Ricardo Lamas Impressive in WEC 39 Debut
For making his debut against seasoned and well-rounded veteran Bart Palaszewski on five days notice, it's difficult to not be impressed with Ricardo Lamas. With only five professional fights on his resume prior to last night, Lamas still lacks experience as well as a complete enough stand-up game that allows him the ability to do more than to use exchanges on the feet as a stop-gap for inevitable takedowns. But Lamas also has quite a few positives: pinpoint accuracy as well as considerable power in his GNP, solid takedowns, a usable gas tank, defensive adaptability, improvisation and confidence. There's still a very open question about how he'll respond to fighters who nullify Lamas' stifling wrestling, but if given time it's reasonable to expect Lamas to add more well-roundedness to his game.
Trying to gauge a fighter's ability to perform on the big stage when they are making the leap from regional shows can often be dicey, but Lamas appears primed for a run in the WEC provided he's granted graduated matchmaking. His talent is considerable and I know I speak on behalf of a significant portion of the MMA community when I say I look forward to discovering precisely what he's capable of doing.

I was really surprised last night. I thought he was gonna get overwhelmed like most newbies. Really impressed with him. He seems smart and confident. That improvised head kick from Barts back was just plain awesome. Better standup and a better nickname would suit him well. New fan of his.
BTW, its good to see Mexico and Cuba getting in on the fighter sponsorships. :P

The sneaky left jab he kept throwing when he was stackin up on Bart was nice.
He landed it every time he threw it I believe, nice to see someone utilizing a game plan where he was using clinch work and takedowns and keeping the fight on the ground using his wrestling.
Better than most new guys with a wrestling base (Bickle) who try to swing for the fences and do not play into their strengths.
A very good performance, but I have no idea who they should match him up against. Perhaps Cerrone? Rob McCullough? Hicks?
It’s Palaszewski too btw, it is definitely the hardest name in MMA to spell.
Harder than Krystxzfrq Soszynski??
No, but seriously… too bad that’s the first time most viewers have ever seen Bart. For one- he looked like he didn’t even belong in the WEC if that’s all you ever saw of him. For two- Lamas won’t get all the credit he deserves from that performance.
Bart probably won’t make it to the televised portion on his next fight, but I really hope Lamas does. Forget Hicks or McCullough- neither one of their stocks is especially high right now. He should get Crunkilton next with the same deal on the table as Bart had – winner gets title shot.
Bit early for a title shot isn’t it?
As far as Hicks, he needs to stop relying exclusively on the guillotine and develop some other aspects of the game.
I understand your skepticism
And I’d naturally ask the same question, but consider this…
-the lightweight division holds the fewest contenders
Hicks is out; McCullough is still far away; Bart is out; Henderson is good, but unknown; karalexis is far away.
-Lamas was actually seen on tv
There are certainly other 1-0 LWs, but none of them have been given this kind of exposure. And you have to admit that Lamas made the most out of it.
-They obviously considered Crunkilton worthy of the shot
Really, if they were setting up this Palaszewski-Crunkilton fight as a co-main event with a title shot on the line, what’s wrong with Lamas facing the guy he replaced for the same deal?
Plus it could be good for Bart as well. If Lamas gets another TV fight and impresses, suddenly a lot more people are going to be open-minded about Bart’s loss. It might even set up a worthy rematch later on down the road.
Lamas
Honestly, the most impressive part in his game was his cardio. I mean, the guy was fresh at the start of the third round, and Bart looked like he was trying to weather a storm that never stopped. He knew he was getting beat in the first, and I think he figured Lamas would gas out.

Best fight of night
You’re right about the cardio… especially with 5 days notice!! I’ve never seen such a dominant win for someone with such short notice. I think he showed signs of greatness. Classy kid too.
