Finishing Rates by Country in 2008

2k8_finishing_rates_medium

The UFC and WEC represent the American portion, while Dream and Sengoku make up the Japanese side.  We're looking at some pretty small samples (262 American fights, 107 Japanese fights) so there isn't too much significance to the numbers.  I find it interesting that fights are finished at an equivalent rate, though the distribution of finishes vary.  Here's the totals for the individual promotions:

KO TKO KO/TKO SUB DEC OTHER
UFC 8.96% 32.34% 41.29% 26.87% 31.84% 0.00%
WEC 8.20% 36.07% 44.26% 26.23% 27.87% 1.64%
DREAM 5.36% 23.21% 28.57% 35.71% 32.14% 3.57%
SENGOKU 9.80% 19.61% 29.41% 39.22% 31.37% 0.00%
AVERAGE 8.40% 29.81% 38.21% 29.81% 31.17% 0.81%

Other = no contests, DQ's, etc.

I'd love to see this expanded

to include Shooto, Pancrase, etc
It seems like the 2nd tier Japanese promotions feature no end of draws and decisions.

When Leland gets that crawler written, I definitely will look into that. Because I’m manually adding on to my own database, I’m only keeping up with the bigger promotions. I need to get the EXC and Strikeforce stuff up to date.

A little surprised to see Sengoku has highest KO%

But not surprised to see WEC has lowest Decision%. Just shows how consistently good their shows are.

I wouldn’t really put too much stock in the straight KO numbers. How things get classified as a KO or TKO is a pretty big gray area.

Lopsided matches would also give you those numbers.

Yeah, the UFC should look to Japanese promos for matchmaking advice.

How’s the ref stuff coming along? I didn’t know if I should start again before the spreadsheet is updated.

The spreadsheet is constantly being updated. We’ve got less than 270 fights left, which means we’re about 2/3rds of the way done. These last chunks will be the hardest, so any and all help is appreciated.

I will do some more fights this evening, looking like its mostly prelims left though.

Its hard to know what to make of these numbers. First of all Dream and Sengoku both have a relatively small sample size.
Also the Japan/US could be as simple as ring/cage.
I think that in general the fighters fighting in the US are bigger in each weight class than in Japan. This combined with lots of strong college wrestling backgrounds probably leads to few subs and more knockouts in the US.

I dislike Matt Hughes.
