Rankings compiled by Richard.
Despite B.J. Penn's best efforts to blow up the division, first in the Octagon and then in front of the NSAC, #1 Georges St. Pierre moves forward at the top of the toughest division in MMA. He'll next defend his title against #2 Thiago Alves at the gala UFC 100 on July 11. If GSP puts a convincing beatdown on Alves, the talk of his moving to middleweight will only increase.
#3 Jon Fitch will return on that same card, looking to avenge his teammate #7 Josh Koscheck's KO loss to then unranked, now #12 Paulo Thiago. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end, Joe Silva and Dana White have certainly not brought Thiago along slowly. On the other hand if he beats Fitch, Paulo will be a rising star in the division.
#4 Jake Shields is signed to fight #6 middleweight Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce's May show. It's a big improvement from the post-EliteXC limbo that he was in for several months. I'd prefer to see Shields in the UFC facing the best welterweights in the world, but I think being the biggest fish in the smaller pond is probably a better career path for him at this point.
#5 Carlos Condit will be making his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann at Fight Night 18 on April 1. Kampmann is still ranked #25 as a middleweight after moving down in divisions a few months back. This will be a good test for both fighters and should put the winner on the fast track to contention.
#6 Matt Hughes and #10 Matt Serra will finally have their grudge match at UFC 98. I find it hard to imagine any scenario where either former champion returns to relevancy in the division, but both should continue to get fairly high profile fights for some time to come. #7 Josh Koscheck will face the tough Chris Wilson on that same card.
Only time will tell what becomes of #8 Karo Parisyan after his suspension by the NSAC for pain pills at UFC 94. Sadly, the man who brought high flying throws to MMA and proved that judo techniques could be effective in the Octagon is now likely to wind up remembered as a warning parable for young fighters. Karo chronically under-trained, didn't rehab serious injuries and now appears to have wasted as much potential as any fighter in the sport. I sincerely hope he uses his enforced time off well to heal up, train and refocus himself. Come back Karo!
#9 Mike Swick will face an impressive Ben Saunders at UFC 99 in Germany on June 13. I would love too see the winner of this one get the winner of Condit/Kampmann en route to a title shot in early 2010.
Based on the premise that all MMA rankings are subjective but that it’s still useful and informative to know who the online MMA community as a whole ranks as the best fighters in MMA, we collect and average the rankings of the top MMA websites to produce our consensus rankings.
We compile the top MMA rankings from each of our sources and award 25 points for a first place ranking, 16 for a 10th place ranking, 1 for a 25th place ranking. A formula is used to "normalize" the data so all fighters are awarded points from those lists that do not include a full 25 fighters. This formula ensures that each ranking site awards the same number of total points regardless of how many fighters they choose to rank. Each fighter’s total is divided by the number of possible points to determine their standing in the Consensus Rankings.

Jumpin Paulo Thiago!
Dudes are hype on this guy. 12th, for real? I like his upside, but that’s wild..

TKO a top four guy and shoot to 12th. Seems reasonable.

Except the guys he KO’d weren’t top four.

I'm not so sure of that
its impossible to reconstruct the metas for 2006 but Arona and Lil Nog were perennial top contenders for most of the decade.

Sokoudjou looked like a freakin monster when he absolutely walked through lil nog and Arona. Paulo Thiago looked like he was going to be the one to get knocked out before Kos got sloppy and got caught. I don’t like the term lucky punch but I bet that wouldn’t happen 99 times out of 100.
I dislike Matt Hughes.

True, which is one of those quirks with rankings. No one could have predicted that he would fall just as quickly. I just don’t like when a fighter jumps so high in the rankings based on one or two performances. Randy beat Sylvia, so he launched into the Top 10, then Lesner beat Randy and is #6 with just 4 fights. Serra as #1 WW just for beating GSP after not competing for a year? I get it, but I don’t like it. Once someone cares about my opinion, I’ll let ’em have it.

Well, rankings aren’t necessarily predictive. Hence Robbie Lawler’s ranking. ;-)

Right. Most rankings are intended to be descriptive rather than predictive. So, if you want to complain about them keep that in mind.

I was a little surprised at first when I saw Paulo’s ranking but like Richard said that usually happens, after Fitch gets done with him he will be properly ranked. If he beats Fitch though I wonder if people will put him in the top 5.

My only problem with it is my love for Hazelett, but Paulo beat the guy that beat him.

