UFC 97 - Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites Live Results and Commentary

3451600558_0e13e5867d_medium

As with every major show we'll be here to bring you live results and commentary for UFC 97: Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites.  The card will also feature Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the PPV broadcast so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS!  In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.

So again, join me for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

As always, big props to Baudelaire on the image.

The broadcast has started so here we go!

Luiz Cane vs. Steve Cantwell - I'm so excited for this fight, I can't really explain it.  Round 1 - Jabbing early and a one-two from Cane.  High kick from Cantwell just misses.  Body shot from Cane in return.  Combination from Cane and he is the one stalking here.  They're both landing when they throw.  Two hard shots from Cane and Cantwell grabs a body lock.  Cantwell separates with an elbow.  High kick just misses again for Cantwell and Cane unloads with a combination.  Right hook from Cane hits glove.  Cantwell is dealing well with punishment so far and is starting to settle into looking for combinations of his own.  Solid punches from Cane and he is winning the round easily so far.  Uppercut lands for Cantwell.  Big overhand right from Cantwell misses.  Cantwell is trying to circle away from Cane's power but is still getting caught.  Cane wins the round 10-9.  Round 2 - Cantwell is pumping the left and looks like he wants to attack and lands a body shot.  Big left hand from Cane lands though.  Cane's mouth is opening a bit now but he doesn't look like he's slowing down.  Combo from Cane has Steve backing up.  Cantwell is not looking as good as I expected but he's hanging in there.  Cantwell lands a left to stop Cane's combo and then unloads with a kick combo of his onw.  Cantwell lands a right hand that wakes Cane up.  High kick lands for Cantwell and again, and a knee.  He's starting to heat up.  Duck under hook, uppercut combo from Cantwell.  Right hook from Cantwell.  Cantwell actually stole the round through the last two minutes on my card but I could still  see it for Cane.  10-9 Cantwell to even the card.  Round 3 - Left hand from Cane.  Low kick from Cantwell.  Nice combo from Cane and now he unloads but most of the punches were blocked.  Cantwell with a body kick.  Very good stand-up fight here.  Combo finishes with the headkick by Cantwell. Now Cantwell is the stalker and Cane is much less busy. Knee, and two left hands from Cane.  Half a round to go and Cane is probably winning the round.  Cantwell lands some shots and Cane looked to shoot for a second.  Two jabs and an uppercut from Cane now.  Head kick is blocked by Cane, twice now.  Cane with some big shots now as we approach a minute left.  Cane looks tired but he doesn't stop working.  Thirty seconds to go until Cane wins a decision.  10-9 Cane to make it 29-28 Cane on the BloodyElbow scorecard.  Official Scorecards: 29-28, 30-27, 30-27.  Luiz Cane wins by unanimous decision.

Antoni Hardonk vs. Cheick Kongo - Round 1 - High kick from Hardonk misses but a leg kick lands.  Right hand from Kongo lands solid.  Low kick again from Hardonk so Kongo throws one of his own.  Kongo is working for a takedown but they are separated.  Kongo catches a kick and puts Hardonk down but seems to have no interest in going to the ground, instead throwing kicks to the leg.  Combo from Kongo and he grabs a body lock.  Takedown attempt from Kongo is stuffed but he finally finishes it.  Hardonk is bent up against the fence and Kongo lands a few elbows.  The round ends with Kongo landing elbows.  10-9 Kongo.  Round 2 - Hardonk misses a kick and ends up on the ground with Kongo on top of him.  Kongo lands some punishment.  Hammerfists from the top.  Big right hand from Kongo.  Big shots and Hardonk turtles up and is eating big shots.  The fight is stopped and Hardonk is pretty hurt.  Cheick Kongo wins by TKO (punches), round 2.

Brian Stann vs. Krzysztof Soszynski - Round 1 - They clinch up and trade shots.  Body kick from Stann. More clinch work and a right hand from Stann as they separate.  Nice takedown from Soszynski against the cage.  Full mount now from Soszynski.  Stann bucks and almost tries for a leg but Soszynski is in side control.  Stann gets back up and Soszynski with another takedown.  Kimura attempt from Soszynski but he lets it go to improve position.  He grabs it again and this time Stann has no choice but to tap.  Krzysztof Soszynski wins by submission (kimura), round 1.

Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua - Round 1 - Leg kick from Rua.  High kick misses for Rua.  Right hands land from both guys.  Right hand from Rua lands as a counter.  Liddell lands a counter but a solid leg kick from Rua.  Right hand from Rua and Chuck looks s-l-o-w to me.  Takedown by Rua, Chuck stands and Shogun goes for a leglock but Chuck gets out. Chuck throws off a takedown attempt, lands a few punches but doesn't do much damage.  Takedown by Chuck now but he lets Rua stand back up right away.  Big punch drops Liddell!  hammerfists and Yamasaki stops the fight!  It's over!  Chuck stands up and says "what happens? is it over?" and looks out of it.  Mauricio Rua wins by TKO (punches), round 1.

Sam Stout vs. Matt Wiman - Round 1 - They're throwing hands andthat isn't Wiman's best route to victory.  Right hand from Wiman lands solid.  Takedown from Wiman now which makes sense.  Wiman walks him to the cage.  Stout tries to stand and is able to and push Wiman against the fence.  Stout with a couple punches.  Right hand from Stout.  Superman punch lands by Wiman.  Right hand by Wiman again.  Takedown attempt is avoided and Wiman tries for a guillotine and now ends up on bottom.  They stand up and Wiman lands again with the right.  Right by Stout now.  10-9 round for Wiman on my card.  Round 2 - Left hook from Wiman.  Wiman gets stung but manages to scramble and take Stout's back .  Stout shakes him and ends up on top.  Hard to call this fight honestly.  Wiman is still pushing forward as they're standing.  High kick misses for Stout.  Uppercut drops Wiman and he tries to ride it out.  Wiman throws his arms up and almost locks in an armbar.  Left kick to the body hurts Wiman.  Wiman keeps looking at the clock.  Wiman pushes for a takedown but can't finish.  Right hand by Stout.  10-9 Stout to even it up.  Round 3 - Shot from Wiman and Stout is fighting it off well.  Wiman scrambles and gets Stout's back.  Body triangle by Wiman now and he is landing punches and working for the choke.  Stout turns finally and is on top in Wiman's guard.  Lands some big elbows now but they go back to standing.  Takedown from Wiman and that is big on the cards.  If Wiman can do some work he can win this round.  Wiman is working from the top and opens a cut over Stout's eye.  Stout is trying to stand but Wiman is holding on and as they stand Wiman lands some shots.  10-9 Wiman to take the fight on my card 29-28.  Official Scorecards:  29-28 across the board for Sam Stout.  Sam Stout wins by unanimous decision.

Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites for the UFC Middleweight Championship - Round 1 - No action for the first minute as Leites tries to stay outside.  Over a minute with no action.  This is a really bad first two minutes.  No action at all.  Leites avoids a Silva uppercut.  The crowd finally starts to boo as we're through a round with no meaningful action.  Low kick from Thales and he tries to follow with a takedown but Anderson avoids.  High kick from Leites is blocked.  Body punch by Silva.  More boos as the action slows again.  Silva with two punches as he comes forward.  Trip by Silva but he's not going to the ground with Leites.  Thales pulls guuad But Anderson doesn't play around.  They go around the ring and Anderson tries for a foot stomp which is, of course, illegal.  10-9 round for Silva...I guess.  Round 2 - More of the same to start out and Anderson is making himself less marketable by the second doing this after the Cote fight.  Takedown by Leites and this could be trouble.  Leites is in Anderson's half guard.  Leites tries to pass but Anderson has the leg on lockdown.  Now Anderson gets full guard with a body triangle.  Thales throws a few punches but doesn't really land.  Upkick from Anderson as Leites stands over him.  Anderson works for a triangle but no luck.  Silva is able to stand up finally and makes Leites follow him to the feet.  I'm sorry but Anderson has to try to initiate on the feet...Leites isn't going to come to him.  A punch from Silva...so that's something.  Rogan and Goldie try to make it sound like fans want "fast food fighting" but honestly a bad fight is a bad fight, and when they stand this fight, it's been boring and bad.  10-9 round for Leites based on the takedown to even the fight 19-19 on my card.  Round 3 - A little standup work and Leites tries to get it to the ground unsuccessfully.  Leites is poked in the eye.  Goldberg has called Leites "Maia" a few times this fight.  Anderson is looking like he wants to attack because Leites looks hurt (from the eye poke).  Guard pull attempt from Leites and it doesn't work, so the crowd boos.  Leg kick by Anderson.  GSP chants as the fans are annoyed with the fight.  Leites flops to his back and Anderson avoids going to the ground and looks annoyed.  Body kick by Anderson.  Right hand answer by Leites.  Leites flops to his back again...they should consider taking a point if this keeps up.  Jump kick by Anderson. Uppercut lands for anderson and Thales looks like he is folding.  Anderson is just starting to pick him apart with combinations.  leites again tries for a guard pull/trip but it doesn't work.  Anderson could have done this at any point.  Leites is just crumbling because he can't get the takedown.  Awful...awful fight.  10-9 Silva and he's up 29-28 on my card.  Round 4 - Leg kicks by Anderson to open things up.  Anderson is trying to be flashy now and lands a few punches.  Right hand lands to the eye for Silva.  A whole lot of not really engaging again.  There is no reason for Anderson to have not ended this by now. Takedown attempt from leites is stuffed.  Anderson looks like he wants to win on leg kicks but his trying to be cute is just annoying and kind of lame.  The round ends and it's Silva's 10-9 to make it 39-37.  Mercifully only one round left.  Round 5 - Leites is trying to make something happen now.  Leg lick attempt by Thales doesn't work.  Takedown attempt again and it doesn't work and now Anderson stays on top landing some punches but has to stand back up.  Spinning side kick by Anderson.  Leites flops again and this time Anderson decides to throw some some punches.  Goldberg and Rogan claim that Silva deserves no criticism and this is some awful announcing as there is NO reason Leites was able to hang around 5 rounds.  none at all.  The crowd boos bullshit.  Montreal is a GREAT fight city and they hate this fight as much as I do.  The round and fight ends and Silva gets booed for holding his hands up and jumping the cage.  10-9 for Silva and it's 49-46 on my card.  Official Scorecards: 49-46, 48-47, 50-46 all for Anderson Silva.  Anderson Silva wins by unanimous decision and retains his title.  The crowd boos.

