I’m sure BJ was very receptive to that sentiment. “Oh, thanks, Boss…I just feel like I got fucked at work, and you aren’t being very supportive, but yeah, I’ll get on training right away, Boss, yes Master, yes, thank you, Mastah…mmhmm…mmhmm…”

Or he could’ve been like, “Yeah Dana? Fuck you. I’m off to DREAM to fight the real Lightweight King, Shinya Aoki.”

by AnonymousA on Mar 22, 2009 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

First of all, I really don’t give a fuck how receptive BJ is to that sentiment. Dana piled onto GSP’s corner as hard as anyone in the aftermath of that fight, before the complaint was even filed, and BJ asked for outrageous sanctions and punishments that had no chance of ever being implemented.

And it would be more like ‘Fuck you, elbows or not I’m going to stomp a mudhole in Aoki.’

Yeah, if BJ lost to Aoki I could see him doing a bunch of whining and crying over the Aoki pants. lol

Oi, I give you props on you graphic design, so give me props on my occasional Aoki/Penn troll job.

Your troll jobs aren’t natural enough. You need to find a happy medium in which you say outrageous things but don’t actually sound like you’re attempting to troll.

I think it’s an effective style. The responses are always prompt and reactionary, so it works.

But seriously, I don’t think I’d be that happy with Dana White if I were BJ Penn. I’m one of his top draws, and he’s going to throw me under the bus? It’s basically like White is picking GPS over Penn, and I’m sure Penn isn’t too happy about that.

by AnonymousA on Mar 22, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Dana isn’t throwing BJ under the bus. It’s just that he believes GSP didn’t intend to cheat, and really, enough is enough. He allowed BJ his time to take it to the commission, which just proved what we all knew: he has no footing on this. In the end, Dana’s got a business to run.

by pud333 on Mar 23, 2009 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

BJ has got what he wanted from the UFC pretty much anytime he ask, heck he got the GSP fight even though it screwed up the chain of title defenses in both divisions. At this point telling a guy to get on with his training isn’t throwing him under a bus it’s an intervention to save a guy from career threatening obsession with the past. The fight is over, the court case it over now it is time to move on with careers not to whine about what could of been. Life sucks and occasionally you get screwed over by things you can’t control but if you obsess over those things too long you are just hurting yourself.

Well said

BJ was looking like he was starting to hurt himself by getting carried away and losing his focus. Dana, obviously wants him to be successful as his fighter, but too as his friend (cue delicate piano music).

AnonymousA is mistaken

A) BJ isn’t going to DREAM now or any time soon. BJ is under contract with the UFC as their LW champion. But…didn’t he come out successful the last time he tried to fight the UFC?

B) All this crap from BJ is bullshit. This is really no different than when Frank Trigg kicked Matt Hughes in the balls in their rematch. He had been accused of using said illegal tactic in fights in the past, and did it without the ref (Yamasaki) looking and the fight wasn’t stopped to let Matt regroup or anything. Matt almost lost the championship on that move because he got dropped almost immediately afterwards and was knocked out until Trigg hit him again when Hughes was on his back and woke Hughes up. I’m not a big fan of Hughes (or even much of a little one), but what would we have said if he had lost the title in that fight? Would Hughes have been appealing the result and commencing arbitration? If Hughes tried dragging such a situation out in court, which he would have had every right to, what would it have accomplished? Absolutely nothing because he would have had to have tried to prove intent which he couldn’t do.

This was a fight. Too bad BJ got hurt but this shit is dangerous. The infraction was in-ring. Shit happens in the ring. He knows anything can happen in the ring and the ref is going to take 0.5 seconds to determine if the infraction was intentional or not and he would have to live with that decision. You know you are there to defend yourself and you know things can happen. Grease isn’t an illegal substance and the application of it is not even all that clear in the NSAC rulebook. Of course Nurse applied the vaseline wrong, but the real question, which everyone wants to dismiss, is how did this impact the fight? No one in their right mind believes BJ would have performed better without any grease in the cage.

BJ is crying that he wasn’t notified mid-fight even though Kizer said he was and that BJ simply replied that GSP ‘kind of’ felt greasy after the second round. You’re not always guaranteed a notification after an infraction occurs even when the referee sees the infraction sometimes they might let it go if they don’t think it was a big deal. BJ is crying that an illegal tactic was used in the fight. BJ is half-heartedly insisting that GSP and his camp used such tactic with the intent to cheat. How is any of this any different from the numerous illegal infractions that occur during a fight? Anyone remember when Ricco Rodriguez spit his mouth piece out in his fight against Antonio Silva so he could get the fight restarted? Or when he claimed he was hurt by an illegal blow to get out from under Silva and winked at the camera? Or how about all the times a fighter gets hit in the back of the head? How often are those illegal tactics done with intent to cheat or done as pure mistakes? Couldn’t Thiago Silva make just as much noise as BJ is doing about the kick in the balls that he got from Machida? Can’t he argue that kick caused him to be unable to gauge the fight fairly and cost him his fight? Shit happens in a fight. But at the end of the day no one sits there whining about it to the extent BJ is. He even claims he knew in advance that GSP was going to grease and ‘notified’ the NSAC the day of the fight (a claim that Keith Kizer doesn’t corroborate). But he didn’t wear his knee sleeves? He didn’t wear any ankle tape? And how does greasing guarantee you an advantage can’t it also make you more vulnerable to chokes if the grease is on your neck or your opponents arms and if the opponent gets your back? This isn’t even smart cheating it was just a dumb ass mistake. What makes me laugh is that if Phil Nurse had bothered to simply wipe his hands with a towel this would be a dead issue. The benefits and drawbacks of using grease in a fight aren’t even all that clear.

