Scott Smith: I’m going to stand and bang with him.
|
From our recent interview:
Heading into the fight with Radach, what are you expecting of him, what are you planning for, etc?
Well, just like any MMA fight, you’ve got to be ready for anything. Obviously everybody expects us to stand and bang, you know, there’s no secret to my game - I’m going to stand and bang with him.
Following a win over Radach, would you like a chance to fight the winner of the headlining bout between Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz?
Yeah, absolutely. Those are two great fighters. I like any fight that is going to draw people in to want to watch me fight, and I think Benji is one of those fights. We’re not the main event or anything, but I think the true MMA fans are looking at that as having fight of the night potential right there. And, yeah, Nick and Frank are great fighters and have made great names for themselves, so that would be a great notch on my belt, to beat one of those guys.

Does he do anything else?
Stand and Bang should be the name of his school if he opens one.

I think the sad part about Smith is if he spent the time developing the rest of his game he could turn into an elite fighter but he always wants to stand and bang.

I don’t know, man. That’s real debatable.
He has pretty heavy hands, and alright standup, but it’s been shown several times that he can be outclassed in the striking department (Irvin, Cote, Lawler), and he isn’t any kind of world class grappler. He’s also not any kind of outstanding physical specimen- an average 6’0, and without being particularly ripped, he doesn’t have any kind of spectacular athletic abilities.
I think he’s just the kind of guy who will always be a B/ B+ level fighter.

Shocking turn of events!
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

I would of been surprised if Smith had said anything else, his strategy for every fight is “I’m going to stand and bang with him”.

I guess...
it worked out real well for him in this one.
Smith is a tough son of a bitch, and a powerful guy.
However, Radach has been prone to have brain farts in the past. In retrospect, it was silly of Bas to say that Benji could be the guy to dethrone Anderson.

Not necessarily, Benji is pretty mobile, has longish arms and some big power.
Obviously he has alot of work to do if he can’t get by Smith, but he was winning that fight pretty handily before the KO.

Meh. I’ve always liked Radach as a fighter, he has great top control/ grappling, as well as some much improved striking. I agree that he was tooling Smith up until the knockout. However, he made a couple very noticable errors- first off, that guillotine he went for was ridiculous; I really think he could’ve polished Scott off with strikes if he hadn’t gone for the choke.
Then, he had his hands noticeably lower in the 3’rd period, was reluctant to pull the trigger, and was backpedaling constantly instead of cutting Smith off and coming in at angles (which he was doing very effectively in the first 2 rounds).
It kinda reminds me of his brain fart against Horwich.

People complain about the sub rate dropping. This right here is a good example of why I’m not surprised it is dropping.
Radach goes for the sub, loses it, and loses the fight. If he continued to beat on Smith, he had a good chance of getting the TKO. Even if that didn’t happen, he would have essentially sealed his victory (barring a KO), already being up 2-0 on the majority of scorecards (I’m sure).

wow, sad that Bas
said that. hindsight being 20/20, i don’t think i could ever pick Radach to beat Silva…EVER

No disrespect to Scott Smith, but I get so sick of hearing the phrase, “stand and bang”, especially from that guys that aren’t even that good at it. But hey, he won the fight.

For a guy that’s not that good at what he does, he’s done pretty well for himself. He’s arguably top 25 after his win over Radach.

IMO...
‘Stand and bang’ fighters are the kind who are destined for short lived careers, or at least unsuccessful ones.
Look at guys like Chris Lytle, who has great technical boxing, serious power, decent Jiu Jitsu, and alright wrestling, who choose to just slug it out with everyone he fights. The good fighters he goes up against will play it smart, and either outstrike them by playing a more technical standup game, or take him down, GnP him and/ or sub him.
