Dave Herman, Eddie Sanchez Among Bellator's Heavyweight Additions
I just received a press release from the Bellator Fighting Championships people announcing their fourth show (which will be in Colorado Springs, CO, on Friday, April 24th) and I have to say that I didn't expect to see some of the names I'm seeing on it. The show will play host to the semi-finals of Bellator's Lightweight Tournament, but also features the debut of the promotion's only non-tournament weightclass with five heavyweight bouts on the undercard. Check the matchups:
Non-Tournament Bouts:
Heavyweight – Dave Herman (13-1) vs. Josh Barnes (5-1)
Heavyweight – Rauol Romero (3-1) vs. Dave Evensen (10-4)
Heavyweight – Eddie Sanchez (11-3) vs. Jay White (4-5)
Heavyweight – Tyler East (pro debut)) vs. Amedio Viola (0-1)
Heavyweight – Joey Beltran (5-2) vs. Sherman Pendergarst (11-12)
130 lbs. – Molly Helsel (7-7) vs. Angela Hayes (1-5)
Special Lightweight World Championship Semi-Final Tournament Match-Up
Based on the outcome of Bellator I, II & III
Things didn't go exactly as expected for Dave Herman - aka "Pee Wee," aka "Blueberry Muffin" - with Sengoku in the wake of the EliteXC fallout (Herman was TKO'd by Choi Mu Bae at WVR's New Years show), but to see him signing on with Bellator when Strikeforce is getting ready to roll is somewhat surprising. Likewise for Eddie Sanchez, a decent fighter who earned a bad rep in the UFC as a boring heavyweight at a time when the division was pretty stagnant. And Sherman Pendergarst... did you know he's had four fights in the year since YAMMA? I sure didn't. But I'm not mad at seeing him here, and all told, I don't think Bellator has done badly at all with selecting their big men. And a little extra dap for bringing in Molly Helsel, whose record doesn't reflect what a fun fighter she is to watch.
Full press release in the extended entry.

How is it that Molly Helsel (7-7) and someone I haven’t heard of with a 1-5 record are getting featured, when fighters like Sarah Kauffman – who demolished Helsel in her last fight – hasn’t fought in over a year, and isn’t signed to fight anyone at the moment?

Sarah Kaufman is fighting for the PFC in April, but in general I think the demise of EXC has a lot to do with the lack of top-level female MMA we’re seeing in the States. Valkyrie has a really nice card coming up in Japan but it’s basically impossible to see over here, even if you know the shady back alleys.

She refuses to admit that she’s fighting for PFC until she’s got a signed contract with an opponent, which hasn’t happened yet. She’s also been picked up by Strikeforce, if I recall correctly, but they haven’t even offered her an opponent yet.

This interview makes it sound like it’s a pretty sure bet for April Cautino at 135 pounds, but I know these things can change. Either way, I can’t wait to see her back in there.

I hope so. I haven’t seen her for about a month, but last time I talked to her, it was still up in the air.

I figured you might have an inside line, but I didn’t want to Canadian profile you.

Ha! Thanks, but the truth is that she is the manager and #2 coach at the gym where I train. We’re not buddies who hang around on weekends, but she’s nice enough to talk to me when I show up early for class. She’s also an absolute gym rat, with a work ethic like no other, and one of the most terrifying fighters around when she’s in a zone, and yet an incredibly kind, nice, giving person off the mat. Anyway, even after I’m not there anymore, I’ll always be a big fan of hers and I just really, really want her to have more opportunities to fight.

I like Pee Wee, but damn is he raw. Sanchez may go down as the only guy Cro Cop ever beats in the UFC.

When Choi Mu Bae takes you out, you need to go back to the drawing board.

And he did!
He’s relocating to Nashville, got a new camp, has gotten serious about cardio (allegedly), started training with a gi, etc.
We shall see…

I'm actually excited about everything Bellator is doing...
and putting together a heavyweight division from scratch is really difficult right now. So props to them for getting some guys that should make for some interesting matches if nothing else. Herman is one of those guys who was never as good as the hype had gotten before the loss to Choi Mu Bae and isn’t as bad as everyone seems to think he is following the loss. He could have a bit of a nice run in a promotion like this while he grows as a fighter.

By the way, I believe “Dave Evensen” on their press release = Dan Evensen, former UFC heavy bag for Kongo and Pat Barry. I never heard about him being released by the UFC, and I know he was injured in the Barry loss, but it may have just flown under the radar. Trying to confirm with Bellator now.

I have always felt that unless you’re one of the major players in MMA, it’s usually best to pretend the HW division doesn’t exist.
Yeah, that’s why I believe they’ve held off showing heavyweights on TUF since TUF 2. The difference between the Top – Middle – Bottom tiers of the heavyweight division are just huge. Meaning once you’ve already signed up the majority of the top and middle tier fighters your left with just fat dudes who have to wear shirts when they fight.