So would I
Because then he will have proven it wasn’t an anomaly. And don’t get me wrong; I like the guy (in fact, I was the only person I can remember on BE that said don’t be shocked if he beats Kos and that he’s being sold short based on simply being unknown domestically). But it’s not just his number 12 ranking, it’s the ranking among the sites that have him ranked. I totally disagree that based on one fight he’s the sixth best 170 pounder in the world (Sherdog). Or 12th cumulatively. That’s akin to the beginning of an NFL season (let’s say this coming season) where, perhaps, the Rams beat the Giants week one. Is it possible that the Rams are going to be good? Sure. But I’d wane on the side of cautious optimism, not immediate validation. They aren’t going to be ranked 12th in my Power Rankings on account of that one victory, but subsequently beating a Baltimore in week two would change my tune.

Think of it more like they’re ranked 12th after getting off to a 4-0 start against quality competition.

Why?
It’s a sample of one, not four.

Fighters fight a lot less than team sports play.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Obviously
That doesn’t change the size of the sample. Football teams play way less than Baseball teams, that’s why I used Football as an example. One game is still one game, no matter who’s playing. Anyone can win or lose once.

Look
He could be top ten, top five, possibly top three or maybe even head honcho, when he has the chance to prove it. I just (personally, mind you) don’t see how he can be any of those, or top 12, without more to go on. Has a lot to do with feeling that some of the guys that have been fighting top competition for years should receive higher rankings. And yes, I understand how this works. These are my thoughts on where I’d place him..

Beating two top 5 WW should put you in the top five. Or somewhere close.

Guys like Swick, Davis and Lytle seem to be climbing the rankings mostly by fighting each other, kind of like Arlovski and Sylvia a few years ago. I mean, I can’t imagine that many of these sites put a lot of worth in knocking out guys like Jonathan Goulet and Jess Liadun.
Dong Hyun Kim’s absence is a bit curious considering how he got the better of the #8 guy in his last fight. I trust he will catapult to #9 when he tucks Goulet in.
by smoogy on Mar 25, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Swick’s ranking is attributable to his being 8-1 in the UFC with his only loss being to the #2 middleweight by decision. Davis has won 13 of his last 14 fights. I won’t defend people ranking Lytle in their top 25.

I don't understand
Hughes and Serra have gone almost two years without winning a fight. Why should they be in the top ten?
by Zack Gobie on Mar 26, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
despite the fact the Serra was “injured” for most of a year, neither him nor Hughes belongs on the top 10. Huges lost his last two fights convincingly, and what can be said about the Serra ass whoppin that hasn’t been said already, I’d almost go as far as saying neither one belongs in the top 20, but…

He lost to the #1 and #2 welterweights. That shouldn’t disqualify you from the top ten.

Because those that are creating the rankings have two schools of thought
Who could they beat and who have they.

I honestly think
there is just a huge amount of inertia in the rankings. People tend to look at the rankings they’ve done before and the rankings other sites are doing and make minor adjustments. Hughes was at the top not all that long ago and Serra shot up to the top for his artificially extended title reign.

Because they were rightfully in the Top 10 before, and they’ve only lost to GSP and Alves (Hughes lost to both). Who else is supposed to be in there over them? If beating GSP or Alves is a criterion needed, there’s not going to be much of a Top 10.
I’d argue that quite a few of the Top 10 have dropped due to losing to GSP or Alves, and guys have jumped over these fighters not because of who they’ve beaten, but just due to the aforementioned losing to the Top 2.

Larson=UFC not WEC.

![Brock Larson reflects on his upset loss to Mike Pierce in an interview with MMA Junkie:
"I don't think the judges made the wrong call. They had to award him the win because the only thing that went on in the whole fight was takedowns, and he got them. I clearly lost the fight. Hats off to Pierce, but he has some issues to work on himself."
In the locker room after the fight, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva told Larson's manager, Monte Cox, "Don't worry about Brock. He's a fighter. We don't know what we're going to do with this other [expletive]. I don't know if I can watch another 15 minutes of that [expletive].".
"That was good to hear coming off a loss," Larson said. "In a weird way, that loss helps me, and it would have helped Pierce if he tried to be aggressive. Win, lose or draw, at least he's competing. People won't want to watch that stuff.
"I've always taken pride in going after and trying to finish my fights, and I get the upper hand always going after it and being aggressive. Pierce didn't have that attitude. He just wanted to eke out the win and get the [win].
"The W is important, but at the same time it's the entertainment business. People pay to watch, and they don't want to watch two guys hug belly buttons. Clay Guida, he makes more money on friggin' 'Fight of the Night' bonuses than he does on his fight wins."
"People look at film and say, 'This guy beat Brock? That's all he had to do,'" Larson said. "I have to get the Band-Aids out, cover that owie and not have to worry about that being a problem."](http://cdn1.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/84043/md97y25v01_small.jpg)
