after, and it leaves them without main event for September. Randy-Nog is the headliner for 102 in Portland, there will be a decent co-main but they wont do this too, they’d have to pay too much.

I agree with your assessment of the situation

But I still want to wait and hear some more substantiated information about headliners at 102 beyond Randy-Nog.

Not that this report is substantiated either, but I don’t think it’s as absurd an idea as you make it out to be.

Doubtful that Rampage will headline a UK card as well…with the whole PPV pay scale thingy….although he did so at UFC 75.

Well, he does seem pretty enamored of the UK at this point. He might like the chance to fight where he trains in front his sort-of-adopted fanbase.

Rampage will headline the shit out of a UK card – he trains there and his megasuperfight against Hendo was there.

I’m agreeing with you way too much lately.

I’m pretty sure I traded that away for a really nice Scotch a while ago. I’m a bit fuzzy on the particulars though.

Hey now

Good trade.

Guys, listen to Rome.

Meltzer’s report this week said 103 is late September, and there would be a UK show in October. This suggests to me they are hoping Bisping wins so they can do an Anderson fight there.

Hopefully if there is something “wrong” with Anderson, they can get it worked out prior to that.

Hendo doesn’t care about there hopes.

by The Legend on Apr 22, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, he doesn’t. I know Brent’s having a shitty day, but picking Bisping is fucking goofy.

by subo on Apr 22, 2009 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm no Bisping fan...

…but I give him a decent shot against Hendo. I could easily see him pulling a Misaki2 and out-pointing Dan. It’s not like Henderson is big on finesse.

by FRANKIE on Apr 22, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s also much slower and less dynamic at 185.

by Michael Rome on Apr 22, 2009 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s kind of weird how much cutting weight seems to disagree with Henderson. You’d think he’d be good at it with his background, but it really seems to drain him. And that’s not just a recent development with his age.

by FRANKIE on Apr 22, 2009 2:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slow, less dynamic, one-dimensional, never uses his strengths unless he has to, loads up his right hand, never lands it.

Henderson is moving into the group of fighters who are past their prime and should be thinking about retirement. He’s always been a fool, in my eyes, in terms of style in the ring/cage. His wrestling is a huge attribute he really likes to leave at the door in most of his fights.

People also...

like to forget that Bisping has been put on his ass by good wrestlers before but is VERY good at avoiding damage and getting back to his feet. Combine that with his ever improving striking (which you all know I’m in love with) and I think it’s a good recipe for beating Henderson. Were this fight taking place at 205 I’d go with Hendo…but at 185 I feel pretty confident in taking Bisping.

I’m slowly coming around to this position because of you guys. I really look forward to that fight.

Thats a good analysis

that will lead to probably a boring ass title shot. I’m not really looking forward to Bisping getting a shot at Anderson…feels like Silva/Cote II.

by Razreshat on Apr 22, 2009 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As much as I like Bisping...

I think it would look a bit like Silva/Cote but with Bisping having a better chance of winning (still a pretty low chance though)

Except Cote has crazy power and Bisping doesn’t.

by FRANKIE on Apr 22, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, there is that.

Lyoto will destroy Jackson. That’s my prediction. Which of course includes Lyoto’s destruction of Evans.

May I also include that you are crazy?

by bigweeze on Apr 22, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest...

I think he’s going to frustrate both of them and be the undisputed title holder.

I agree. I i dont think Evans or Jackson will beat Lyoto.

question marks all around

Forrest beat Rampage, Rashad beat Forrest, Machida beat everyone…. Rashad-Machida is as tough to call as Rashad-Rampage or Machida-Rampage. Stylistically speaking, Rashad-Rampage would make for a more exciting fight (though this is rheorical seeing that all of Machida’s fights have only intermittent bursts of excitement). Machida vs anyone will sell on the “mystique” factor. Luckily for Machida he gives fans just enough to be curious.

by Fooshnickens on Apr 22, 2009 12:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Rampage is smart enough to know he isn’t going to get the chance to bang on Machida the way he did on Chuck. I would imagine he would try to neutralize Machida’s elusiveness by trying to take it to the ground. That would be awesome, because I can’t wait to see Machida use his BJJ black belt on someone just to change it up.
