What's the worst thing that's happened

Everyone knows that MMA has grown by leaps and bounds since its conception in 1993 till now. However I've started to notice a trend that are really hurting the sport

1 Ken Shamrock and Tank Abbott, Guys that don't know there carears are finished and just don't want to step away.

2 Kimbo Slice - enough said

3 Dana White While he's a fantastic promoter and bussiness man growing the UFC into a billion dollar company. There are times when he overlooks talent he should sign and his mouth at time gets him into hot water. Not really helping the image of the largest MMA org.

If that had been an option, I think it would be winning.

yeah, Dana can be embarrassing but he has good intentions. The Shaw family on the other hand, now they represent the true enemies of MMA.

I feel like thats what the Kimbo option really means. Kimbo just took what was given to him. The Shaws are the people that created that debacle

Money.

While the sport grows, so does the money aspect. We get guys fighting waaaayyyyyy past their expiration dates, in order to “cash in” on paydays that weren’t available to them in their prime.

Also, those larger paydays make it more tempting for fighters to use PEDs to help them attain the highest level.

Additionally, any time there is money to be made, a certain percentage of scumbags will be drawn to the business. i.e. promoters, cheaters, fixers, etc.

Unfortunately, this where I think a federal commission could be useful, but then again, involving the federal government is a whole other issue.

Of course, these are generalizations and don’t apply in every circumstance, but it is my opinion.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

Underground followings are always ruined when they attain mass success because of the money being made. Just look at the decline in quality of hip hop and rock as they reached their separate peaks in popularity

Over the hill washups are who helped BUILD this sport. guys like tank abott, mark coleman, ken shamrock, kazushi sakuraba. those guys not giving it up arent doing anything but help the smaller promotions make main events.

Whoa now all the founders deserve some form of respect. I’m not trying to take that away. But alot of these past-prime guys are NOW makeing jokes out of themselves and are hurting the sport they built. They cash in on thier names so much that they go from legends to a joke. Watch Ken Shamrocks and Tank Abbot’s last fight with wargods. You can see it on Sherdog.com. Shamrock’s fight was as close to legally fixing a fight as you can get.

None of the above

I would say crooked promoters/ promotions. In the sport itself, there are tons of jump start McDojos and self proclaimed promoters that are looking to make a buck on the talents of others. This happens a lot in boxing and has carried over to MMA.

This is without a doubt the worst thing that has happened to MMA. I know one specific pro fighter that encountered this recently! The promoter is acting like he is Dana White himself and is causing one spectacular fighter to fight elsewhere. This really hurts the fans too!

If EliteXC was an option I’d vote for that.

I bet I could guess about half of the Dana votes.

You guys don’t actually believe that. You’d have to have a fucking lobotomy to believe Dana White has been bad for mixed martial arts.

Dana White is responsible for saving MMA in America if not around the world except in Asia. Like I said in my post he brought the UFC from damn near BANKRUPTCY to a billion dollar company. The man deserves credit getting the sport into the main stream. I really should’ve included EliteXC in the poll because they went and fucked that up all to hell. Dana White has done one hell of alot for the sport. I’ve defended him till I was blue in the face when people tag him for swearing HOWEVER
He does overlook talent that he should try to sign like Carano or Fedor to name but a few.
And not so much the swearing but when he goes after people by name it dosen’t look that good. Remeber this is a sport that the average American either thinks is a dog fight but with people instead or they think is as scripted as the WWE. White acting like he does at times almost makes him seem like the Vince McManhon type.
That said White deserves alot of credit for what he’s done.

What Dana White does as president of the UFC and what he does as a fight promoter are two separate things. Dana does some things great and some things are just very unprofessional. It’s hard to argue that Dana’s last outburst was good for the sport.

Of course that really should be about promoters in general, a lot of guys say and do a lot of things that just doesn’t help the sport grow. Lord know the Shaws didn’t help the sport nor did Calvin Ayre’s involvement and there is a graveyard of failed promotions scattered along the roadside.

there have always been “great hypes/hopes” like Kimbo…as far back as the Jack Johnson/segregated days of boxing. viral media makes it even easier to build a following. it didn’t kill boxing, and it won’t kill MMA.

Stop hatting on Dana he is the man.

MMA McDojo’s.

It seems like every Tom, Dick & Harry strip mall Taekwondo studio has been converted into an ‘MMA gym’ over the last few years. Even legitimate MMA camps have piled onto the money train by selling ‘official certifications’ to any putz who completes a one or two day course. I’ve already seen kids from some of these places getting splattered in local MMA shows.

by Steve4192 on Apr 14, 2009 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

Another huge problem is that all of the networks that are running or have considered running MMA programming are doing it out of their entertainment division. They still don’t consider MMA as a sport. They treat it the same way they treat pro wrasslin’ and American Gladiators.