Buzzzzzed.

Can’t wait! I haven’t been this jazzed for a UFC PPV in a minute. Here’s hoping we get a bunch of prelims.

I think we’ll be in luck. I see finishes in all five main card fights.

If Cain vs Cantwell doesn't end early

I’m banking on that to be fight of the night

That's where I'm at...

as long as it isn’t a really quick KO I’m pretty sure it’ll win it. I’m kind of hoping for an MMA version of Hagler/Hearns.

Since I can't mention it without linking it...

Hagler/Hearns round 1. Two tough bastards who throw with power beating the hell out of each other. That’s what I want from Cantwell/Cane…which I admit may be asking for a lot.

I DVR’d the weigh ins and found it funny how Silva came in at 182. He’s probably trying to prove to Dana that he can make 180 for a catchweight fight against GSP.

not silva vs leites cause i think thats gonna be KO of the night..

Silva versus Leites won’t be Knockout of the Night. That goes to Hardonk after he demolishes Kongo. Leites will win Submission of the Night after submitting Silva with an arm-triangle.

pretty bold prediction there. :)

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 18, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's remember that there's a lot at stake tonight.

I’m not talking about the measly UFC middleweight championship or “redemption” for Chuck or Shogun. That’s all a great sideshow. Predictions are what I’m talking about:

Correct %

Cannon: 68.8
Nate: 63.9
Mike F: 62.7
Brent: 59.0
Mike R: 58.3
Luke: 57.1
Nick: 54.2
Nelson: 47.3

Can I remain at the top? Will a challenger emerge from behind? Can Nelson earn his first name back by pushing over .500? All unimportant but fun questions.

by Cannon Jacques on Apr 18, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah yeah

Except those predictions include for approximately 3 events and I cleaned up on the last one.

Admittedly, though, there are a lot of my picks on this card I just do not feel good about. I don’t expect to do particularly well tonight. Not terrible either, but not great.

by Luke Thomas on Apr 18, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just clowning.

I know a lot of my recent success is luck although I’d like to think there’s a little skill at work. I find it a little interesting to see how everyone’s doing; thanks to Beer Monster for the raw totals and then Brent for running the percentages. This week has some fairly difficult calls. The matchmaking for the Strikeforce event produced some relatively easy predictions for the most part.

by Cannon Jacques on Apr 18, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Glad to be of service. Those totals don’t include Strikeforce, by the way. UFC only.

My Picks

Leites
Shogun
Cain
Kongo
Stann
Macdonald
Kang
Herman
Chonan
Bocek
Wiman
Marshall

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

by P Brady on Apr 18, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Predictions I made I don't feel good about

Silva over Leites. I’m getting a weird feeling about Leites attitude heading into the fight to say nothing of his BJJ and tolerance for punishment.

Cane over Cantwell. Irvin tagged the shit out of Cane and rocked him before whatever happened to his knee happened. A guy as accurate and angular in his stand-up as Cantwell is gives me serious hesitations about picking Cane.