Dana is completely right. BJ is being a little bitch. He had his hearing. He couldn’t make any solid arguments which is ridiculous because he is basically trying to prove that GSP intended to cheat and all he has at best is circumstantial evidence. Very circumstantial. His stupid lawyer is robbing him because he has to know there is no case here but is taking his money anyway.

I actually read this ^

Excellent post.

Gotta love Dana White’s ability to get to the point no?

Vegas should take odds on BJ Penn’s next career move.

It occurred to me that this could be a ploy to mess with GSP’s head and take his concentration away from his upcoming fight with Thiago Alves..

I agree

GSP completely broke BJ down. A lot of the holes in BJ’s game he won’t resolve very easily. In particular, his biggest hole is a psychological one. He is wasting his time and energy on things he can’t control. If he really thinks that he lost to GSP because of the grease, he won’t push himself to improve. He’ll think the things he did to prepare in his last fight were fine.

Not to mention that GSP mentioned that BJ has a slow rest time. He pointed out that while BJ has maybe the fastest reaction time in the UFC, which is why he has such a fast jab and such a good counter striker, if you use feints he has is slow in resetting himself. BJ admitted this in his post-fight interview against Sherk he said he had a hard time in the first round because he kept thinking Sherk was going to shoot and so he couldn’t relax and Sherk was landing his hook. It was only when he realized Sherk was going to try and stay standing and trade that he could relax and let his hands go. If anything, after the beating he took, BJ’s reset time and reflexes are slower than ever.

Also, GSP pointed out that BJ is vulnerable to body blows especially in the guard. He has a weak lower abdomen which contributes to his uncanny flexibility in his hips, but he has done nothing to improve his ability to withstand or defend body shots.

I don’t see BJ taking this level of analysis to Kenny Florian’s game. I don’t think there is anyone in BJ’s camp capable of breaking Florian down this specifically. The BJ Penn I saw in UFC 94 was the worst BJ Penn I’ve seen in years. I don’t see him improving with his attitude, I believe we’ve seen the best BJ we are going to see. Now that people know how to fight him, unless BJ switches up everything, he won’t improve and we’ll see him losing a lot more. I call Kenny Florian winning this fight on a unanimous decision and BJ takes another vicious beating. I wouldn’t be surprised if Florian submits BJ in the later rounds.

by Daniel Humire on Mar 23, 2009 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Part of BJ’s advantage is his mystique and aura over the last 5 years. I think GSP completely destroyed that aura BJ has. I think he lost a lot of that aura and I think you are going to see him lose to guys like Florian because those guys are training harder and have more hunger than BJ has. He used to be able to get by on his talent, but guys like Florian have caught up in some ways.

Good peice of advice…. BJ should concentrate on what’s next.

I’m starting to like Kenflo more and more in the upcoming fight.

As far as BJ getting f-cked…. he would be a no name if it wasn’t for the UFC and Dana.
Everybody in the world has moved on …. except BJ and his supporters (of which I used to be a member of – now I’d cheer his moma on instead).

Like Dana is one to talk

He was blowing that shit way out of proportion when it happened as well.

I would have liked to tell BOTH of them to shut the fuck up the day after the thing happened.

Guess it’s better to pull your head out of your ass late than never.

The difference is

that Dana has to protect the business…not just BJ or GSP or even the UFC…he needed to come out and take control of the situation for the entire business of MMA.

Whereas BJ is just whinning at this point and refusing to move on with life…oh, and most of all refusing to look in the mirror to find the most important reason he got his ass handed to him by GSP.

by Razreshat on Mar 23, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Dana is LATE

That Dana call should’ve come much earlier. He wasn’t objective at all in this matter and took BJ’s side right away.

The NSAC verdict contradicts BJ and Dana, who both made a big thing out of this after the fight.

While Lesnar is a good “freak show WWE” type marketing tool, GSP is the UFC’s real marketing gem. He is what will make MMA and UFC legit in the sports world. You don’t risk wasting a diamond like GSP to help an old puddle of mud like BJ Penn.

By letting BJ Penn “BS” so much, Dana made a very bad business decision (which is rare). His bosses (Fertita) probably told him so if he hadn’t realized it by himself.
