UFC 96: The Morning After

With a full-night sleep to digest what went down last night at UFC 96 I have come to a few conclusions:

  • Pete Sell should be cut from the UFC.
  • Dana White probably finds Tamdan McCrory annoying now.
  • Friends shouldn’t be allowed to commentate on each other’s fights.
  • Ref. Yves Lavigne should probably be fired, or at least go back to ref school.
  • Ref. Rick Fike should just be fired.
  • Rampage don’t give a fuck about no leg kicks.
  • Rogan looks weird in orange.
  • Jim Miller is a dog (in a good way).
  • Brandon Vera is back?
  • Kendall Grove has long arms.
  • Shane Carwin is legit.
  • Columbus got what they paid for.
  • Skunk-beer gives me a hangover.

Jim Miller is a dog (in a good way).

This, a million times. Much respect to that man, he worked right up until the end when he was just grinding his face into the mat and wouldn’t stop trying to hit the single leg that he was never going to finish on a wrestler like Maynard. I don’t think Jim lost too much standing in the UFC’s eyes with his performance last night, and the Miller boys are still a damn good 5-1 in the UFC.

agreed, he may have lost, but he showed true heart.

Dana White probably finds Tamdan McCrory annoying now.

Yeah, what was that whole rant about? I kind of liked the guy until that, now I just think he’s stupid.

Ref. Yves Lavigne should probably be fired, or at least go back to ref school.

100%. I used to think he was a good ref but that performance was disgraceful, how do you pull a guy off when he is beating someone on the ground and then not stop the fight? He had about 5 chances to legitimately stop the fight before he did and he put the fighter’s health in jeopardy, there is no more egregious offense than that.

McCrory wanted to walk out to “Thunderhorse” by Dethklok (who are a fake metal band on the [adult swim] show Metalocalypse) and Dana wouldn’t let him. I’d probably have just kept my mouth shut, but it must suck not to be able to walk out to the song you want when you know NO ONE is ever going to get to see your entrance.

I lold when he said it was a song from Metalocalypse.

by AA'sFlyingKnee on Mar 8, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I heard what he said and I understand, but really is it that big of a deal? He acts like he is the only fighter who had his music chosen by Dana but it happens all the time. Get over it dude.

by ufc4 on Mar 8, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear you. I guess if the UFC really cared, they would’ve cut his post-fight interview.
Dana was probably all “I love that fuckin’ kid, he’s got fuckin’ balls bro.”

Maybe Dana feels sorry for him cuz he looks like all the kids Dana used to take lunch money from back in middle school.

THUNDERHORSE

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

If he chose a song that could be easily licensed..

..he might have got his wish.

You can’t just play anything you want. UFC has to license that stuff.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

Dethklok is a semi real band in addition to a fictional one. The lead singer/guitarist is the creator of the show. They toured with Chimaira and Soilent Green during June and early July 2008

That being said, I’m a loser for knowing that

by EazyEismydad on Mar 9, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s okay, I knew when I wrote “fake band” that someone would call me on it and I did it anyway. :P

I still can’t believe Brendan Small plays everything except the drums. What a great man.

Tamdan’s speech got me watching old episodes again… “I’M DOCTOR ROCKZO, THE ROCK AND ROLL CLOWN! I DO COCAINE!!!”

Another note:

This was almost the mourning after for Munoz fans.

lol I was going to put something in about Matt Hamill’s post fight speech, but it wasn’t PC enough.

Carwin is legit.

That punch thrown by just about anyone else, from that distance, doesn’t drop Gonzaga. Look out, world.

by Derek Suboticki on Mar 8, 2009 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

I’m pretty shocked that no one is talking about him today. Shouldn’t hype train be loading up?

I think the thing is, taking nothing from Carwin, that many people feel if GG would have pushed him back and hit him a couple more times, he would have finished him. Instead, he takes a monster down, doesn’t finish and BAM!

And damn, Carwin has some dynamite in those gigantic fists.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

My sentiments exactly.

yeah but it seems like carwin is incredibly easy to hit…

by dbcb on Mar 8, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Easy to hit, but he took Gonzaga KO blows and stood.

Guy’s made of iron.

by Ozzz on Mar 8, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

My only issue with Carwin is that he ate a lot of punches before he finally landed big. I believe if he was trading with someone like Brock, he wouldn’t have had such a good night. He’s gonna say he wasn’t rocked, but dude, just look at his face and how easily Gonzaga backed him up into the fence…he was rocked.

But hell of a knock out, man has some power.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Mar 8, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, you let Brock tag you like that and you’re gonna have a bad night. That being said I like Carwin, he’s a down to earth guy and has some skill.

Didn’t he look unsure of himself when he was taken down? Don’t think he’s used to that.

by soadtrails on Mar 9, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The underdog/upset of the night had to be Cecil Peoples scoring the Jackson/Jardine fight correctly. He must have watched all 3 rounds.

by Heenan on Mar 8, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

I gave round 1 to Jardine, as did most observers and the judges not named Peoples.

by klown on Mar 8, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Rampage lost that first round.

Those takedowns may have just saved him from a dissappointing loss.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Mar 8, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t write that correctly. What I meant was that People’s didn’t create his proverbial split decision which he normally fuck’s up all the rounds. Fucking up only 1 round on People’s scorecard is like Serra knocking out GSP. It was shear luck.

by Heenan on Mar 8, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions

You forgot one

Rampage is nipple-tweak-proof! :)

New UFC graphics on this PPV. They looked nice. Same intro and music though =/

Kendall Grove has long arms.

I really want to like the guy but every time he opens his mouth or does his stupid gang sign stuff he just irritates the shit out of me :(

Dammit Kendall, I was hoping you’d rep us skinny guys!

by Benicio on Mar 9, 2009 7:48 AM EDT reply actions

I cannot stand Grove. His post fight antics are retarded.

they are so original tho.

by mmafiend on Mar 9, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed. if you wanna train w/ tito, that’s great. but don’t copy his attitude or antics. the ‘gravedigger mime’ act has always been inappropriate.

btwn that, munoz sick knockout and lack of followup to see if he was ok, and that f’d up ref job of the pete sell match, this is one of those events that the naysaying senators who keep mma banned in some states may rally around.
