Hitomi Akano's Manager Angrily Details "Cyborg" Cheating

Megumi Fujii, a cornerwoman of Hitomi Akano, and Shu Hirata, Akano's manager, posted blog articles in Japanese regarding what happened at the Strikeforce weigh-ins. Here is the summary, mostly from the manager's blog:

Apr 10

2pm - First weight-in

Cyborg weighted at 152 for a 145 pound match (Akano passed at 143.5).

The Athletic Commission instructed Cyborg to cut 2.5 pound by 8 pm.

6pm - second weight-in

The schedule has been pulled at the request of Cyborg, and she wieghted at 150.5 with her swimsuit on.

Shootboxe people said her swimsuit was wet with sweat and demanded re-check naked in privacy.

Behind the closed doors, she weighted at 144 pounds.

Akano demanded to check again naked in her presence and Cyborg weighted at 150.1 pounds.

At this point the Athletic Commisson declared that it's the official weight for the match. Since Akano was 143.5 pound, the official weight diference was 6.6 pounds.

California rule does not allow the fight to happen when there is more than 6 pounds weight difference. But for unknown reason the Commission allowed the fight, and left the decision to Akano.

7pm

Shu Hirata, Akano's manager, declared the cancellation of the fight. Akano left the hotel. Strikeforce people called the manager to renegotiate.

Apr 11

1am

Cyborg weighted at 158 after her Pizza dinner.

2am

After lengthy negotiations between Strikeforce and Akano party, the fight was back on.

Hirata got angry at Cyborg's unwillingness to cut weight between the first and second weigh-ins, potential manipulation with the scales, and the attitude which the Chute Boxe people maintained and all the excuses they made along the way.

Megumi wrote it was sad Cyborg did not try hard to cut her weight to comply, and she did not come to Akano when the fight was over. A fight without rules and respect is not something called MMA, she says.

I think Cyborg did not show respect to Akano after the fight because she knows what she is doing. In post match Interview Cyborg aplogized for the fans, but not for Akano.

I watch Japanese female MMA fights regulary, and when I first heard Akano vs. Cyborg happens, unaware of weight difference, I thought Akano could really win the fight. She is a very solid grappler in her weight class, and is very experienced. I even wondered if it's okay for Strikeforce to make this fight happen.

Maybe Cyborg thought the same, and had to rely on her weight.

6 lb. Difference Limit

I’m confused about this. Is this only in situations where one opponent is over the designated weightclass limit? If not, it makes no sense, since the weightclass itself is ten pounds from low end to high end.

I’ve never heard of the 6 lb weight difference limit and I’m not sure why people are complaining at CSAC for allowing Akano to decide if she wanted to take the fight or not? The situation really stinks from top to bottom but Akano could of walked away and still got her pay if she had wanted to. Yes CSAC could of cancelled it but it’s not like they forced it to happen they allowed the fighter to decide.

Somebody needs to be suspended, right now.

Not sure how you could have a “private” weigh in without a CSAC representative involved?

Private meant not in front of an audience.
The athletic commission must always be there.

My concern is how in the world could there be a discrepancy of 6.1 lbs. between the two nigh on simultaneous weigh-in’s? Either way (re: the official’s presence) there is a lot to answer for.

It’s CSAC that controls the scales, there has to be CSAC officials there for it to be an official weigh in.

As I said, severe consequences are in order.

If someone from CSAC was involved with faking a weigh in then I would assume that would fall under fixing a fight and would involve criminal charges, that is a very serious charge to levy.

I doubt that took place, but to even screw up using the scales by that much is a big damn deal. This is what I have been saying (sorry if it was lost in translation before):

If “weighed in privately” means alone/with her team but sans official:
- The official that authorized that is an asshat and should face repercussions
- Cyborg et al. need to face punishment for trying to lie about her weight

If it means her with an official (perhaps along with members of her team):
- The official needs to face stiff penalties for fucking up the weight taking by that much
- And investigation needs to occur to make sure that he was only screwing up the weight, and wasn’t being corrupt.

This is in addition to all the other tomfoolery that went on. It’s sickening.

This story has legs - especially if Akano was given a bullshit weight for Cyborg

That’s intentionally misleading a fighter – and the commission had, had, had to be in on it if this is true. I really wish Akano would’ve just walked – but I imagine that the money was too much to turn down. It’s fucking bullshit and it makes the whole sport look bad.

Rec’d.

I’m really curious how much money it took.

Dave Meltzer is saying up to $20,000 extra, plus the consideration for other fighters from her camp.

How on Earth does that happen? For starters, blaming a swimsuit for six effing pounds is not just ridiculous, it’s bonehead stupid. The fact that the six pounds somehow magically reappeared when Akano was present is no longer just stupid but really suspicious.

Whatever happened, this helps neither CSAC’s or Chute Boxe’s reputation.

I don't imagine it will result in anything...

but I’ll be following up with the CSAC on this in the morning.

There should be a serious investigation. If it is determined that the closed doors weigh in was not done in the presence of a CSAC official the person in charge of making sure the weigh ins are done in the presence of a CSAC official should be fired. If the closed doors weigh in was done in the presence of a CSAC offical and this official either lied about the weight of 144 and/or made a mistake with the scale which led to an inaccurate weight being registered then this official must be fired. If the official was present it doesn’t matter if it was a mistake or a lie, this type of error can not be tolerated at any level of competition. If it is determined that chute box lied about the weight they should be heavily fined and suspended.

Does anyone think we would be having these same issues if the fights were held in Vegas? I don’t.
