Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

"Superstar boxer Roy Jones Jr. has expressed interest in facing UFC Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva, after Silva had let his intentions be known that he wished to face Jones in a boxing contest. Promoter Bob Arum was eager to promote such a bout to let the world see that "those MMA guys can't throw a straight punch".

Unfortunately it seems the impedus [sic] to set up such a fight is dead in the water, since the UFC is no hurry to see their Champion compete in a venue not being promoted by them.

Enter Nick Diaz. With Strikeforce's more flexible attitudes towards fighting and the Strikeforce-Showtime alliance, the barriers to such a fight could very well be coming down. Our camp has already contacted Top Rank Boxing to let them know we would be 100% in favor of such a matchup. Now the ball is in their court."

This cannot be serious, can it?

Even an old Roy Jones Jr would demolish Diaz or Silva for that matter in straight boxing. This just bores the shit out of me because there is nothing involved except money & would likely end with Diaz/Silva in the hospital.

The fight game?

We are talking about a 25 year old MMA fighter wanting to fight a 42 or whatever year old retired boxed. That is not the fight game.

Two guys who are trained-for and willing to fight for prize money.

Sounds like it to me, but I understand if you think its perverted or wrong somehow. Have a good one.

Don’t be rediculous. Silva would destroy Roy Jones- KO, Rd. 1.

I didn’t realized people still watched boxing.

They do!

But I’m guessing you don’t. You know boxing is punching only, yes?

by Chris Nelson on Apr 16, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t remember the last time I watched boxing. Oh…it was when Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear off. Boxing is like baseball- the 20 seconds I want to see will be on sportscenter. The only way to sit through a whole baseball game is if you go in person. After watching a 3 or even 5 round MMA match, i cannot bring myself to sit through a 12 to 15 round boxing match. That’s just me.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Apr 16, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t say I blame you – I was never heavy into boxing until probably three years ago, and even now I’m pretty selective with what I watch. But dnevil is right, RJJ would demolish Silva in a boxing match the same way Silva would absolutely kill him in an MMA fight.

by Chris Nelson on Apr 16, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

It only takes this...

RJJ is faded compared to his prime…but he still beats lower-upper/upper-mid tier pro boxers. And I’m sorry…but no MMA fighter has the skills of these guys that he can still beat in pure boxing. So it just wouldn’t be a compelling fight to me.

Just like RJJ debuting in MMA against a guy like Diaz or Silva wouldn’t be interesting to me.

Those dudes over at Cesar Gracie are some crazy mofo’s. Just shows that (whether anyone thinks Diaz would have a chance or not) the dude is a FIGHTER.

Of course,

I was responding to your comment about it being because Diaz is a “fighter” This is just like Tim Sylvia fighting Mercer=retarded.

HAHAHA!

Awesome! Nick is fucking crazy.

I know, this just makes me like the guy more (especially since it will never, ever happen and Nick won’t get thrashed by RJJ).

Maybe that’s why Stallone was meeting with the Nogueira brothers, he’s wanting to film Over the Top 2!

i know i’ve made a couple of dumb jokes about this.. but to be honest, it this happened i’d watch it. :)

if somehow it got sanctioned, or if they go the sylvia route and have it in alabama, i’d watch it and i’d root for diaz. even if i think rjj is gonna beat the crap out of him.

by Anton Tabuena on Apr 16, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No shit you’d watch it, we would ALL watch it, and probably live blog it too :D FTW!

I watch a lot of things that looking back on I’m not proud of watching. Freak show fights are fun but that doesn’t mean they should be immune to ridicule(just like Stallone movies).

Ohhh

It’s a combination of wanting a pay day and wanting to fight. Anyone who knows Nick understands that he’s willing to fight just about anyone, anywhere.

Bit unstable, but actually a pretty likable guy.

I think they should set this up, but allow the mma fighter to throw a set number of knees, elbows, and kicks per fight. Say Diaz gets 5 knees, 5 elbows, and 5 kicks to use anytime during the fight. Jones doesn’t know when they’re coming, but he has to be aware of the possibility at all times. That would make this awesome.

:)

by Kierkegaard on Apr 16, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

There is no way Roy Jones will take this match on. There wouldn’t be enough meat in it for him. Roy would be taking majority of the payperview revenue and unfortunately Nick, while he is an entertaining fighter would not have the fanbase required to satisfy Roy’s revenue needs. He only wants to fight the best and fight a fighter who will bring their own fans to complement his own and bring in a massive payday.

Boxing vs MMA 3: Settle the Score!

You know what I really get a kick out of, whenever these boxing vs. mma fights pop up?

How boxers really believe that they are sticking it to an mma fighter when they show them that, when dragged out of their natural environment, given a new set of rules and restrictions that keep them from using their full skill set, utterly reinvent how they act in the clinch and slap angry red pillows on their fists. That really shows the world how much mma sucks, doesn’t it?

For a follow up, we’ll have a Great White Shark, one of the oceans deadliest beasts, fight some army ants in the middle of the Great Plains.
