Monday Morning Wrap Up: UFC 97 Coverage and Commentary

Thought I'd do a round up of some of the best coverage of UFC 97 from over the weekend from Bloody Elbow and around the net.

The event:

The fallout from Anderson Silva vs Thales Leites:

Chuck Liddell retirement watch:

good post..

with the huge amount of articles and news on the event, it really deserves a roundup. :)

I'm just cocky enough to add this one....

I didn’t make the round up, but I thought I made a few good points :)

I like this round up feature though….really good especially after an eventful weekend like we just had.

I forgot to take credit/blame for the “Liddell jumps to Silva’s defense” post. Still getting used to our new community. The post is updated.

You know the thing I cant stop think about about this event

is that Matt Wiman got robbed

but thats cus Im a huge Wiman fan, so naturally Im thinking more about that than the retirement of the Iceman or the nature of the champion.

Thats retarded

from the forest itself comes the handle for the axe

I believe he was robbed as well.

ditto

he was clearly dominating the fight in the third round and won at least 1 of the first 2.

I’d say Stout did enough to take the first two rounds, and Wiman easily won the third. It’s just tough when you think of it as a “fight” and the guy who was in control at the end loses.

that was one big advantage of the PRIDE rules

prevented guys coasting on their “leads”

I think more uses of 10-8 or 10-7 rounds could mirror the Pride system and have the rounds scored independently.

by szucconi on Apr 20, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I kind of agree, but that’s hard as there is no set in stone definition for what constitutes a 10-8 or 10-7 round. Which all ties back to the “10 point must system doesn’t work for MMA like it does for boxing” debate.

by McEwen on Apr 20, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that the 10 point must system is flawed, but I like the idea of the rounds being scored independent of each other. What you did last round doesn’t affect the score of this round. But setting up the scoring so that the result is the same as who won the fight and who won on the score card. i.e. Okami wins v. Franklin and comes back down two rounds and wins a dec with a dominate third round.

Good point, especially in a close fight like this.

Kid Nate as “The Linkmeister.” I’ll have to check out some of the stuff I hadn’t caught when I have time. Good idea.
