Speculation on Gina Carano

39012_gina-carano_l4_mediumIn watching the interview where Carano talks about Strikeforce and Cyborg, I couldn't help but notice that she seemed a bit burned out in regards to MMA. There's several things from this interview that have me concerned.

First off, she was most excited at the beginning of the interview talking about hanging out with the Make-A-Wish kids, which is a great thing. But when asked where has she been, she talks about traveling, "detoxing", and training "here and there".

What I'm most concerned about is how's she handling her training regime if she's wanting her next fight to be against Cristina "Cyborg" Santos. Cyborg is no joke of a competitor, and this fight is getting a lot of tension built up under it in anticipation for it to happen. It's becoming quite "surreal". Hopefully it's not as mythic as the Fedor-Coutue fight. But, a Carano walking in 4.5 lbs overweight again just would not fly.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

To continue, throughout the video she talks about how she has not been in the gym much lately and has been taking sometime away from it. She's a bit notorious for not prepping enough for fights. Her last few for CBS she looked okay, and that was good enough to get the wins, but she didn't look that great as a fighter. She even stated that she was sloppy in one of them and should have trained more. I am glad to hear though that her next move is a fight, and she wants that fight to be with Cyborg. But she just sounded completely burned out from training and competing sans the Cyborg fight.

Regrettably, it wouldn't surprise me if she retired after that fight. If that's the case, what would that mean for female mma? Carano has the most going for her as far as getting female mma into Zuffa cards. She is a great fighter, has the sex appeal, and has proven to draw some pretty big numbers consistently. Women's fights may never make it on to UFC cards, but with other organizations with female cards continuing to disappear, women's MMA needs a place that will hold some consistency. If for nothing else, to have a home and a set of standardized weight classes. I think that the WEC could provide this and then the more hardcore MMA fans would see these on VS and it could infiltrate from there.

IF Carano were to retire, what would happen with the promotions of female mma since most of them are focused through her? Who would be the next Carano per se? Kim Couture has a big name, but she's too new to the fight scene to take such a burden. Cyborg is a fantastic fighter, and she's a great candidate, but she looks a bit more like a fighter and isn't quite as pretty as Carano or Couture. Megumi Fuji is AWESOME, but would she move from Japan? Also, her name isn't as well known to the non-hardcore fans.

Maybe this isn't something to be too concerned about just yet, and I sincerely hope it's not. But I would really like to see female MMA continue to grow and can a steady outlet.

Below are a few more issues from the video worth mentioning but not what I had wanted to focus on.

What is/was she detoxing from? It seems as if she's about to say why but quickly states she doesn't have to always be in the limelight. Agreed, she needs time to herself. So is she simply detoxing from the poisons of the media? Also, what kind of detox is "interesting and fun"? Hopefully she stays clean from whatever it was? Please no more Carina Damm steroid-esque runs.

For somebody who states that she doesn't really like all of the attention she gets and some of the pressures for being the head of female MMA, I find it odd she would do a photoshoot for MAXIM. Granted, she is very attractive and nobody minds looking at her whatsoever, but if you don't want attention sensual photoshopped pics aren't going to help you out. (but for those so inclined you can check them out here: http://www.cagepotato.com/hot-potato-new-gina-carano-pics-maxim )

Gina Carano

Gina is a Diva, who’s holding out for the best deal possible in MMA.I don’t feel she’s the right women to lead womens mma into the mainstream. I think Gina will use mma too springboard herself into different avenues. At the end of the day she’s just another pretty face actress.

The current storm on the horizon is Christian "Cyborg" Santos. The fearsome striker made her wish to fight Carano known again at Strikeforce’s press conference announcing the upcoming "Shamrock vs. Diaz." Santos is scheduled for the April 11 card against submission specialist Hitomi Akano, and a win could position her for a summer showdown with Carano.

"It’s gonna happen," said Carano of the much-anticipated fight. "Actually, the only person I can think about right now. My focus is on her, and I don’t really want to fight anybody else but her. Let’s do it.

Why make weight?

I don’t understand why people are so concerned about Gina making weight. The only reason there are weight restrictions is to maintain fair fights for titles. Since there are essentially no meaningful women’s titles, the only incentive for her to make arbitrary weight limits is financial. If she’s ok with sacrificing money to come in overweight, or if her opponents agree to catch weights all the time, then there is no need for her to over cut.

because its crap for the sport for her to never make weight. women’s mma has a hard enough time with out having a consistent organization leading it for them and without even really having unified weight classes it makes it even harder to figure out who is a good fighter and who isn’t. plus its bullshit when one person busts ass to make weight and the other would rather take the financial cut. cutting weight can severely effect your game. why agree to a weight you know you can’t make?

“why agree to a weight you know you can’t make?”

Because like you said, weight cutting is hard, and in Gina’s case, underling MMA promotions need her more than she needs them. I really doubt she intentionally misses weight, but at the same time, there’s just not much of an incentive for her make weight. It has no title implications, and no fighter is going to refuse to fight her because of that because of what it could do for their careers to beat Gina.

Right now Gina Carano is bigger than the sport of womens’ MMA. She’s like ARod in baseball. He can do whatever he wants, including steroids, and he’ll still make the most money, play for the yankees, win MVP’s and have millions of fans. The only thing she could do to hurt women’s MMA right now, is not fighting, because if she isnt fighting, people aren’t watching. A couple pounds has nothing to do with ratings or PPV buys.

She’s not using the word “detox” to describe a situation where she’s been drinking, juicing, and doing blow for the past six months and is now slowly flushing all that out. She’s using it in a casual way to basically mean “relax.”

Over the past few years the girl has been constantly training for fights while doing interviews and photo shoots non-stop, in addition to her extra curricular activities like American Gladiators and that video game she was in. That’s all on top of maintaining her status as a hot chick. Now, ever since Pro Elite has folded, she’s been able to have some down time to herself. That’s what she means by “detox.”

i hope thats all it means. but ya can never tell. just weird wording.

by snet tim on Mar 23, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t use the term “detoxing” so many times if I were her since she’s involved in a sport where illegal substances have a very real place. I like Gina. She’s easy to like and is an awesome fighter, but I just fail to see her schedule as particularly grueling. She fought twice last year and twice the year before. Of course, Gina has done a lot of publicity stuff and American Gladiators (totally her choice). I believe most female fighters have to hold down jobs since they can’t make a living off of MMA. She did an interview sometime after the Evinger fight where she said much of the same stuff about taking time by herself. My take is that she obviously wants the attention to an extent, but that she’s not one of these people who reviles in it. That’s why she backs away. I don’t think it’s due to a grueling schedule.
