Quote of the Day: Intelligent Defense in Mixed Martial Arts
"I said, 'Look, I need to be able to stop the fight if this fighter cannot intelligently protect himself.' They said, 'Well, OK, that’s fine. If they’re hurt to the point where they’re out, you can stop the fight.' So I use that term. If you cannot intelligently defend yourself, I am going to stop the fight. There’s going to be variances in it. There is nothing that can be written absolute in terminology that is going to make it to where everyone goes by the same quorum of, 'This is what it is.' I know based on all of the fights I’ve done and what I am looking at, I look at certain things. When I teach people, I teach them about body position and what the fighter is telling you.
I see fights go on all of time. You watch UFC 95 -- there were fights that were going on, and I know the fighter has quit. The fighter that is losing has gotten to the point where he’s stopped. He’s stopped fighting; he is surviving. And is he intelligently protecting himself? Absolutely not, and it’s time to get him out of the fight because he has mentally given up in the fight. He is telling you that by his body motions and what he is doing, but [refs] let those fights go on. There are people out there that say they should until these guys can’t move. Well, that’s ridiculous. When it comes to being able to perfectly articulate what “cannot intelligently defend himself” is, there’s never going to be this absolute.
But you’ve got to have enough smarts as far as if a guy is face down on the ground and his hands are down, he is taking blows to the side of his head, and he is not moving -- that man is not intelligently defending himself. It takes no training to do what he is doing. Intelligent defense, on the other hand, is if you look at someone who does get hit and goes backwards and their feet come up and their hands are out, they’re in a position to intelligently defend themselves. Are they going to? I can’t say that. But at least they’re in a position to do it. And they’re trying to show that, 'I know I’ve got to do something.' And as the punch comes, they’re in a position to at least deal with it. If they don’t deal with it well, then we might have to stop it with the next punch."
-- "Big" John McCarthy talking to TJ DeSantis about intelligent defense, what is means, how it's evolved and how he applies the concept to refereeing.

The UFC has to get their head out of their asses and get Big John back in the cage.

Absolutely agree with this.
Their main refs should be Big John, Herb Dean, Yves Lavigne(usually good aside from UFC 96 debacle) and Mario Yamasaki (sp?).
A couple of the British guys are pretty good too, but I don’t remember their names.

am I the only person who was reading this and picturing BJ Penn eating about 10,000 Matt Hughes shots to the head as Big John sat around and twiddled his thumbs?

I just watch the fight 5 minutes ago. I think the stoppage was good, Bj was given a chance to return the situation, it was a match for the belt.

it was probably more like 20 unanswered shots. There was nothing wrong with the Hughes/BJ stoppage. Guys get caught in the crucifix position all the time and are able to escape and keep fighting. its not like they were powerful shots or anything. I mean, Im sure they hurt like hell but its not gonna cause serious damage. that stoppage was correct imo

Right you are, but when Big John finally did stop it – he kneed BJ’s head big time. BJ didn’t tap and didn’t get KO’d from Hughes, but that knee from Big John may have done him in.

haha, ill have to watch for that next time they show the fight on unleashed. But Id have to say that this is about the only case i can think of that you can even debate that Big John messed up.. Which is just further evidence that he is by far the best ref in the biz.

UFC Unleashed
recently showed the Arlovski v Buentello fight again. The way Big John identified that Buentello was KO’d so quickly was genius at work.
Frankly, I’d prefer that he referee less and train other refs more if it means the body of available refs improves and expands.

I’d pay a lot of money to be trained by Big John. If I ever find the time, I really want to go to one of his training seminars.

I don’t recall the stoppage – care to elaborate?

Arlovski KO’d Buentello in 15 seconds. As I recall, they squared off at the center and Arlovski kind of threw this looping punch as he ducked (something to that effect) just as Buentello was trying to get off a shot. He was out cold on his feet. John stopped the fight and people were booing, until they saw the replay :)

Yeah, it looked from some angles like Arlovski and Buentello were clinching of that AA was trying to take him down (!?!), but AA had actually knocked his marbles loose. BJM stopped the fight immediately, the crowd booed like crazy, then they showed the replay while Buentello wobbled around the ring with a “what happened?” look on his face, and everyone shut up. The only two people who saw the righ hand land and Buentello go out were BJM and Joe Rogan.

Correct me if...
I’m wrong, but wasn’t the NSAC that yanked Big Johns license? He was breaking rules when he was working on a show as a commentator. I’m not too sure what involvment the UFC has in this. Well other than the fact that they are not lobbying for Big Johns reinstatement as a ref. I’ll be the first to say that Dana is a dick if he’s not atleast trying to get Big John back. Best in the business hands down.

I’ve never heard of such of thing. He retired in December 2007 after the Guida vs. Huerta fight, which was in Vegas.

I was under that assumption because he had been a commentator for another event. I’m not too familiar with Big Johns particulars. My bad, don’t want to start anything.
On that note though, he doesn’t have a license to ref in Nevada. And in another interview he says he is going to talk to Keith Kizer of the NSAC. I think this is were some of the confusion has occurred.
