Tell ESPN That We Want Representation: A Call To Action
In the midst of merely the latest in a string of 200+ comment decimations of WAMMA to grace Bloody Elbow's front page, Brent Brookhouse humbly submitted a proposal:
I vote...
that everyone write ESPN and say that I should be on as a guest the next time Miletich is on presenting their rankings for a friendly debate.
I was then drafted by Rundownloser to get the word out.
Despite Brent's efforts to give WAMMA the benefit of the doubt, indicating that Robbie Lawler v. Matt Lindland would be considered a title fight led to this article. I've had my criticisms of WAMMA, as well:
…notwithstanding your attempt to cover yourself which was woefully insufficient.
Aside from Matt said IN THE ARTICLE that it was SATIRE???
On a personal note, I have always taken ample time to answer any of your emails and find your article harmful and just plain spiteful, to be frank.
That sounds like someone at a diner ordering a full plate of ‘who gives a shit?’.
He could’ve easily registered, posted himself and squared what Pat said with WAMMA’S rankings and policies. But because that’s fucking impossible, he decides to leap to libel (which would never, ever, ever be held up in an American court) and order around a fan whose only crime was to read what people said and care.
Frankly, according to the first Amendment, I can write this:
My sources say Michael B Lynch is a crossdresser – a serious allegation if backed up by subsequent events.
How about a refresher course in not being an asshole?
Also.
Since MMA Live is a web show (and presumably the venue at which such a discussion would take place), I believe this is the correct place to submit our request to have Brent appear opposite Pat Miletich for a friendly debate. If you'd like to submit your own letter, by all means, but I have the one I wrote here if you'd like to copy and paste:
Hello. As an MMA fan, I'm worried that fans attempting to get into the sport are often thrown off by the many organizations in the sport. This problem in recruiting new fans to the sport makes objective, sensible, accurate ratings of all fighters (regardless of affiliation) all the more important. I am concerned that ESPN's recent decision to adopt the World Association of Mixed Martial Art's ranking system will skew a large audience's perception of the true lay of the land in MMA.
Bloodyelbow.com, a member of the SBNation network, recently partnered up with USA Today to print their comprehensive 'Meta-Rankings.' These rankings include WAMMA and a number of more experienced, thorough and reputable rankings, and use a methodology to glean an overall picture of rankings throughout the community. As Bloodyelbow.com has no vote in the rankings (nor any fiscal motivation to manipulate them, unlike WAMMA), I consider their approach to be much less vulnerable to corruption or inaccuracy.
Brent Brookhouse, contributing editor to the site, recently offered to appear on MMA Live for a friendly debate with a WAMMA representative, and I am writing to support that idea.
If WAMMA is truly distraught about what it perceives to be unfair and biased treatment from BE (and, given Jonathan Snowden's noble if Quixotic defense in the comments sections, it seems they are), then they should welcome the opportunity to answer Brent's concerns in a forum they control. By offering to debate on ESPN, and not the pages of USA Today, Brent has shown a willingness to engage this topic regardless of the medium and eliminate any sense of perceived bias from the beginning.
Seeing to it that Brent is given a forum and this issue is aired will not only absolve ESPN of any charges of bias, it will educate fans even more about the sport that you and I both hope to grow. I hope you will strongly consider it.
Sincerely,
I can't think of anyone else that will ask WAMMA the questions we want answered. Get behind this, gang.

we should be clear
that Snowden is just a contributor to their rankings committee not a representative of WAMMA.

i just sent in mine.. If they get flooded by messages to let this happen, maybe they'd do it..
plus they’d surely have more viewers and would definitely have better ratings. so it would be a logical thing to do for espn also..

Rec for the idea
But ESPN are notorious for ignoring pleas such as this. I think it’s sort of a company rule of their’s, like only hiring the most incompetent retired NFL players as analysts.

Just ESPN?
Like they are also the only network to hire Tits Maggie as the NFL sideline reporter too.
It's their great contribution to sports...
I’m not listening to the sideline reporters anyway. At least give me something to look at

