Chael Sonnen vs. Wilson Gouveia at UFC 102; Mac Danzig vs. Jim Miller at UFC 100
Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.

Gouveia enters the bout in August after a disappointing loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 95 in February. Prior to that loss, the Brazilian had won his previous two contests at middleweight since dropping from the 205lb weight class.
Chael Sonnen returns to action at UFC 102 after a loss on the same Feb card to submission specialist, Demian Maia, in his return to the Octagon after a stay in the WEC and other organizations over the past few years.

Damn Danzig drops two in a row and they give him Jim Miller? They really don’t seem to care about protecting their TUF winners anymore

Yeah, I think this is Danzig’s send off fight.

They should have given him Junie. =/

I like that they are not taking it easy on Danzig or anyone else for that matter.
I expect the TUF winners to be treated just like any other fighter. I like Danzig but he seems to need to work on his ground game A LOT if he ever wants to seriously compete in the UFC.

danzig is too small. maybe he could try and drop down to FW at WEC if when he loses..

I agree with you.
He has some tools but cannot seem to get over the hump to that next level.

the sonnen gouveia matchup is a pretty good one..
i think its a toin coss (or a little towards wilson) but maybe sonnen could pull it off..

I see Gouviea taking Sonnen fairly easily.
Gouviea has proven to be tough on the feet and we have all seen what happens to Sonner once the fight hits the mat.

Agreed, Gouviea takes this one. I’m not too big on this matchup.

the ability to put him on his back
and beat him up.
Gouveia isn’t exactly a wizard of the guard.

Hopefully Jim will come more prepared and actually watch footage of Danzig and get back on a winning role, Sonnen vs. Gouveia should be a very interesting fight too.

I want to like Danzig
but he really needs to get over his own experience. He seems to think that it should somehow earn him respect and fear in his opponents.
He needs to humble up and get hungry.

Hopefully that last beatdown he took
will push him in that direction.

Boy, UFC 102 is shaping up to be horrible. They aren’t even really trying. Two of the prelims at UFC 100 are better than anything other than the ME at 102…

i was reminscing about how awesome ufc 91 was. remember when they showed that awesome prelim between the two lightweights that like, would have had trouble hacking it in the IFL? oh, wait.

Higher rankings alone do not a good fight make. That card had nine of nine fights shown, and the worst on it was still a good scrap. That’s quality.

thats right, a good fight is made by the promotion its in. when robinson-bocek type fights happen in nightclubs with 500 people in them its a crappy fight between crappy fighters in a crappy promotion. make it an undercard fight in the ufc and if its lucky enough to be part of a card with lots of mismatches and actually make broadcast its all “oh man what a war bros best show ever”.
by nigelzackit on Apr 10, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's ridiculous
The ‘goodness’ of a fight is a function of many things, but the promotion it is a part of is not one of them. That’s why Quenneville/Evans is one of the best fights of the year so far, even though it was at XMMA 7: Inferno.

If those are all main card fights, yeah. But there is still a lot of time, so I’m gonna bite my tongue for awhile.

His back is really old too. Randy shuffles around like an old man and Nog looks half punchdrunk when you see him in person. I don’t have high hopes for this fight.

I have to disagree. I’ve been waiting to see these two fight one another for years and I think it’ll be a great fight.

You disagree that Couture looks old and Nogueira looks punch drunk? Or just about whether that will lead to a good fight?
by Jonathan Snowden on Apr 10, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stylistically, I think it’s a great fight. I look at the rush to bury Couture and Big Nog as a backwards way of discrediting Lesnar and Mir.

It is an interesting matchup, I just think it is three years too late to be great. I was at Xtreme Couture and I swear to you: Randy moves like an old man. I think that year off was the end for him as a serious contender.
Maybe I am wrong. I hope I am. I love both guys, collected DVD sets of all their fights, was thrilled to meet them both. Maybe that is why I don’t want to see them hold on too long.
by Jonathan Snowden on Apr 10, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just wish the Randy vs Nog fight was 3 years ago. I don’t think the UFC has reached the over the age boxing style fights but this is close. At least its not Shamrock vs Coleman.
This is a lose, lose fight for both guys. If Nog wins he beat an old man, if he loses then he lost to an old man. If Randy get hammered then he’s over the hill. If he somehow wins this fight then Nog really is washed up and Mirs win doesn’t mean shit.

Maybe they have both declined at a similar rate and this will be just as good of a fight as it would have been three years ago….just a little slower…

Looks like they are ready to get rid of Danzig and Sonnen...
Both of those guys are going to get stomped IMO.

![Chael Sonnen says "I want to say hello to my brother, Yushin Okami":
"I want to say hello to my brother, Yushin through this interview. I am saddened that he returned to Japan - it feels like I parted with a close friend. Though Yushin lost against me, he came forward and asked to train with me: Is this a Japanese thing? It is admirable that he tried to learn from an opponent who defeated him. While at Team Quest in Portland, he thoroughly handled me during training. I was lucky that I managed to defeat him in our fight. I probably won't agree to a rematch with him (laughs). The one fighter whom I never want to fight again - that is Yushin Okami."
