Criticism of Anderson Silva is Ridiculous

Anderson Silva is not to blame for last weekend's terrible main event. UFC matchmaking and marketing are to blame.

Star-divide

I'm tired of reading criticism of Anderson Silva's performance last weekend. I was there and I agree that the fight was not worth the price of admission but the basic truth is that it takes two to tango. Leites brought the fight for the first two rounds and then got tired or discouraged and started flopping to his back in the hopes that the Champ would insert himself into a triangle for the submission finish.

I don't blame Silva for refusing to engage on the ground. I don't even blame Leites for the flopping, I blame the UFC for the matchmaking. Leites is an up and coming middleweight. His biggest win to date (not counting Marquardt) was over Jose Landis-Jons, a stand up Brazilian fighter like Silva. He won the Landis-Jons fight by taking it to the ground and submitting him. Against a solid striker that's Leites' only real hope. Why did the UFC book the fight then knowing that Leites has very little stand up  and inadequate wrestling to take Silva down?

I beleive that they booked this fight because Marquardt lost to Leites due to fouls and they either had to admit that it was a BS loss and give Nate the title shot or accept the loss and give it to someone else. Unfortunately, Maia is still pretty green and Bisping/Henderson is locked in TUF pergatory.

If the UFC wants to sell events using Silva then they need to provide him an opponent who will stand and bang. Silva, like many successful strikers, is a counter-striker. He spent most of Saturday night looking for a punch or kick that he could counter. Leites knew that so he refused to provide the opening.  A lesser middleweight would have created a more exciting fight (Leben) because they'd be willing to exchange with the champ.

If the UFC is going to demand finishes then they need to be smarter in their matchmaking. They ended up with Leites when he outpointed Marquardt and tried to make lemonade out of those lemons. It failed. We ended up with an uncompetitive title fight. It bored the crowd as well as Anderson. If the UFC want to keep trumpeting him as the best pound for pound then they need to move him up a division or pay/co-promote to get a real challenge - Lawlor, Shields and Diaz all jump to mind.

I know that Silva has said that he won't fight at 205 because that belt is Machida's but what if Machida loses next month and is miles from another title shot? Why not encourage Silva to finish his career with an exciting run at the belt of the UFCs marquee division? Perhaps a mohawk would help his marketability.

Leites did not outpoint Marquardt

He just pissed Nate off to the point that he got piledriven.

yeah...

he took a beating and got the win because Marquardt couldn’t keep his head on straight.

I don't blame Leites, but I do blame the referee

Thales should have been docked a point, or at least warned about the constant flopping. He wasn’t even trying to pull guard; he was just falling to his back hoping that Silva would fall into his guard. this is no different than the Starnes v. Quarry fight, flopping is just another way to run. I am not complaining about fighters who prefer to be on their back, in fact one of biggest complaints about the UFC is that those scoring matches give too much credit for a fighter holding top position without causing any damage (it should be considered neutral at best and penalized for stalling at worst). But the key to fighting off your back is taking the fight there, not jsut laying down and hoping. The result here should have been the same as the Nick Serra v. Matt Makowski fight where Nick refused to stop butt scooting all over the ring. Standing up just to fall down again is no better than butt scooting.

I fully blame Silva, he was not actively looking to finish the fight.. either with submission or striking. He was there to piss around, or are you suggesting that punching guys in the leg / feet has some value in a MMA match?

He insulted his opponent by toying with him.
He insulted his employer by not coming to finish the match.
He insulted his fans/viewers by putting on a terrible performance.

Silva’s job is not to second guess who the UFC puts in front of him. His job is to train and to represent the belt like a champion should. Even suggesting that it’s the UFC’s fault for putting Leites in for a title shot is ridiculous.

The Leites fight shouldn't have happened...

because Okami deserved the title shot. He was in line to get it for UFC 90, injured his hand, and Cote took his place, but what exactly made Thales any more qualified than Okami to challenge the title at UFC 97? Okami isn’t injured. His last fight was over 4 months ago. He’s 7-1 in the UFC, with the only loss being a UD to the 500 lb. gorilla at MW, Rich Franklin. He has solid wins over Belcher, Swick, MacDonald, and Lister.

Leites, on the other hand, was riding a 5 fight win streak, but against who? Floyd Sword? Pete Sell? McFedries? Ryan Jensen? A B.S. split decision over Marquardt?

It was a terrible matchmaking job, and the UFC got what it deserved in the form of an extremely boring fight.

Now, Okami has to get through a very well rounded Dan Miller before he gets a crack at the title, and even that’s not for sure, because of rising contenders like Maia, as well as the winner of Hendo/ Bisping (who’ll probably get a shot at the title, as well). It’s bullshit.

Give Okami his title shot.
