Quote of the Day: Anderson Silva Calls Out Wanderlei Silva and Demian Maia

Anderson-silva-defeats-james-irvin-250x250_medium

“How much do you weigh? So why are you going to get yourself in trouble?” Anderson asked of Wanderlei.

Anderson has his own answer to the question: He called Wanderlei’s move to 185 “pretentious.”

“Saying that you will beat me up or submit me is very easy, but there have been people trying to do that for some time and are not reaching their goal, Demian.”

Anderson Silva talking to Brazilian TV program Sensei Sportv.

Agreed.

However, if this is getting Anderson fired up, that is a very good thing…for fans. Not so good for Wandy or Maia.

Anderson Silva calling Wanderlei pretentious is pretty pretentious of Anderson Silva.

Goldberg on Silva vs Silva

Only 3 minutes old is round number 1 and Silva is looking incredible in this fight, right Joe?

ANYTHING that will slow Anderson's retirement plans

is a very good thing. Maybe Ed Soares told him that if he wants to retire in style in a few years, he needs to make the bucks now. Hell, look at how animated Lyoto got after his last fight (Soares’ client as well). He says in the latest FIGHT magazine (to which I have recently subscribed and in which I am tremendously disappointed) that Soares had nothing to do with it, but I doubt he would admit it anyway.

Silva talks a big game?

Other than this comment, when have we ever heard Silva talk at all? Silva has always been regarded as a very humble & nice person even in victory. Cote was given the title shot & he fought him. What more do you want from the man? He has fought & destroyed every person the UFC put in front of him.

by dnevil001 on Apr 10, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree it is the UFC’s fault that he fights cans. But people cannot talk about him being one of the all time greats if he’s going to compete on a lower level. The good news is that the middleweight division might not suck anymore since they added Henderson, Wandy, Bisping and Maia has now arrived. I think Anderson is ok. He did beat Henderson. I would really like to see a rematch of those two…I don’t think Henderson was ready for that fight at the time. Anyway, the man (Silva) is simply not on the same level as Nog, Fedor, Rampage, etc. until he proves himself against top level competition.
Beating a declining-to-retirement Rich Franklin and a bunch of no-names doesn’t do anything for me.

Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson are no-names? Check anybodies rankings to see if you are right about that

by EazyEismydad on Apr 10, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I gave credit for Henderson- read the above post.

Marquart has never done anything.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Apr 10, 2009 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Franklin was the champ so you still have to give him credit.

True, he is on the downside of his career but he was dominant in that division at the time Silva faced him.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

by dnevil001 on Apr 10, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess I can give him that. So he has 2 significant wins- Franklin and Henderson. The second win over Franklin falls under the “over-the-hill clause”.

That’s funny- he also has two losses…. to no-namers.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Apr 10, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

So basically, Anderson Silva is 2-2 with a bunch of filler.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Apr 10, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Ahahahahaha. There is a difference between winning and completely dominating your competition. Silva has lost one round in his UFC career. He finishes everyone.

If it weren’t for Silva people would say Rich Franklin is one of the best middleweights ever.

"Japan is half-Machida" - iiowyn

by Day Man on Apr 10, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

If people like Marquardt dont count then I guess no one in the MW division counts. Maia hasn’t done more, neither has Bisping, or Mousasi, Akiyama, Jorge Santiago, Misaki, F. Shamrock, or anyone else outside the UFC.

So all you have left is Lawler, Franklin, Okami, and Henderson.

By your standards everyone’s records are just a bunch of filler.

Seriously who would you have him prove himself against

by EazyEismydad on Apr 11, 2009 7:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure Anderson

Begged Dana to let him fight cote…. He would lie awake at night thinking… please Mr. White… just let me fight “The Predator”.

Silva had nothing to do with that decision. He had no new opponents with enough name recognition at the time, ufc thought it could rake in some quick cash with Cote, who had some name recognition.

by JaeeJaee on Apr 10, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

In all fairness

Cote beat himself, I’m sure Anderson would have eventually done it, but Cote jacked his knee and that was it for the fight. You have to give credit were it’s due though, Cote took Silva furhehr than anyone else in the UFC, and was probably poised to take him into round 4.

by proflex on Apr 10, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Dude..

I’m not a big fan of Anderson myself, but “tomoato cans”? come on man. You’re seriously not all there if you’re gonna say some shit like that. Humiliated Leben, dominated one of the best middleweights in Franklin (twice), submitted Hendo (a guy who isn’t very easy to submit), and how can you call Luiz Azeredo a nobody? You’re entitled to your own opinion and so am I :) I’m gonna call it like I see it…. YOU NEED KNOWLEDGE on this here sport.

Context

Anderson switches from talking about Wanderlei in the second graf to a quote that is apparently about Meia in the third. Here’s the missing transition:

Asked to name five opponents that he considered ready to face him for a title shot, Anderson didn’t include Wanderlei or Wanderlei’s new training partner, Demian Maia. In fact, he had a message for Maia too: "Saying that you will beat me up or submit me is very easy, but there have been people trying to do that for some time and are not reaching their goal, Demian."

… it’s too bad they couldn’t bother to include the five opponents he did name. I’d be interested to see who Anderson Silva puts on the list of fighters ready to face him for a title shot.

And...

even at that, yes Maia has excellent BJJ, but Silva has some pretty damned good BJJ himself. We just never get to see it very often. Don’t forget, Lutter has “better” BJJ then Silva, and he didn’t catch him in the almost 2 minutes he had Silva on the mat.

"pretentious", says A. Silva of the Daily Globe...

“pretentious” is the only thing in quotes for the W. Silva quotes.

Haven’t you seen the preview of a movie you knew was horrible but they quote one word like this: "Mike Hunt of the Quohog Chronicle calls it “entertaining”… even though Mike Hunt probably really said “not entertaining” or “mildly entertaining”.

I think this is probably a non-discussion.

Nobody said “Henderson did not lose”. Henderson lost via RNC in rd. 2. We all saw it. The point was that he dominated Silva in Rd. 1, and had he not gotten stupid and changed his gameplan in Rd. 2, we can make the arguement that he would ahve likely continued to wipe the floor with him.

I make no secret about it.

The only fighter I hate more than Silva is Brandon Vera. Rashad Evans is also up there. Vera is by far the worst offender with his super-gay dance that he does. Fortunately, he sucks, so I don’t have to see it much anymore.

There is no place in this sport for arrogance. Act like you’ve been there before. Everyone at that level deserves respect.

WHY?

Cuz winning the first round is always indicative of what happens in the rest of the fight?

hendo doesn’t even dominate with wrestling consistently, and gasses a lot… He couldn’t hold A Silva down for 5 rounds… He barely eeked out a decision against Rich, who’s game is similar to a lesser level than Silva’s (Silva has better BJJ, striking, Clinch, etc) and Rich won most of the exchanges on the feet, and stuffed a few shots… Your assessment seems biased….
