Okay guys...

None of my friends are gamers and I know there are a few around here….

I need to play this game, which means I’m gonna need a system.

The eternal question: Xbox or PS3 ?

Contributor Emeritus - BloodyElbow.com

by Chris Nelson on Mar 9, 2009 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

Xbox 360 has more users, is cheaper, has a larger library of games if I remember correctly, downloadable content (which will be pretty important in this game), a much better online component, and Netflix.

NB: You’ll probably want to go with some Xbox deal with a hardrive, as it’s practically necessary, even though that will mark up the price a bit. I think you may be able to get deals on Xbox 360 Elite systems, which would do the trick.

PS3 has better graphics (in theory at least, not every game actualizes that potential), blue-ray, and some analysts think that the PS3 may overtake the 360 in 2009 (though they said the same thing about ’08). The PS3 has downloadable content as well, however, they generally get the short end of the stick in terms of multiplatform releases (a la Fallout 3).

Unless you wanna pay an ass load of money a month for online play, get a PS3. You won’t have to risk the Red Rings of Death every time you turn it on either, and Sony doesn’t make you pay out the ass for a wireless network adapter or hard drive that can fit more than 256 MBs.

Also, Sony has a better VOD service on PS3 than Microsoft has with Netflix. Go read the horror stories if you want.

360 may be cheaper, but by the time you buy the hard drive, Xbox Live subscription, wireless adapter and all the pther crap you’re better off having bought a PS3

by N. Rodriguez on Mar 9, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

That basically describes the thought process I went through when I decided to sell my 360 and buy a PS3.

You sound like a fanboy. I thought I left those at the gaming forum.

You don’t need a HDD.
You don’t need to purchase XBL if you’re not going to play online.
You don’t need a wireless adapter if you can connect it via ethernet Cable.

But if you’re going to game online, download content from the marketplace, you will need a HDD and XBL gold. Gold subscription for one year is $50.

PS3 you have free online service
BluRay player built in
Wi-Fi ready

PS3 does not come with a headset. You’ll have to buy one for $50

Best deal for a 360 if you want to game offline and are only buying one for UFC, get the Arcade Model for $200.
Planning on going all the way…Get the Pro Model for $300

Arcade does not include headset….I think.

Best deal for a PS3 is the $500 160GB Model that comes with 2 free games.

Thanks for the pricing breakdown (and all the advice so far, dudes).

Money is a concern, and I was thinking PS3 was cheaper than Xbox for some reason. But it sounds like even the deluxe Xbox setup + subscription is less expensive than a PS3. I’ve never played anything online and wasn’t planning on getting a subscription (another reason I was leaning toward PS3 at first) but it might be cool, especially if BE folks are gonna be playing Undisputed.

Also, you don’t need to buy the $500 PS3.

I agree, but I think $400 for a 80GB PS3 is not a good deal when you can get twice the HDD space and 2 free games for 100 dollars extra.

You can also buy a used one and swap HDD if you need space.

Is that all they’re selling these days? I bought my PS3 for like $300 a couple years ago.

Yeah. You’re going to have to buy a used one if you want a cheaper price.

Though it’s rumored that a PS3 price drop is coming no later than June.

I also recommend you buy at amazon since you won’t have to pay taxes, and you can take advantage of the free 2 day shipping trial. Just make sure you cancel the trial after you get your shipment, or your credit card will be charged 60 dollars.

You don’t need to spend $50 on a headset if you already have a bluetooth headset for your phone or whatever.

It’s best to buy the official PS3 headset, since the rest will randomly work.

Slight 360 fangirl here.

RROD isn’t really an issue anymore, especially with the newer models. I suffered it myself early last year (my console actually lasted longer than the average) and it took approximately a week and a half for me to send my console out, get it fixed and get it back. All free.

PS3 might have free online gaming, but it’s nowhere near as functional as the 360’s. We have a bigger library of arcade games, downloadables and add-ons. Not to mention, a heck of a lot more people to play with. Granted, there are a lot of reasons for you to get the console. It has a different focus with game genres (more RPGs and all that), you get a blu-ray player, you like the superior specs, etc. IHateMMA’s breakdown is very good; you should look into what the console offers individually and see for yourself.

by Gong on Mar 10, 2009 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

My $.02 on ps3 vs. XB360

is pretty simple. The ps3 really is a sweet, sweet multimedia machine. It’s the heart and soul of my home theater setup, and the bluray player is still the absolute best on the market. So if you’re into hi-def movies, and have a sweet surround sound setup, the ps3 will be an integral part of your home theater.

