Dan Miller vs. Yushin Okami at UFC 98
Just a day after officially announcing UFC 98: Lesnar vs. Mir 2, scheduled for May 23rd in Las Vegas, the UFC confirmed most of the rumored fights for the card, including a surprise middleweight scrap between Dan Miller and Yushin Okami.
Miller (11-1, 3-0 UFC) is a on a serious roll along with his lightweight brother Jim, after both joined the UFC ranks following the dissolution of the IFL. A standout submission specialist training out of the AMA Fight Club in northern New Jersey, Miller most recently dispatched uber-prospect and talented wrestler Jake Rosholt with a guillotine choke in just 1:03 of the first round at UFC Fight Night 17 in February. Miller will certainly have to utilize more than just his grappling to deal with Okami, who has bested superior grapplers like Dean Lister with relative ease.
Okami (23-4, 7-1 UFC) has risen steadily through the UFC middleweight ranks, defeating such notable fighters as Alan Belcher, Evan Tanner, Jason MacDonald, Mike Swick, and Dean Lister along the way. Despite his stellar record, Okami has yet to earn a title shot, and many believe it may be due to his frequent lack of finishing ability and poor marketability in the US.
Nonetheless, it will be hard to deny Okami a title shot if he moves to 8-1 in the UFC wth a win over Miller, although the contendership at 185 is still confusing at best: Nate Marquardt and Demian Maia are certainly at the top of the ladder, while Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping will square off at UFC 100 apparently for the right to challenge for the title, and meanwhile, Thales Leites gets his shot at UFC 97 in May.
Even UFC president Dana White suggested Okami would be in line for a title shot following his decision win over Dean Lister at UFC 92 in December, but White has seemingly swallowed his words since then. A loss against the talented but still somewhat-unproven Miller would be devastating for Okami's title hopes, but Okami is extremely well-rounded and has dominated both strikers and grapplers in his career.
The bout is currently scheduled for the main televised card of UFC 98. The confirmed card currently is as follows:
Televised Card:
Main Event: Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar - UFC Heavyweight Championship
Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra
Yushin Okami vs. Dan Miller
Sean Sherk vs. Frank Edgar
Preliminary Card:
James Irvin vs. Drew McFedries
Phillipe Nover vs. Kyle Bradley
Pat Barry vs. Tim Hague
Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao
Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff
George Roop vs. David Kaplan
--a rumored bout between Josh Koscheck and Chris Wilson has not yet been confirmed by the UFC, but will likely be added to the televised card to finalize the event.

Goddamnit. It would be an absolutely awesome match if Okami wasn’t already deserving of a title shot.

The winner HAS to get the next shot
So I am ok with it. Miller by submission, though.

You really think that the winner is gonna get pushed ahead of Marquardt, Maia (or the winner if they do end up fighting), or the winner of Bisping/Henderson?

Could be wrong but I do
Hendo beating Bisping’s ass is too far away imo.

i hope miller wins this but i think okami would be able to neutralize dan's skills just like he does everytime..

Excellent fight
Gotta root for Okami in this one. This card is starting to look pretty intriguing.

Okami just isn't getting a title shot, is he.
A win over Miller would be big for Okami, and vice versa for Miller. There is some outcry from some MMA fans that Okami deserves a title shot, and I have to agree to the point that if Leites and Cote can get Title shots, then why not Okami?
This undercard actually doesn’t look too bad. I’d like to see what Nover can do, I was very impressed by Barry and his leg kicks, Houston Alexander is always fun to watch, I think that Yoshida despite his loss to Koscheck can be an upper-midtier or higher Welterweight, and Irvin vs McFedries should be a standup battle.
I’m calling it now Miller by sub in the second, after which everyone clamoring for a title shot for him will be nowhere to be found just like the Fabricio fanatics did after Werdum got KFTO of the UFC.
Since when is Irvin/McFedries on the undercard – sure it may not have much importance beyond who gets cut, but it’ll probably be a KO finish.

Just curious
why you’re so confident in that pick? Obviously, Miller has a chance just like anyone does, but I think it’s a small one. Dean Lister is a far better submission guy than Miller and Okami tooled him. Mike Swick and Alan Belcher are far better strikers than Miller and Okami had his way with them also.
Why does Miller “def” have this one? Okami has excellent wrestling, solid striking, good ground-and-pound and excellent submission defense…what can Miller do to him?
Miller has one intangilbe Lister doesn’t: Heart. He also finds ways to finish fights if you look at his history where as Okami tends to take a fight to decision. Well, that doesn’t work against a guy like Miller who is constantly looking for submissions early and often. If Rosholt couldn’t overpower Miller (Roshalt is a worldclass wrestler and big for 185) I don’t expect Okami too either.
I’m not as confident as you in the outcome, but I think it’s definitely close. Okami is not a guy that makes many mistakes. Miller will have to be on top of his game to take this one. He’s certainly got a good chance, in my opinion.

I think Roholt had the infamous “Octagon jitters”

Yeah you guys are right, when I think about it. Plus you could hear Mark Laimon in the background telling him what Miller was gonna do. Maybe Rosholt does well in the gym but throws it all out when he gets in the cage.
