Clip of the Day: David Gardner Has a Fail

Any MMA fan with half a brain could've told you that Shinya Aoki would submit David Gardner at DREAM.7 last night. But David Gardner, god bless him, walked into Saitama Super Arena with something to prove: that he could fail harder than nearly everyone already expected him to. Video of the full fight is above - see if you can spot where it all went wrong for the American.

Is there a funnier thing to say before you get choked?

Might as well just said

“Goodybye Japan.”

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Yah but not near as funny!

One of these guys need to have their next fight in Magic Pant with “Hello, Japan!” along the legs.

Funny.

I didn’t think it would be something that obvious. Didn’t DG also miss a foot lock when SA had him in a body triangle?

Aoki...

has GREAT back of the head strikes

Honestly, what the hell was up with that? The referee is either blind or turning his eye. Gardner was a complete idiot though, I seriously couldn’t believe it when I saw it.

Right...

Aoki was going to win regardless. But at some point step in and say “no back of head” and if he does it again stand them up. I mean, it isn’t fair that Gardner (who had very little chance of winning to begin with) also has to sit there and get tagged in the back of the head

Yeah

One would think that he would be a little less willing to intentionally illegally harm his opponent given the whole downward elbows bit from JZ. Aoki is quickly becoming a fighter that I want to see knocked out in every fight.

It’s definitely getting harder and harder to cheer for him.

Aoki can actually strike to the back of the head...

while holding his opponent’s gloves. I’d love to see BJ lick his gloves clean of Aoki’s blood.

What is back of the head?

Seriously, who defines back of the head in Japan? I know less than a year ago the rules of Shooto were recently changed to add this rule, but still what is the definition for major promotions such as Dream, Sengoku, and even Shooto.

Is it behind the ears, top of the spine (lower back of the head), 1/2" from centerline, refs choice, or some other definition?

I’m not a big fan of the back of the head rule. Mainly cause other than the spine and surrounding areas are really the only places I think need to be protected (strongly). If in a real fight one would realistically use that part as an offensive weapon then it should be okay to hit. A rear headbutt for a rear attacker is taught in most any MA. Due to the fact fighters wear gloves I’m not against the back of head rule, but certainly not a fan of it. If the fighters didn’t wear gloves it’s almost a good defense to get punched in the forehead/back of the head as knuckles certainly would be broken.

A couple times it looked like Gardner tried to break Aoki’s hold by doing reverse sit-ups. If he hadn’t let Aoki take his back after the initial takedown he might’ve had a chance, surprised he lasted as long as he did. Surprisingly entertaining fight, enjoyed it.

When a fight starts with one guy being a star and the other guy being someone you have to look up on fight finder to see who the hell they are then you can almost expect something for the highlight reel but I would of never expected it to be “Hello Japan” :D

I like how the first thing Aoki says when he addresses the crowd is an exaggerated “Hello Japan!!”

I am an Aoki fan. I love grappling. BJ, Sherk, Ken-Flo would all kill him. This fight would have been stood up (in the UFC) 2-3 times from either lack of action or strikes to the back of the head.

I think Aoki is a great fighter but anyone who watched this fight with Gardner has to think he is way overrated. If BJ or Sherk allowed Gardner to his feet after having his back a lot of people on this site would be screaming for BJ to retire.

A fight is never stood up

When one guy has the others back and either has his hooks in or a full body triangle. They’ll let that go the entire round.

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 8, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No honest ref in america would have stood that up. They might have done something about the rabbit punches though.

by George Lucas on Mar 8, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would...

have gotten stood up for the punches to the back of the head well before it ever got stood up for lack of action. It takes an amazing lack of action for a fight to get stood up from either mount or back control

The only time I've seen...

a fight stood up from mount that I can remember was Gregor Gracie against Doug Gordon at Ring of Combat XVIII. My write up on that event is here.

Basically he got mount over and over and did nothing with it. In the second round he took mount and did nothing…he just sat there. It was a mount and pray. The ref was totally right standing it up as he wasn’t throwing strikes, working for a sub…nothing. It was amazing.

Other than something that bad or fouls a fight should never be stood up from a dominant position. You’re totally right George.

In a UK show last year Baroni achieved full mount only to be stood up about 10 seconds later.

I'd chalk that up to karma...

Filho has been stood up from mount several times IMO. I believe he was stood up a couple of times from mount against Gregory Bouchelaghem.

IMO should be IIRC.

From the bodogFIGHT Lindland/Fedor event, Kristof Midoux had Roman Zentsov mounted and was stood up.

“I think David was waving his hand to the audience, saying ‘Hello Japan’ during the fight,” speculated Aoki. “Maybe he thinks he’s on vacation? But I’m here to get the job done, so I choked him and finished him. Hello Japan!”

I have the event downloaded but haven’t got round to watching it yet. But that is just too funny……

indeed a most epic fail.

Gardner should have suspected something tricky to occur if by nothing else but because of the infamous Aoki pants. but then again the bright pants should have helped to bring significant attention to the ankle lock that Gardner completely missed.

What a douche.

Dicking around while Aoki has your back. That’s going to end well.

LOL Thats what I thought. The #1 ranked LW in the world, who is a grappling freak has your back……perhaps a bit of focus might be the most suitable action. David Gardner, you made my day!
