Affliction 3: Not Fedor vs Barnett and Free
According to the "Carmichael Dave Show" on CBS Radio via Sherdog.com:
So who's going to fight Fedor - Belfort, Ortiz, Overeem, Werdum?I will be reporting on my nightly show tonight and the national show tomorrow evening on CBS that I have spoken with a highly placed source with Affliction who has confirmed the following:
- Affliction is going ahead with plans to have their next show go against UFC 100 in July
- Fedor and Barnett WILL both be on the card, but WILL NOT be fighting each other
- The card will be shown for free in its entirety, network TBA
- No confirmation on whether or not this is the final show for Affliction, but the quote given to me was:
" We arent stupid. We arent bringing a knife to a gun fight. This card will be STACKED from top to bottom."
When I countered that with that statement made, a ton of pressure will be put on Affliction to find a favorable opponent for Fedor (since it will be a natural letdown that it isnt Barnett), the quote was:
"The fans will have ZERO problem with Fedor's opponent"
In other words, the old "one door closes, another opens" philosophy.
Stay tuned, and you can always listen to my show from 9-midnight PST weekdays, and the MMA only program this Saturday from 8-9pm PST at Northern California's Sports Station KHTK - Homepage
Stay tuned...

DO NOT WANT
Just watched Arlovski vs. Fedor last night and, channeling GSP, I felt like saying to Andre, “I was not impressed with your performance.” I want to see Fedor fight somebody new. My vote would be for Overeem, but I suspect it’s Belfort.

You were not impressed with th eflying knee thats all. Everything else was going good. My votes would be for a AA rubbermatch, Tito or Overeem but I can only see it being Vitor or AA right now.

Tito won’t be ready.
Overeem is busy with K-1/Dream
Werdum, no just no
Only leaves Vitor and AA and I’d rather see a rematch.

I don't think Overeem is busy with DREAM
He’s got his K-1 fight with Bonjasky,( I think in May is it?). Then the completely RUMORED K-1 fight against Mirko. Then he’s free and clear to fight wherever. Dreams contracts don’t restrict him from fighting in Affliction and he WANTS the Fedor fight. He won’t price himself out of fighting on basic cable by instituting a clause that kicks him an additional immediate million bucks by stepping in the ring with Fedor. Overeem is logical. Lol if its Mirko

Barnett not fighting Fedor
is a result of the Fedor fight bonuses in Affliction’s contracts. AA would once again be getting 1.5 million + to fight him. I think that eliminates him. AA vs Kharitonov??

I’m going with Tito. They’re going to try and pull in the casual fans and the best way to do that is put the biggest name possible against Fedor. Unfortunately for them Tito will get smashed in about 5 seconds, it won’t be pretty.
I’ll be DVR’ing this and watching UFC 100 live.

They are automatically stupid if they don’t put Fedor against Barnett! I don’t think it would be Tito because he said when he comes back that he wants a warm-up fight and he said he won’t be fighting till August. Didn’t Werdum just sign with StrikeForce and Overeem re-sign with Dream? So that narrows it down to one guy Vitor Belfort.
by The Legend on Mar 21, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Barnett gets a million dollar bonus to fight Fedor
He doesn’t get paid that much to fight anybody else. As far as signing with Strikeforce and Affliction. I’m assuming you’re new to the sport and introduced to ZUFFA mostly. Only the UFC/WEC has exclusive contracts. Anybody else in the world, (with the exclusion of Bellator, I don’t know their weird ass contract with regards to exclusivity), that you fight for has contracts that allow you to fight elsewhere so long as it doesn’t interfere with preplanned events for their organization.

But Coker won’t have anybody fighting for him if he gets to the level of exclusivity that ZUFFA does. No ADCC no Sambo no boxing/kickboxing…

Uh, UFC guys have never been barred from competing in ADCC by their contracts.
Sambo? Only person complaining about it was Fedor who was competing in combat sambo.
Boxing/kickboxing? Would anyone honestly have a problem with fighters being barred from competing in either of these while under contract? I’m pretty sure even semi-exclusive contracts would bar you from competing in other combat sports during its duration.

