Rumor: Kurt Pellegrino vs. Josh Neer set for August UFC Fight Night
MMATraining says they've confirmed this fight with one of the fighters' camps, but I'm treating this as a rumor because, well, I don't know MMATraining, plus the rarely reliable MMABay is also reporting the same. At the same time, I don't know why someone would bother fabricating a rumor about this fight. Nonetheless:
MMATraining.com can confirm through sources close to the fighters camp that a planned main event between Kurt Pellegrino and Josh Neer will soon be finalized to take place on a yet to be announced Ultimate Fight Night August 5th, 2009.
The timing of the show makes sense - since TUF 9 will be done in June, this Fight Night would most likely serve as a lead-in to "UFC 101," presumably airing a few days before the PPV which is rumored to be headlined by Couture-Nogueira.
As for the fight itself, this is another great piece of matchmaking by Joe Silva. Pellegrino and Neer are two guys at very similar points in their UFC careers and have both earned TV time in their fights with common opponent Nate Diaz. At a time when the 155-pound class is sorely in need of breakout stars, either could be poised for a run at the title with a win here.

This makes the most sense
for both Pellegrino and Neer. Guida thought he was going to be getting either Pellegrino or Lauzon next, but with Lauzon injured for a while and Guida now set to face Diego Sanchez in June, Pellegrino and Neer are in the perfect situation to face each other. Both have similar UFC records (Pellegrino: 5-3, Neer: 4-3), and both just won convincingly on the same UFN 17 card. Great matchmaking, Joe Silva.
Now if we can only see Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard…the trash-talking would blow even big Diaz vs. Frank Shamrock out of the water ;)
I like it.
Should be a fun fight.