And I suppose Shogun has a chance, but I don’t exactly feel uneasy about my pick of Liddell.

by Luke Thomas on Apr 18, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

If Chonan can hang in there for a few rounds and get the sub, Leites can, right?

I’m probably Cane’s biggest fan, The guy is pretty much the more technical Thiago Silva IMO

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

by P Brady on Apr 18, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Silva coming in light gave me pause, but Leites can’t hang. He might reset quickly, but the guy got dropped by RYAN JENSEN. This is going to be classic Anderson. As for Cane, he always starts slow because it takes him forever to get his timing down. Once he does though, he should own Cantwell and get a late TKO.

Get outta here. Salmons is the guy doing the big time job, which is keeping Paul Pierce frustrated. I haven’t seen such a dominant defensive performance like that by one man in the playoffs for a very long time. He’s literally all over Pierce and is just dominating him all over the place.

After having Salmons on Pierce the entire time, giving Pierce problems all game long, VDN thinks it prudent to put Hinrich on him and take Salmons out. Now that’s horrible coaching, folks.

The poll should say…who “SHOULD” win the FOTN award……a few times in the past what we here see and who the award goes to does not quite match……

by soadtrails on Apr 18, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

But the poll is asking which fight people think WILL win, not which fight should.

I voted Banha-Cantwell because I think they’ll try to knock each others blocks off, and that’s what gets FotN.

RUMOR

There is a rumor on the UG that Chuck has pulled out of his fight:

I was just at Montreals Centre Bell and overheard Chuck talking about having pulled out from the fight due to breaking his big toe and the 2 toes beside it on his right foot. Apparently he broke them when he caught his toes in a sort of crack/lip entering the ring to check it out today. There was some space between the top stair entering the ring and the lip of the apron. I assist with setting up the sound at the arena and was in the back when it happened.

I'd love to see Thales booted out...

It was awful, I’m not going to fault Silva for the first round or two. I mean, he feels out the other guy. That’s fine. However, in the later rounds when no matter what happened when Silva came in Thales literally just dropped to his ass and acted like he was getting ready to do a crunch.

You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m highly annoyed that I burnt money on the PPV, and if it wasn’t for how much I enjoyed the Wiman/Stout fight even if the decision was dead wrong, I’d feel flat out cheated. However, I really can’t lay much of the blame on him for that fight. What was he supposed to do? Just throw flying knees over and over, because after one closing move the guy was on his ass?

I saw better attempts to pull guard watching that freakshow on Showtime with Cyborg.

Thales is apparently a very skilled BJJ practioner.

So really the only shot he had was some sort of submission, since he didn’t appear to be striking for anything either.

I don’t mind him trying to go for takedowns, and trying to pull guard.

I mind him blatently just falling on his ass any time Silva got close, and when Silva finally went down with him to punch him in the face he didn’t even go for anything.

Absolutely horrible.

just say NO to one dimensional fighters!

The sport is “mixed martial arts” and the event is a “fight”. This is not a “competition of skills”, it’s a freakin’ fight!! If you want to showcase your BJJ then go to the BJJ worlds or Abu Dhabi or whatever. Win your medals, gain the respect of your peers, open a school, etc etc – in BJJ. Same goes for wrestlers who want to make a few bucks wrestling. I mean, do we really have to watch Jake O’ Brien again?? I have all the respect for fighters that can make their opponent fight their own fight but when it doesn’t work out that way, some of them (Leites, O’Brien, Lutter to name a few) become exposed as one-dimensional bore-fests; (I almost used the word “fraud” but will restrain myself from hyperbole..). Please UFC, please give fights to fighters – guys that will fight any fight and not just their own.

Anderson deserves every bit of criticism that gets heaped on him tonight. He completely broke down Leites’ range, rhythm, cardio and confidence no later than the third round and decided to spend the next two rounds throwing nifty leg kicks and doing silly dances.

He had Thales perfectly cut off, against the cage, with a pathetically bad boxing guard and no room to shoot and instead of opening up Anderson decides to play patty cake.

I'm with you here...

There were plenty of times where Silva could have ended the fight if he’d just engage. I get that he was playing it safe…but I expect a bit more than a safe decision from the supposed #1 guy in the world against a guy who got beat up by Kampmann and Marquardt. I’m not expecting Silva to completely abandon his game and play into Leites’ strategy. But he had him pinned a few times and rather than try to let his hands go and end it he either leg kicked and circled away or just kind of pawed at him.

