Bobby Lashley to Fight Former NFL Player at XFC - UPDATED: XFC Denies Report
MMAJunkie.com reports:
"After a lackluster unanimous-decision win over Jason Guida (17-20) at Roy Jones Jr's "March Badness," former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (2-0) has agreed to make his next appearance against former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Marcus Jones.
The potential bout could main event the Florida-based XFC's April 25 event "XFC 8: Regional Conflict" at the Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenneesee."
After checking out Jones' record, the majority of his wins are via TKO. Although not an impressive resume I still think this is another good test for Lashley considering both he and his opponent are still rather green in the sport, Marcus Jones has 6 pro fights under his belt. Good choice on Lashley's part for not jumping aboard the Strikeforce roster so soon.
[UPDATE] by Chris Nelson
Just received this press release from XFC President John Prisco denying the rumor:
“It’s come to our attention that a rumor has started circulating that Bobby Lashley will be fighting Marcus Jones at XFC 8: ‘Regional Conflict’ on Saturday, April 25 – a show featuring the fastest-rising young prospects and top emerging superstars from Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky and North Carolina in contender-versus-contender bouts, airing exclusively nationwide on HDNet. That rumor is false, and no such statement was ever issued by the XFC, Bobby Lashley, or Bobby Lashley’s manager.
“It is true that the XFC and Bobby Lashley have had numerous conversations, and both parties hope to find a way to work together in the very near future. Bobby has publicly stated his interest in fighting for the XFC, and we can confirm that the interest is mutual. We look forward to continuing to grow our relationship.
“The XFC hopes Bobby Lashley – and MMA fans nationwide – enjoy XFC 8 ‘Regional Conflict’ on April 25, as it airs live from the 21 thousand-capacity Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee, exclusively on HDNet. For more information, please visit www.mmaxfc.com.”

Really? I figured a step up in the competion would be something for Lashley.

I think Jason Guida counts as a step up in competition, for sure. Guida’s a well rounded vet of the sport, and Lashley only fought him because he was a late replacement.
I’d rather see Lashley building himself up, and getting experience, than see him thrown to the wolves. He’s still very new to the sport, and in his situation, he has to deal with taking highly publicized fights without taking on insane competition.
In a few fights, I would like to see him go to a major org (be it Strikeforce, Sengoku/ Dream, etc). For now, I think he’s doing the right thing.

100%. Jason Guida was a HUGE step up in competition. He is no ametuer, he fights. Plain and simple, he has over 30 pro fights and he has expierence.
I personally was hoping for somebody like a Gary Goodridge, a heavyweight with main name.. even though I dont want to compare.. I’d rather see Lashley go the Kimbo Slice route and fight people with established names, even though they are 100% washed up.
I want to see Lashley take on some of these grizzled vets instead of fighting a no named former NFL football player in all honesty. Lashley has huge potential in MMA, I just dont want to see him lose.

I'm a NFL fan
so i know a lot about football players and i don’t think a fake ass WWE wrestler will win against some one who does his job for real.

Umm....
You need to read a book. Lashley is a decorated three time national champion amateur wrestler at Missouri Valley, two time NAIA champion and a former two time Armed Forces wrestling champion— not some hometown pro wrestling product. You show up out of nowhere to champion the NFL. Way to go champ…
