Image001_medium

The UWC has announced their next event, "UWC 6: Capital Punishment", which will take place April 25th at the George Mason Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA. Go to UWC's website for more.

This card will feature many of the same local, home grown talent as before: UWC bantamweight champion Mike Easton, Jose Villarisco, Kyle Baker, Binky Jones, Ron Stallings, Reshad Woods and more.

In addition, NCAA Division I wrestling champion Phil Davis will be on hand to take on T's KO/Nate Marquardt product Cody Donovan at light heavyweight. Another T's KO product and former NFL player Brendan Schaub will lock horns with David Brytus at heavyweight. Marcus Foran will rematch TUF 6 alum Ritchie Hightower after a controversial ending to their first bout.

And my favorite fights on the card: Jamal Patterson returns to take on Canadian prospect Ryan Jimmo.

Much more of this to come. Hope everyone is able to watch the show, be it online or in person. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.

Full press release after the jump.

UWC – CAPITAL PUNISHMENT TO SHOWCASE DC’S BEST VERSUS REST OF WORLD APRIL 25th AT PATRIOT CENTER

DC’s Mike Easton to Defend UWC Bantamweight Title against Josh Ferguson

FAIRFAX, VA – In just over one year, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters from the nation’s top MMA teams have come to the Washington, D.C. Capital Region to battle top local competitors at Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) shows.  And during this time period, the capital area fighters have more then held their own against the elite schools’ fighters, in fact often ‘punishing’ them in the process.  The organization will promote that fact by showcasing the region’s best fighters at its next event, the aptly titled UWC – Capital Punishment, returning to the George Mason University Patriot Center on Saturday, April 25, 2009.

Leading the local charge will be dynamic bantamweight Mike “The Hulk” Easton (7-1), who captured the first UWC World Championship in front of the region’s largest pro MMA crowd at UWC – Man “O” War last month. He will defend his 135-pound title against another hot, out-of-town prospect, Josh “Taz” Ferguson (6-1), in the evening’s Main Event.

Rising regional stars expected to dole out their own form of ‘Capital Punishment’ on April 25th will be Kris “Savage” McCray (Woodbridge, VA) from Gold Medal Grappling and Easton’s Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts teammates Ron “The Choir Boy” Stallings (Baltimore, MD), Reshad Woods (Manassas, VA) and Jose “The Pistol” Villarisco (Arlington, VA).

Now entrenched as one of MMA’s most promising bantamweights, the charismatic and high-energy Easton, under the tutelage of Master Lloyd Irvin, embodies the spirit of the world’s hottest sport.  From his electrifying ring entrances and charismatic personality to crowd-pleasing performances and respected overall game, the Washington, D.C. native has showcased his versatility by beating his last three opponents utilizing three different styles in the process.

Last April in his UWC debut, he went toe-to-toe with Gerald Lovato and delivered a head-turning, highlight-reel knockout of the New Mexico striker.  In October 2008, he outfoxed the wily John “The Magician” Dodson, among the speediest fighters in the sport, earning a three-round split decision over the Greg Jackson disciple.  And last month, the 25–year old fighter showed the patience and poise of a cagey veteran before submitting H.I.T. squad wrestler Justin Robbins to capture the UWC crown.

Standing in Easton’s way is the skilled submission specialist Ferguson fighting out of Louisville, KY’s Highlander Fight Team, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy run by noted black belt Mike Yanez.  An accomplished fighter himself, Yanez trained under World Jiu-Jitsu Champion Pablo Popovitch.

All six of Ferguson’s professional victories have ended with either an armbar or rear naked choke hold.  He is on a three-bout winning streak, including a first-round submission over Stonnie Dennis last November.

UWC shows have become a staple of the Washington, D.C. sports culture, attracting mainstream celebrities like Alex Ovechkin, Donald Brashear, Mike Green and Nicklas Backstrom from the Washington Capitals, Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, and ESPN’s Tony Reali, among many others.  Thousands of fans from across the region have packed the Patriot Center to witness electrifying world-class MMA combat in virtually every weight division.

Guiding one of the top organizations on the East Coast, UWC CEO S. Marcello Foran remains committed to building upon his goal for the company: finding and developing the great MMA champions of tomorrow.  Fans can expect the same level of explosive cage fights, first-class production and crowd-pleasing environment as the UWC continues to provide the national capital region with the highest level of competition seen on the east coast.

Good to see a couple of Denver guys!

Schaub is a beast, but I think as he moves up in competition, he may need to drop to LHW.

Cody has skills, but he has been inconsistent, imo. He definitely has the potential to put on a very exciting fight.

Best of luck to those guys!

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

Why would you root for guys just because they're from Denver?

Kind of silly. Minneapolis, on the other hand… :)

Is this streamed free or will I have to dust of my wallet?

Sherdog is streaming again, thankfully. (Although it’ll be blacked out for anyone within 100 miles of the Patriot Center.)

100mi Blackout Radius

The blackout stinks for me, because I will be at my Grandfather’s 80th birthday party that day and unable to attend the show.

Proof that Sherdog hates the the elderly and veterans!

I heard a rumour that Sherdog eats babies.

Awesome, thanks!

I will just turn down the volume! Just kidding Luke!

Cody Donovan

I love Cody Donovan because with his beard he looks just like Dustin Hazelett.

He and Luke could fight and we could bill it as Hazelett v. Matt Brown.

I really hope the winner of Donovan and Davis fights Patterson (presuming he wins) for the UWC Light Heavyweight title (which I am making up).

Luke

Are you sure Kyle Baker is fighting at UWC 6, because he’s scheduled to fight Drew Fickett at CageFest Xtreme All In at Norfolk that same night.

Yeah, I just found this out, too. I’ll make the change.