Chuck Liddell had no shot. His best shot was a Hail Hary, which he threw multiple times to no avail.

by AnonymousA on Apr 19, 2009 3:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Wrong

Chuck knew he needed a win, and a motivated Chuck is dangerous (e.g. vs Wandy). Shogun has looked mediocre against Forrest and awful against Coleman. If that same hollow Shogun fought tonight’s Chuck, who would have won? Shogun wouldn’t’ve had any defense because he wouldn’t have been able to keep his arms up, and the Hail Mary overhand rights would have TKO’d him. Instead, Shogun trained well, avoided getting tagged, and smashed Chuck’s jaw. Woot!

So…instead of the fight that did happen, did happen, and Chuck trained for the fight that didn’t happen, and ended up losing the fight that did happen…

Sounds like a pretty reasonable strategy.

by AnonymousA on Apr 19, 2009 3:20 AM EDT up reply actions

When predicting a fight’s outcome, the fight obviously hasn’t happened yet, so the predictors can only rely on past data to inductively determine who the likeliest victor is. This process is not 100% accurate, but it is the only methodology of predicting the fight, and any future event, really (cf An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding). Based on past data, the most reasonable outcome was Liddell by late TKO/Dec. It is no different than predicting Jardine would have beaten Houston Alexander based on the available information, despite that prediction being ultimately wrong.

What infallible crystal ball did you appear to use that “involved being correct and everyone else being wrong”?

Basic understanding of chaos theory helped. Then through simple simulations I set up I was able to input different variables that I thought could come into play. It was pretty mundane, actually.

The prism with which people looked through this fight with was very biased in one way of thinking, and to me that tainted many peoples thought processes.

If they only wanted to see an out of shape Shogun, that’s all they saw. They were forgiving Chuck his years of neglecting his body (though his potbelly has receded some recently) and his opponents recently figuring out his style, and knowing how to counter it. Chuck’s only win the past few years came from Silva, who was more than happy to ignore all of the things that people had learned about Chuck, and go out to fight an exciting fight.

It seemed like Liddell/Rua should’ve been a lot easier to see, but the rampant pro-Liddell leanings confused me greatly. That’s why I so harshly had to represent the opposing point of view. It was an attempt to bring balance to the misunderstandings of mixed martial arts, and how our own biases can taint analysis.

by AnonymousA on Apr 19, 2009 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Gotcha – agreed that Chuck’s been figured out, I just didn’t think Rua would have improved so dramatically in three months. Even if Chuck is not the fighter of yore, a few of his overhand rights to an unprotected head would have ended it. Instead, Shogun got smart, boxed a bit, and won $70K!

Funny story...

I went to a party tonight (and missed the fights live) but got updates throughout the night. Two friends were there who have always been huge into MMA, but over the last few months have been M.I.A. when it comes to following the sport.

I asked them who they thought won the fight (after I got the results)…they both said, without hesitating “Oh, I bet Shogun killed him.” I was liked “Uhhh, yeah, actually. Wouldn’t you assume Chuck won? He was a favorite.” They both agreed that Chuck is old and slow, while Shogun is young and can easily improve even though he looked terrible against Coleman.

I have no idea what that means, but maybe it shows that unbiased people who are out of the loop saw this fight for what it was: old over the hill guy vs. young guy.

by Farthammer on Apr 19, 2009 3:17 AM EDT reply actions

Just speaking personally, I can’t really remember Shogun showing much knockout/knockdown power standing up. So for him, in my mind, having to have a gameplan of takedown/ground ‘n’ pound against a guy who is legendary for staying on his feet was a huge deal in my analysis.

And I can’t remember Shogun showing much susceptibility to being knocked out/knocked down. So for Liddell to have a gameplan of swing for the fences/Hail Mary against a guy who is legendary for not being knocked out was a huge deal in my analysis.

Sad to say, but while this probably wasn’t the last time Chuck Liddell fought, he ceased to be relevant the moment Shogun dropped him. He’s 1-4 since Jan 1st 2007, his last KO is from Dec 2006… While UFC will probably still try to push him as what he was in 2003-2006, the days of the knockout artist Iceman have passed. Probably for good.

I hope he calls it a day before falling to the undercard. It would be a sorry thing indeed to see Chuck become what Mark Coleman has become – a former UFC champ getting licensed for one fight only and having that happen in the undercard…

The first rockstar-popular UFC fighter is done. Chuck will one day get into the UFC HOF for all that he has done, but he really needs to hang up the gloves before becoming a shell of his former self.

I think the UFC picks opponents for Anderson Silva by drawing names out of a hat. That snooze-fest was rediculous. Half the bar had gone home before the fight was even over.