If you’re a rabid gamer, and you don’t care much for the hi-def stuff, and don’t need loads and loads of hard drive space, get the 360. No question, it’s the better gaming machine today. And the library of games is really extensive, whereas the ps3 is still fairly lacking in high-end game content. The controller is better on the 360 (even though I absolutely LOATHE the look of it, it really is better than the dualshock layout Sony’s been using for the last five million years), and the online content is set up way better than on the ps3.

With the gradual breakdown of exclusivity for game licenses, eventually the decisions are really going to be based on which machine performs the best. If you’re looking purely for gaming, the 360 is your machine. If you’re looking for something that will provide a little more utility, and you’re into home theater stuff, the ps3 will knock it out of the park.

Just my opinion, though.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

Chris

I have all 3 but if I could only have 1 it would be 360 HANDS DOWN! Dude, seriously if you don’t care too much about bluray then you dont really need a PS3. I’ve had all 3 (PS3/Wii/360) for a while now and I still do 95% of my gaming on 360. Its just better all around. Here are my reasons. If I list any multiplats games its because they have been proven to be better on 360, online/features/graphically etc. Again, these are just MY reasons and my opinions. Dont wanna start any console wars up in this mother lol!

Good Lord Son! Off the top of your head?

I also have all three and IMO 360 clubs all systems for gameplay. xFenixKnightx covers it all but I will add my disdain for the Sony dual shock controller. After about two weeks of use I find that the PS3 controllers’ secondary sticks become less accurate. Kind of nit picky, but on a game like Undisputed you are going to have to use those sticks alot.

That's great, but how does it affect Lyoto Machida?

Also

If you’re getting a console for this game and this game alone. Yeah, 360 is the way to go. I’d go with the 299.00 model that comes with a 60GB HDD, 1 month free of Xbox LIVE and a headset for online. Most games are dev’d on 360 and this one is no different, thats why you always see Dana and Co. playing the Xbox360 version. The PS3 will be a port of the 360 version which usually leads to a slight diff in quality. IE, textures, loading, resolution. The main thing is the online. 8player party chat is a blast and its so easy to use unlike PS3’s PSN which is still trying to catch up with XboxLIVE. Thats why PSN is free, its not even close to what LIVE offers.

not even close to a meaningful factor to a casual gamer. he’s got bigger issues to affect his decision.

XBL is great for hardcore gamers who do a lot of online gaming. I don’t see how this affects a casual gamer buying a game with no confirmed online play.

That is good to hear. Amongst my friends it has become an acceptable defense to start throwing elbows and knees as soon as the fight starts to get away from you. The idea being to open up cuts, but usually ending in a DQ.

That's what I'm talking about!

It’s just so horribly plain (though other games have done worse), especially in light of FN4’s reveal. And since I don’t follow much boxing, I’m merely looking forward to playing as Pacquiao again. Probably take on Tyson. It’s always hilarious trying to take the big guy down.

Q: even though it doesn’t have the built-in Blu-Ray, Xbox will still look fine on an HDTV right?

Contributor Emeritus - BloodyElbow.com

by Chris Nelson on Mar 10, 2009 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong...

… but as far as I know, it should. I don’t own an HDTV, but the graphical comparisons I’ve seen that have been done in the past show that games look just as good on either console – albeit minor colour differences.

by Gong on Mar 10, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Chris

Xbox360 plays games on DVD9 format but the information recorded on it is usally in HD 720p. Its then upscaled to 1080p if you have a 1080p HDTV.

Heres the fact even though PS3 games are on a bluray you’ll find that 99.9% of the games are not in 1080p They are in 720p or even lower. Take Call of Duty 4 for example. It only runs somewhere around 600p but your TV upscales it. The higher the rez the lower amount of info the dev can put on the disc. So graphics and physics all have to be tweaked to fit on 1 disc.

Bottom line is yeah its gonna look kickass. 99.9% of the time better than on PS3 in fact because 360 is easier to program for.

Xbox 360 = A PC’s cousin which is why developers love it. Its easy to code and program for therefore getting more pwer from it.

PS3 = The Cell ( A new type of processer) which is *according to a lot of Devs “A pain in the ass” to dev for but has “potential” for better graphics than 360. This has only been seen on 1 game from PS3 and thats Killzone 2. And yes Killzone 2 on PS3 is gorgeos and I love it, BUT it took about 5 years to make lmao!
