BJJ Champ Cameron Lee Earle Faces New Rape Charge
In an ugly story from California, via the San Jose Mercury News:
When an appellate court threw out the attempted rape conviction against Cameron Lee Earle, a world-class jujitsu black belt from San Jose, his friends in the martial arts community celebrated his shot at redemption. But the 32-year-old champion fighter's victory was short-lived: A just-discovered DNA match allegedly ties him to another violent sexual assault in San Jose. Earle's up-and-down path through the legal system peaked last month when a Sixth District Appellate Court judge called his trial "grossly unfair." But now it has come to light that a mandatory DNA sample he provided in prison turned up a hit in the state's database for unsolved sex crimes. He has yet to be tried for that crime. Earle had gone from a champion fighter to disgraced sex felon; and now he moves from possible freedom to a possible life sentence as a violent serial sex criminal. On Christmas Eve 2003, a San Jose woman was putting presents under her tree as her husband and two children slept upstairs. A masked man barged in and held a knife to her throat as she pleaded for her life. He sexually assaulted her and, putting her in a bathroom, fled with money and a coffee pot. DNA left in the woman's hair, law enforcement authorities say, is that of Earle.

yeah, that’s a strange fact to throw in the end of the article, and even stranger when you think about it.
yeah that was a very weird choice

Maybe he filled the coffee pot with the money and some miscallaneous items? Sounds like something a thief would do out of convenience.
I poop rainbows.

I understand that, I was going to make a comment about the coffee pot, but traded that for my first comment. My humor senses went off when I read the coffee pot thing…I mean…really? The coffee pot? I wouldn’t have put that in the article, just for the fact that people like me would lose track of the whole point just because of it.

You people are disgusting. Making light of one of the most sickening and barbaric crimes on earth. And any one of you animals that are making light of this are sick. Im embarrased to be a part of this website and community with people that act like that.
Yeah, I just hid a bunch of comments in this thread which were in very poor taste considering the seriousness of what we’re talking about. Honestly, I’ve come to expect better from the community here. Let’s try to act like grownups.
Anyway, my first thought on seeing this was damn, California is kicking ass with these mandatory DNA samples. That’s how they caught Joe Son last year too.

Let’s go ahead and add rape jokes to the list of bannable offenses. I’d love to hear the rationale for allowing those – and this is coming from a big mmalogic fan.

Just in case...
I meant no harm with my “Bro!”…I’m glad I missed out on rape jokes, because in all seriousness, that would just piss me off. All I can really say is, good job CA on getting guys like this off the street, and I hope that down the road people don’t try to connect MMA and criminals.
Having lost my best friend to a rapist/murderer...
…and with great sadness if he is in fact guilty i hope he gets the stiffest of punishments. The coffee pot did stick out to me and i almost broke a smile but its still a sad day for MMA.
Sucks to hear that, but I’m glad I’m not alone about the coffee pot thing.

Cameron lee is an animal, to do that to a family on christmas eve. he should be locked up and they need to throw away the key. And i bet the judge that dismissed the first case feels like a tool now.
Just a Question
Nate – why did you feel it was appropriate to post this on the frontpage? Is it meant to spark a particular discussion?
All-in-all (and not to downplay the seriousness of this guys crime) the guy isn’t really an MMA fighter. He’s a BJJ practitioner and a black belt but otherwise he’s just another criminal.
Not against the posting of this – i’m just wondering what the thinking behind it was.
Good question, and I agree…I have not once heard of the guy (and if I did, I don’t remember him) and then he gets front paged for his crime…
Still this dude is a sick guy…I hope he gets his mind right and serves his sentence to the full extent.

I thought it was interesting
I’d read about the original case a few months back but never got around to posting it.
I think this story is connected to some of the other mma fighter tragedies we’ve seen in recent months — the Jeremy Williams case, the killing of Justin Levens, etc.
I’m not sure what I want to say about it, but I thought it would be of interest to the community.
It was sent to me by a BE reader and frequent poster.

3rd place brown belt at the Worlds in 2001 in case anyone was curious about the phrase"world-class jujitsu black belt."
And while I’m obviously bringing this up to point out that the description may be slightly exaggerated, I hope that people understand that placing third as a brown belt is still very impressive.
Rape Charge
I’m a firm believer that sex offendres should be warming up the death row chairs. This coming from a man that did 16 yrs for a gang related homcide. They are the lowest of the lowest. Had (they) raped one of mine they’d never see the inside of a cop car!

So Sorry
For trying to lighten a horrific story with a joke or two. If you’re going to post a story that contains rape, stealing a coffee pot, and dna in hair, then you’ve gotta expect comments like that. The story was written in a manner that is intentionally titillating. There was no reason to state where the dna was found nor any reason to mention the coffee pot. That’s like reporting that someone was murdered, and then also had their pockets picked.
I think everyone knows (or should know) that not one person who made a joke condones rape or thinks that the subject itself is funny. The funny part was the extraneous information at the end of the story, not the rape itself!
What is that joke, exactly? ‘Bet she’ll miss that coffee pot’? Something with shampoo?
Ilowyn’s sig line comes to mind – a man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Your comment was just kind of in the blast radius of the really distasteful stuff and had some language people might object to, so I hid it to be safe. You weren’t really one of the people I was talking to in my post, so my apologies if you thought you were.

No worries sir
and no apology needed. Thank you for the explanation. I really didn’t care that my comment was hidden, as it did contain some salty language. My main beef was with the righteous indignation displayed by some posters. Keep up the good work.
It isn't really that far of a leap
BJJ and MMA are about domination, control and adrenaline. Many fighters compare fighting to sex. Some fighters describe fighting as being better than sex even. When you think about it a little while it’s really not a huge leap. Add to it a strong dislike of females and a certain pathology and you have this monster in the photo above. Nasty nasty stuff. Let’s hope stories such as this one remain unusual. Oh Yeah, Hooray! for DNA.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
that's the angle I'm interested in
