Jeff Monson: 3 Fights in 2 Weeks

                                                      Monson_20cage_20wars_202-thumb-300x346_medium

Fresh off a controversial decision victory over Roy Nelson at Roy Jones Jr.'s hybrid "March Badness" event on 3/21, former UFC heavyweight and talented grappler Jeff Monson stepped into the cage again just eight days later.  The
Mirror's MMA blog reports than Monson submitted Lithuanian Sergej Maslobojev on Sunday at Cage Wars Championship: Decade in Belfast, Northern Ireland:

Unsurprisingly, Monson's wrestling was the key to his victory, just as it had been against Nelson. After Maslobojev surprisingly stuffed his initial takedown, Monson rolled to be in prime position for the remainder of the fight. A Kimura almost won Monson the fight at the end of the first, but an Anaconda Choke finally sealed it at 2:30 of the second round.

"The Snowman" will not let his 5-ounce gloves stay idle for long, as he returns to action just a week after the Belfast fight and two weeks after the Nelson fight, when he faces the ultra-tough Sergei Kharitonov at Dream 8 this coming Sunday.

Since voluntarily requesting a release from his UFC contract following a loss to Tim Sylvia in a heavyweight title fight in November of 2006, Monson has gone 6-2 in various promotions, with his only losses coming against Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo, and with wins over aging legends like Mark Kerr and Ricco Rodriguez.

Considering he’s facing a 10 year jail term pretty soon, it’s not very surprising..

Umm

Considering he hasn’t even gone to trial, let alone been sentenced, I don’t think Monson’s worrying about trading his fight shorts for prison coveralls anytime soon.

10 years is the maximum sentence the judge can give him, if Monson pleads not guilty and if he’s convicted at trial. That’s a lot of ifs.

Trust me, when you are out on bond for an offense like that you aren’t sweating it at all. I am 100% sure that Monson believes that he isn’t going to prison. At worst, he might be sweating probation.

If he takes a plea, I’m sure the worst he will get it probation, which, seeing as how he’s fighting all over the world already, won’t make any difference to him.

But honestly, I would bet anything on that shit being so far from Monson’s mind.

Thanks for this; I’m a big fan of Monson and I’m glad to see him getting work. I know the paydays from these smaller shows are not the greatest, but I worry that he’s fighting too often. A body like his – massive muscle, built very stocky and heavy – doesn’t usually recover the fastest, but who knows? Monson may just be a freak that way.

Monson is a beast...

but Sergei’s still gonna box him up. I think Sergei scores a late 1’st round (T)KO.

I love Monson, and I can see him grinding out a decision depending on the Kharitonov that shows up. If Sergei is focused, though, he’s going to shitkick Monson.

Very true. An in shape, serious Sergei has the perfect skill set to whip the tar out of Monson, but if he’s lazy and fat, I could definitely see some vintage Monson LnP going on.

Honestly, though- I think Sergei’s been taking it more seriously lately, and he hasn’t looked half bad.

Anyone know

what kind of dollars he earned for his first 2 wins and his show amount for Dream 8?

by Riney on Mar 31, 2009 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

He made 25k to show, 10k for the win at March badness. No idea about the Ireland fight or Dream.