NFL Network has HOFers on its network, and people that actually know about the game. Smart players like Marshall Faulk, or they bring out Deacon Jones for how it used to be. Deion Sanders, Rod Woodson, Warren Sapp, Terrell Davis, also have the best guys from CBS, FOX and NBC on the network all the time also, Simms, Collinsworth, etc. Mixed in with good hosts who don’t act like they’re former NFL players, a million former HOF players who are on as guest analysts all the time, and by far the best information guy(s) with Adam Schefter, and access to every specific team reporter, etc…
Look at the crap ESPN has, and credentials get alot worse if you take out Steve Young and Emmitt Smith who work for ESPN about 20 days each a year, each appearance a combined less than 5-10 minutes…so ESPN has Merrill Hoge, Mark Schlereth, Darren Woodson, Eric Allen, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Tim Hasselbeck, Tom Jackson and hosts who act like they know more about the NFL than players who actually played the game, and by far the worst information guy in NFL history in Mortenson, who backstabs players to get his only legit info, and the other 75% of the time just makes up stories, like saying Eli Manning will be out for a month and Adam Schefter comes on NFL Network a minute later and says “some people are reporting Eli is out a month and I’m here to say he is questionable JUST for the next game but plans to play” (eli didn’t miss a game)…
ESPN is crap, and thats just the NFL, its just as bad with baseball and basketball, they get crap former players and have information guys who make up stories and are always wrong…
oh to add NFL Network’s draft guy, Mike Mayock, actually played the game, studies tape and his mock draft as well as his outlook on players, (saying its a good or bad pick) is usually right on, perfect at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine also….ESPN has Mel Kiper Jr and Todd McShay, if you actually follow what they say then you know how bad they are at what they do…even though Kiper is a legend, he was wrong when he started the job and he’s still wrong today, just used to be the ONLY guy…
this post has nothing to do with anything, I was just watching NFL Live on one TV and NFL Network on the other and decided to compare since I just read a comment mentioned ESPN…
Oh for sure...
I just never really have cared about sideline reporters. That’s all I was saying. ESPN does have Jaws though….he’s great at explaining film/technique

Emmitt Smith???
You may have some technical errors over there. Smith is a horrible analyst and got taken off the air for this coming season. Carter is money and Steve Smith is ok. Hoge has brain damage and I can’t stand Jaworski.

besides his Super Bowl 25 game against the Giants…for the most part I remember his disappearing or fumbling non stop in the big games…
but ya, he was good, the Bills were awesome in Tecmo Super Bowl, they were one of 3 “illegal” teams to use on my block…(Giants, Niners)
should have clarified…Tecmo Super Bowl for SNES…
“updated rosters” version…
though Tecmo Super Bowl for NES is my favorite all time, most of my friends had the SNES version and of course I had it as well so that is what we usually played…
I have every Tecmo Bowl ever, from original where the Seahawks had pink uniforms, to the 3rd Tecmo Bowl on SNES where they had crazy spin moves and jumps and the Panthers and Jags were in the game. Got the one for Playstation but wasn’t the same…still play Tecmo Super Bowl for both NES and SNES from time to time though, best two versions, SNES doesn’t have the “bugs” but NES has the better rosters imo…

I think I was fairly clear that I didn’t represent WAMMA.
This:
“If WAMMA is truly distraught about what it perceives to be unfair and biased treatment from BE (and, given Jonathan Snowden’s noble if Quixotic defense in the comments sections, it seems they are)”
gives the opposite impression. I have no idea if WAMMA officials are even aware of your continued attacks on the group. Using my willingness to discuss the issue with you as evidence they do is unprofessional and misleading.
Well, you are a WAMMA official. You came here to defend WAMMA’s practices. Thus, we know of at least one WAMMA official that is aware of (and concerned about) our perception of WAMMA.
I don’t know if other WAMMA officials are aware, but getting them aware is kind of the goal.

It’s not. I read Nate’s article and responded in the comments. That doesn’t mean WAMMA is distraught about the attention. I have no idea if they are even aware of it. Nor was I distraught. I thought we were having a calm and dispassionate discussion?
I termed your defense ‘noble’ – that seems fairly calm and dispassionate. Are you saying you don’t mind what BE has to say about WAMMA? And if you don’t, then why bother commenting? You can’t say you didn’t care about the article. There’s nothing inaccurate in that post.
by Derek Suboticki on Mar 31, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I am not a WAMMA “official.” I help them determine the fighter rankings. Are all the sites that contribute to the meta-rankings Bloody Elbow “officials?” I don’t make any WAMMA decisions and I don’t have any influence on how they decide what to do with their rankings.
What is their process for that, exactly? Do Pat and the other officials listen to you and the other contributors and then make their own decision? Is it a ballot? Is everyone’s opinion weighted the same, or is it you and several others submitting their own rankings and then whatever comes out the other side is the official WAMMA stance?
by Derek Suboticki on Mar 31, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
That's my understanding as well...
and no…you’re not an official. If I understand it correctly as a member of the ranking committee the extent of your “influence” is that you send in a ranking ballot. Thanks again for engaging in a fun discussion yesterday. Not sure where the disconnect came from that turned you into an “official”
