Ryan Bader (206) vs. Carmelo Marrero (205)
Rafael dos Anjos (156) vs. Tyson Griffin (156)
Junie Browning (156) vs. Cole Miller (156)
Jeremy Stephens (158) vs. Gleison Tibau (156.5)
Ricardo Almeida (185.5) vs. Matt Horwich (185)

Nissen Osterneck (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)
Rob Kimmons (185) vs. Joe Vedepo (184)
Tim McKenzie (184.5) vs. Aaron Simpson (186)

While both Jeremy Stephens and Gleison Tibau came in over the 156-pound limit, neither fighter weighed in without their fight shorts, and both hit the scale just once. The bout will apparently be contested at a catchweight of 158 pounds.

Although still listed on the UFC's official website as a scheduled bout, neither competitor in the Ryan Jensen vs. Steve Steinbeiss bout weighed in during the proceedings. MMAjunkie.com will have an update on the situation as soon as it becomes available.

HT: MMA Junkie

Today's weigh-ins were open to the public but didn't stream live anywhere online. UFC.com should have a video package up within a few hours.

UPDATE from UFC.com:

The middleweight bout between Ryan Jensen and Steve Steinbeiss is on hold at the moment, pending resolution of an administrative issue. Both fighters weighed in at 186 pounds.

UPDATE #2 from Steve Cofield:

Ryan Jensen was looking for his first win in the UFC but a positive test for the Attention Deficit Disorder drug Adderall forced his fight against Steve Steinbeiss to be canceled.

Doing the ref project for Fagan, I noticed that the old cards had 9 fights mostly. Some had 7. This card and recent cards have up to 12. That is huge and a great trend.

i'd love to see that result in...

some webstreaming of undercard fights. I’ve always said this but I think that the UFC would make a big profit off of charging $5 to watch a bonus hour of undercard fights prior to PPV’s/Spike shows going live. I mean…they’ve already got the fights being taped, just stream them for a little bonus cash.

They can’t show it before the PPV, they use those fights to fill in if some fights go short. They don’t want to bore people who pay for the ppv, unless its movie ads. They have been getting a lot of extra fights in on the show and throwing a free one up of UFC.com. They are working on the model I think. They will get it right, they usually do.

They seem to have discontinued the free FotN streaming on UFC.com, or maybe it’s just on a show-by-show basis.

I can see that

but at the same time…I still think it could be done. Maybe I’m just a guy who wants guaranteed fights rather than just “if they have time”…possibly at the expense of having to sit through them again during the actual broadcast.

I feel the same way. I say tack them onto the end. Its not like things come on at the end of a PPV. a blank screen and annoying music.

Stephens AND Tibau were over? Tibau should be able to get there, but Stephens has 2 lbs to go. Could be tough.

by Tim Burke on Mar 31, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

It’s at 158 now. They didn’t even ditch the shorts or weigh in a 2nd time. Totally strange weigh-in today.

And what’s the deal with Jensen/Steinbeiss?

by Tim Burke on Mar 31, 2009 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

No idea.

It was scheduled to be the 2nd or 3rd bout weighed in, but kept getting bumped. Now Junkie has it asterisked, but no info.

… money on Jensen is a phrase that should rarely ever be uttered, unless it’s a bet on who can tap the quickest.

Seriously — no idea about Steinbeiss, and maybe Jensen actually has a shot here, but that dude has not fared very well in his last few bouts.

Frickin’ weird weigh in…

by AJB on Mar 31, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Shouldn’t tibau be competing at 170? He would be big even for 170 and I think he would better be able to use his BJJ at that level. He’s way too big for 155.

by Bigperm on Mar 31, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

He who can cut, shall do so. He might be more agile at 170, but size matters. Especially at 155.

by Tim Burke on Mar 31, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He weighed in a half a pound over 156. Why should he fight at 170?

ha, I’m just saying. 40 lbs is a big cut and can’t be too healthy longterm.

by Bigperm on Mar 31, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Cutting is not healthy long term, but fighters do it much less often then say a college wrestler who might cut twice a week and doesn’t have a healthy walking around weight because they stay low all season.

by szucconi on Mar 31, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Tibau does it maybe 3 or 4 times in a year, and each time he’s got weeks to prep and plan for it. If he’s doing it intelligently – which he must be to shed that much weight and not be a walking corpse during the fight – it should hurt him.

"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."

by AJB on Mar 31, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He started out at 170 and moved down after the Diaz fight. He’s an absolute hulk at 155, so if he can make it, he should stay there.

And in this case, at 156.5, you have to figure that he could have easily made it, but didn’t want to go through the effort given that there’s no way Stephenson was going to make it to 156.

if he has ADD all he would have had to do is turn over proper paperwork saying that he is on medication for it and it’d have likely slid with no problem. So something tells me he failed to turn over the paperwork.

Didn’t a similar failure-to-disclose situation force Tim Credeur to drop out of his fight with Cale Yarbrough at their TUF seaso finale?

I seem to remember the medication in that situation being Adderall or something similar as well.

by Scott Haber on Mar 31, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep.

And here’s a quote from Keith Kizer from that time:

"[Adderall] acts as a cardio-vascular restrictor and that’s the main reason it’s banned because it can cause athletes to have a cardiac episode with the stress they’re under when they’re in an athletic competition. Secondly, it can have a performance-enhancing effect as well."

The cardio-vascular restrictor is reason enough...

don’t need someone having a heart attack mid fight in the biggest promotion in the world because they let him slide by on meds

This is total horseshit

I’ve been taking Adderall for YEARS and while I’m no professional MMA fighter, I work out pretty fucking hard. One can say I’m sort of outlier, but I don’t fit the profile. Most importantly, not one doctor I’ve ever visited or used to administer medication has ever told me their was any sort of medical risk associated with physical exertion while taking Adderall and this was even during the height of my training. They did encourage you to be properly hydrated and weight cutting close to a fight can be a sketchy issue, but the decision to end a fight should be made on medical science that gives doctors pause in terms of the ability of a fighter to withstand the rigors of unarmed combat. Without proper cause, they’re just hamstringing efforts.

Any sort of drug is going to have some kind of effect a small selection of the population, but the idea that Adderall poses enough of a risk to cancel a bout has never been corroborated by anyone in the medical field I’ve ever consulted. Ever.

I've heard a lot...

of stuff in regards to heart attacks/issues by people on Adderall…but I’m hardly an expert.

by Brent Brookhouse on Mar 31, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve “heard” a lot of awful things, too, but they certainly don’t match my experience. And when probed for answers, none of my doctors have ever seemed concerned about its propensity to give me or most others heart problems. In some “extreme” cases, it’s caused heart attacks, but how significant a portion of the Adderall-using community does that represent? From what I can gather, the medical community is at worst somewhat divided on the use and health risks associated with Adderall. If there is an increased risk for this for MMA fights, ok, but let’s at least get the commission to present to us some data and opinion to substantiate the move.

by Luke Thomas on Mar 31, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, from what I understand Nevada is the only commission that bans use of Adderall. If they’re ahead of the curve on this issue, they should take measures to demonstrate why. We are owed the justification and transparency.

I’ve taken a slew of drugs du jour*, and in the tiny amounts prescribed to people, I sincerely doubt that anyone is in real danger. Now, if he had abnormal levels of the drug, that’s a whole other issue, but if he takes a tiny little pill once a day, he’s either safe or a statistical abnormality. If there is a serious issue here, NSAC should produce evidence.