“The fans will have ZERO problem with Fedor’s opponent” By fans I don’t believe he is referring to any of us (BE readers / hardcore fans whatever you want to call it), wich means it’s absolutely possible it may indeed be Kimbo. I think Kimbo is the better pick Tito has his own drawing power even against a well hyped can, why would they waste that? Just to be clear I am not in anyway saying I want to watch Fedor fight either one of them It’s just a hunch.

They’re not talking about numbers. They’re talking about the quality of show and fights. Affliction was superb, and the line-up was epic. Especially 2. Maybe their marketing was a knife, but certainly not the caliber of show. If Affliction’s average show delivers around what 2 did, I’d choose Affliction every single time.
And if Affliction is trying to disrupt UFC 100, they’re going to go big, which means probably Tito, which is great for the average fan, but terrible for us hardcores.

A free show on network television will be huge exposure for Affliction and their fighters. I dont see this show turning a profit without major sponsorships but I do believe that Afflictions stock will rise after the show wich maybe the investors are banking on. If it goes accordingly they can up their price when Dana comes to the table, wich he will. The UFC doesnt want to compete they want to be the only show in town and they can be they have the cash to buy the competition. Afflictions investors know this.
by MrBlond3 on Mar 21, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
they could've waited a week after, and would surely get better ratings, sponsors etc..
but now, everyone will watch 100 and tivo this free card.. It’s sad, i feel bad for affliction really.. The UFC couldn’t be happier with this.. instead of putting up a replay of UFC 95 or whatever to counter-program them, they wouldn’t have to do that cause they’ll be up against UFC 100..
and if they stack this card up with huge name fighters plus fedor, there’s no chance in hell they’ll break even on this..
by Anton Tabuena on Mar 21, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Affliction’s only real investor are themselves. And Dana White and Company have no reason to buy Affliction. It’s better to just let them stop running MMA cards once they lose enough money.
People are only shocked because of the timing of this. If Zuffa announced UFC 100 after Affliction had their card date set, people would be talking about how Zuffa is going to wrecked Affliction.
Affliction is acting like a teenager. They are starving for attention. They are not trying to make the sport better. They don’t even plan on being around for much longer. They just want to hurt the UFC at this point. And I have little to no respect for anybody who comes into MMA and wants to hurt the sport.
Screw Affliction.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN....
It’s going to be on cable, not NetworkTV…
From the Sherdog Post #147…. From the CBS Radio Guy…
“It will not be on PPV, but on cable”
If this isn’t on NetworkTV…. And they are going to compete against the UFC 100 Show AND Floyd Mayweather Jr. on HBO….
Then these “T-Shirt Guys” are beyond stupid.
I have a feeling Zuffa is going to give a few fights away free on SpikeTV BEFORE the PPV starts. And this Affliction show will go up against that as a big FU towards Zuffa.
But WOW…. That’s a lot of cash to blow just to have a big FU towards Zuffa on your way out the sport.

90+% of US households have cable or satellite
Know your statistics. The only question is WHAT cable its on. Spike is still a tier 2 network on cable. VS is about the same.
ESPN may as well be network TV these days. Same with TNT.

Know your facts.
The only two real ratings success’s have been the UFC…. Which got a huge start by being the first, having name recognition, and having a huge lead-in audience like WWE RAW.
The only other ratings success has been EliteXC on CBS. Everything else hasn’t even been a blimp on the radar screen on television.
If Affliction is on CBS, NBC, FOX, or ABC…. They could potentially put a dent in the UFC’s PPV buys. If they are on cable TV, it is highly unlikely that they would put a dent into anything.
by AlwaysRelaxing on Mar 21, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And one more point…. While cable stations like TNT are now getting higher and higher ratings, and network TV is getting lower and lower ratings…. It is still network TV that is capable of bringing in a mass of fans. You put Affliction on CBS, and with the proper advertising and names, it can do 3 to 5 million viewers.
You put that same show on FOX Sports Net… And it does 750,000 tops. Cable TV still doesn’t have the muscle… And the stations that do, wouldn’t put Affliction on their broadcast…. Minus ESPN… And it is highly unlikely they are going to put Affliction on their network AND promote it big time.

