Preview of Jason "Mayhem" Miller's Bully Beat Down on MTV

Mayhem Miller's new show "Bully Beatdown" debuts tonight on MTV.

Dave Meltzer explains the show's format and premise:

“Bully Beatdown,” debuting this Sunday on MTV, is the newest Mark Burnett (“Survivor,” “The Apprentice,” “The Contender”) reality show and combines mixed martial arts, a whacky host and a simple concept. People who are being picked on write letters to Jason “Mayhem” Miller, show host and MMA star, who meets the victims, hears their stories, then confronts the perpetrators, offering them a proposition: They can make some money fighting someone who can dish it out, or they can back down on national television.

If they accept, the bully gets into the ring with one of Miller’s friends and/or training partners, an MMA fighter who is roughly the same size as the bully. Miller sits with the victim, and they watch as the bully is put in the position as the victim.

“I’m the superhero who confronts the bullies,” said Miller. “I offer $10,000 to the bully to fight an MMA fighter of his weight.”

But it’s not MMA fighting.

The fights consist of two three-minute rounds. The first round is submission grappling. The bully starts with $5,000 and for every time he taps during the three minutes, $1,000 goes to the victim.

The second round is kickboxing. The bully is allowed to wear headgear, and the two fight with heavily padded gloves. This is a $5,000, winner-take-all round. If the bully can survive without being put down for the 10 count, he gets the money. If he’s knocked out, the victim gets the money. The end of the show is a resolution as, in theory, the bully learns a lesson when the shoe is on the other foot.

Personally, this doesn't look like something I'll be watching much of, but it does seem to be a good premise for a reality show. Everyone likes to see a bully get his comeuppance. I'm mainly glad to see Mayhem raising his media profile. I'm looking forward to him fighting Kala Kolohe Hose in April. Hopefully from there he'll return to DREAM or sign with Strikeforce.

Another great example the MTV generation is setting. How could anyone expect anything less form MTV?

I’ll probably watch it tonight. It looks hilarious!
Plus, I’ve always liked Miller.

Terrible Idea

This whole show is based on faulty logic. Bully the bully to teach him not to bully? Genius!

are you gonna teach your kids not to hit back?

or not to step in when their kids need help?

I think I understand where youre coming from, but when you act a certain way, you leave yoruself open to whatever may come after you, like Mayhem Miller for instance.

im not impressed with your performance

My answer to both questions is no.
The movie “The Bodyguard” comes to mind suddenly.

This is some of the most contrived TV ever

I wouldn’t be surprised if its a hit…..but …..seriously what is this world coming too. This is definitely not the way to deal with the social problems in society….

Doesn’t anybody want to see jerks get their asses kicked?
Morally correct much, people?

I really cant figure out why everyones got such a problem with it

Although the BE community does seem to be very intelligent, which often begets a kind of contemporary intellectualism, which wouldn’t be friendly to a show like this.

Not saying its a bad thing, or good for that matter, thats just the impression that I get.

I’m so down with this, I’m almost ashamed to admit it.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

Amen

Morally, I kinda think it’s wrong, but having been bullied going up, I’ve had many fantasies like this. Yummy…delicious irony…

I'll watch

but I worry that this again skews the public imagination toward MMA fights as thuggish bullying rather than sport.

I disagree.

If anything, it’ll show that the amount of skill and training that gos into MMA puts it miles ahead of anything your average crackhead thug can bring.

eh

I don’t care, won’t watch, etc. But I don’t like Miller so I kind of hope the bully wins.

by mythbuster on Mar 22, 2009 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Im completely with you

I thought I was gonna be the only one that really hopes one of the bullies has absolute dynamite in his hands.

I will laugh my ass off if he knocks one of Miller’s buddies unconscious. Maybe does a Vitor/Lindland seizure job on them.

Gimme 1 round!

But what if the bully wins?

Hey it could happen and if it did the MMA fighter’s career would be basically ruined.

crap I may have to watch this.

I'll watch if...

there’s a stream online. MTV Canada is airing like 6 episodes of Cribs so… otherwise I’ll enjoy the WBC.

Not really that intrested.....

I only watch TUF and stuff like that for the fights. These fights won’t be anything worth watching.

by Dexerion on Mar 22, 2009 7:53 PM EDT reply actions

I would watch this over TUF

TUF is horrible. Maybe one of the bullies could be a diamond in the rough.

Gimme 1 round!

Thanks Mayhem.

Way to make the sport look like shit.

Again.

Bullies apparently AUDITIONED for the show!

We’re casting for a new prime-time pilot called BULLY BEAT DOWN! Yeah we said it…Bullies! Are you that person? The person with a big scary bark who likes to intimidate or perhaps the person who is always talking about how tough they are. If so, we want to put you in the ring and test how tough you really are. The challenge will be to stay in the ring for 5 mins. Think you can handle it? If you have not chickened out yet and you think this is you then please e-mail us with your picture and a brief description about why you think you would be a great fit for this show.

Yet more so-called “reality” TV.

I checked out the website (I’m doing a quick fanpost on it) and Thomas Denny, last seen getting beatdown by Nick Diaz & Pat Miletich, is another. What really pissed me off was seeing JAKE SHIELDS! He’s legit talent! He should be fighting! Since his striking sucks, there won’t be a flashy KO.

And why is BJM there and not in the Octagon?

Two things to focus on there:

1) Bullies suck. This show will be instructive in spreading the anti-bully buzz. Self-defense is a science to be taken seriously. Random aggression is what makes fight sports look dumb.

2) Mayhem deserves the limelight, and he’s doing it with a purpose (see above). Let’s hope he keeps his fighting career alive.

Mayhem deserves the limelight,

Why?

by mythbuster on Mar 23, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess I assumed that most MMA fans recognize that Jason Miller’s talent for self-promotion and TV-friendly antics sets him apart from most other fighters.