If Affliction puts their show on FSN (Unless FSN pays for the whole damn thing salaries and all)
Then they truly have lost their minds and even I will say it.
FSN has about 0.05% market impact. I would be willing to bet HDnet would garner them a higher audience

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 21, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
HDNet is like having blanket prime time coverage across NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox compared to FSN.
FSN could air 1 hour exclusive special on how to turn water into gold and it wouldn’t even garner a rating.
There is still a shot this could be shown on Showtime or CBS but odds are HDNet. That channel is quite content showing the opening round of a Japanese Lightweight tournament featuring unknown 5-3 fighters live 2am – 6am in the morning on a Thursday. An Affliction Saturday prime time event featuring some the worlds best heavyweights is a god send.
by bignerd on Mar 22, 2009 1:45 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
FSN is in around 90 million households, HDnet is only in somewhere around 6 million. FSN is a problem because no one watches FSN, HDnet is a problem because very few people even have the network to start with.

6 million who watch vs 90 million who don’t.
FSN has 50 channels on my my box and I have to guess which 1 out of the 50 isn’t blocked programming. FSN completely sucks, I think we can all agree to that.
by bignerd on Mar 22, 2009 3:51 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The big Fedor special that was on FSN didn’t even have enough viewers to register a Nielson rating, yes FSN sucks ass. HDnet is a better choice for hardcore MMA fans but it just doesn’t have the exposure for them to make a big enough splash to make this worth it.
by who me on Mar 22, 2009 4:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whichever channel it is, I highly doubt that either of them will be able to pay Affliction as much as they would be able to get on PPV the week before or the week after (or probably even that day).
This is why I don’t understand this idea. Yea, they may hurt UFC 100’s numbers a little (but not by much) but they will be also shooting themselves in the heads by doing it. There’s no way for them to make money on the show, and if they do that, the chance of seeing Affliction inside the UFC ever again will shrivel up. I just don’t see the point in doing this.
by Phildo on Mar 22, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No tv channel is going to pay them squat for this regardless of what day it is on and they definatly won’t get more money from a network for putting it on the same day as a competing event (they would probably get less). The channel’s goal would just be to get ratings and going against the UFC event would get them lower ratings than a date with no competition. There is no reason for a cable channel to run this event on that date because of the competition(UFC and HBO boxing).
by who me on Mar 22, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Before you tell someone to “know your statistics” you better check to make sure you actually have them right :D
Approximately 85 percent of U.S. households subscribe to pay TV services, and that percentage is not likely to grow substantially in the foreseeable future.
http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=162657
Yea it’s nitpicky but it is still funny :D
VS would be lucky to be called a third tier niche network(around 70 million households but not a lot of actual viewers). ESPN is in around 90 million households(about the same for SpikeTV) the big 3 networks hit 115 to 120 million households.

Wand vs Rampage was an exciting fight
Griffen vs Rashad was between two top level guys but in no means the #1 and #2 people want to pretend it was. Griffen is maybe #5 MAYBE and Rashad is probably somewhere around 3-5. I’d be willing to bet $100 his opponent will be Tito. That fight is the only one with as much if not more appeal than Barnett. Hell, I’d much rather see him fight Ortiz than Barnett actually. Maybe the UFC will finally step up with 100 now. It’s lookin good, but definitley not living up to my expectations as being the greatest card of all time. Penn vs. Florian please.

Then we can wonder if Fedor could hang with Dos Santos

This is getting better and better by the day, I can’t wait to see this “stacked card” that is going to make zero impact against UFC 100 and help them lose even more money that their first 2 shows did.

Conspicuous in his absence;
Mr. I told you mother fuckers Fedor/Barnett was happening in June.
