Aleksander Emelianenko: "We Offered Josh Barnett a Rematch and He Refused"

From Sports.ru

Translation props goes to Sherdog member stripthesoul:

Hello! There are many news. I can already say where I'm getting offers to continue my career - from Holland's Golden Glory, Japan's DREAM, president of the UFC Dana White wants me to fight for them. All the contracts offered are long term, so I have not made up my mind yet, where I will compete. I'm thinking and preparing for the fight against Ibrahim Magomedov on March 29th.

I'm preparing in several Petersburg's gyms at the same time with my permanent trainer Yuri Razumov. And now I can say, that it's more convenient to prepare this way - I have many more sparring partners.

Also, I made, actually still making a new tattoo. I got a little tired of smartasses, who see in me some criminal authority, and want to prove that I can put any drawing that I like on my body. Now, I'm going to have a drawing of the moment from the famous Kulikovskoy battle on my chest "Battle of Aleksander Peresvet with Mongol-Tatar knight Chelubey"

I wanted to get this tattoo for a long time. In my childhood when I saw this picture in one of the books, I got very fond of it. And now that I found a very good master, decided, that it's the most fitting moment.

The tattoo is not ready yet. Almost every day he's working on it. And there will be more work after the fight. But when it's all ready it should look great.

Aleksander, there was some official information on Sherdog, that you weren't allowed to fight in the States because of hepatitis. Did you hear that. How much truth is in it?

It's all nonsense. I did not get in on the first Affliction show, because there were some problems with documents. I flew in, and passed the medical commission. Everything was fine. Then they tell me that I flew in too late and cannot compete. And before the second event, I injured my hand. I sensed that I would not be able to compete at full strength and asked them myself not to schedule the fight. I'm hoping to compete on the third Affliction show this summer in America.

How many seconds would you last against your brother? Do you think about a rematch with Crocop?

I never thought about a fight with my brother, because we will never fight against each other. We offered a rematch to Crocop many times, but he refused; and now Mirko is not the same anymore; his last fights showed that. And my loss to him should not be overestimated. I was only 23 years old then, my fourth fight in MMA, and Filipovic was already a top fighter.

I read your interview in a newspaper where you said that you would beat anybody. Don't you think there's nobody really left to beat at this point?Nogueira, Silva, Couture are old and beaten - Mir, Gonzaga, Herring - not interesting and beaten - and today's champion Lesnar - he's laughable to look at! Whom would you like to fight?

Agreed, there's nobody to beat, so that's why I don't care who I fight with. I want to fight who others consider the best.

I would love to see your fight with Cheick Kongo! Can you tell us if you have a will to rematch Barnett and Crocop?

I already answered about Crocop earlier. We offered Barnett a rematch and he refused. But last summer in America, during the first Affliction show, he came up to me all green and with shaking lips said "Sasha, I agree to fight with you". Therefore, possibly, revenge between us will take place.

Barnett Refuses Rematch with Aleks Emelianenko

Well, no kidding. Would you fight a guy with Hepatitis?

Yes, he denies it. Still, we have yet to see him fight in the US since the story emerged. If Affliction puts on a third show (don’t hold your breath), we’ll see whether or not he breaks his hand again, or if he doesn’t get his paper work filed on time again, or if he comes up with some other excuse.

Or maybe he just does, in fact, have Hepatitis.

He really isn’t even in the Heavyweight Discussion until he competes on one of the big shows again. and I think we all know that isn’t going to happen.

Aleksander's comments on the heavyweight field

are pretty amusing. I feel bad for the guy, but denial runs deep.

The Guy asking the questions was pretty damn out of line with his comments on the heavyweight division, sounds like some kid at a school newspaper asking the questions

Agreed

I can’t stand Lesnar but to infer that he is not proper competition because he is “laughable to look at” seems pretty silly. I wonder how many observers of MMA dis-credit Lesnar because of his physicallity. I don’t see many fighters jumping at the chance to schedule a fight against the “Laughable Lesnar”.

Old and beaten + uninteresting and beaten. Everyone’s been beaten. The difference, Aleks, is that they are facing top competition. Who was the last real opponent you had? Fabricio Werdum? How’d that go? Oh that’s right we’re not gonna mention it in the interview, we’re jsut gonna talk about how Barnett won’t rematch you.

The lies keep on coming from Aleks. Even Buentello (who has nothing to gain from saying it) said that the commission guys told him Aleks had hepatitis.

by ilostmydog on Mar 18, 2009 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

That’s what I don’t get about this situation.

Why would Buentello make this up? With his interview with fanhouse, he pretty much confirmed the original rumor (that someone at the weigh in told him Aleks had hep), why would he continue to keep this up if it wasn’t true, or if it didn’t happen?

by Phildo on Mar 18, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

So he can still get fights and make cash money?

by ilostmydog on Mar 18, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I get why aleks would lie, but I don’t get why buentello would keep telling the story if it wasn’t true.

Which is basically what you are saying if you say that Aleks doesn’t have hep. You are saying that Buentello made this up, and now months later is retelling the lie. I don’t see any reason for that to happen.

by Phildo on Mar 18, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Who knows what goes through his head but it’s a shame that he isn’t called out for this stuff in interviews. CSAC doesn’t “deny” you license because of late paperwork and late paperwork obviously isn’t what Buentello has been referring to.

The one thing that I can absolutely say is that he (Emelianenko) was not and will not be cleared to fight in California. He is officially denied a license and that will stand for all of the United States of America

Bill Douglas, CSAC

Yeah, for sure. How could he get denied for late paperwork, but Gary Goodridge could get ok’ed to fight on less than a day’s notice as his replacement?

by ilostmydog on Mar 18, 2009 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Even when Nick DIaz got pulled for from a card for late paperwork he was still able to get his CSAC license after everything was completed. Fighter license aren’t for specific fights they are for a specific time frame(I believe 1 year), even if his paperwork was late they would of still licensed him when it was finally recieved and processed. Regardless of what is going on here late paperwork is a completly bogus excuse.

by who me on Mar 19, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions

The Nick Diaz fight was a special case and its crazy they pulled him from the card. It was because they told him he could use medical marijuana when he asked months in advance, then days before the fight they went back on that. Nick says he uses it leading up to fights for anxiety so it was too late because it was recently in his system

The late paperwork there was them changing their mind last minute

by EazyEismydad on Mar 19, 2009 6:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Marijuana is on the banned substance list, having a perscription for medical marijuana is irrelevant because there are lots of perscription drugs that are on the banned substance list. No one told Diaz he could have it in his system perscription or not because you obviously can’t have anything off the banned substance list in your system regardless of if you have a doctor’s perscription. Guys on perscription medication have to stop taking them before fights all the time, that’s nothing new to the sport and there are no outstanding questions/confusion about that issue.

There was a lot of odd speculation about that situation but what it boiled down to was a paperwork issue, if you put medical marijuana on your license application but don’t provide a perscription then it’s going to clog things up on the doctor’s side until you do. It’s like going down to get your drivers license and not bringing all the information they asked for, your application isn’t going to go through until you complete the process. As soon as Nick got his paperwork issues straightened out he got his license and he has fought in California since then without problems.

I’m pretty sure that this is a recorded conversation that Aleks had with himself.

I always enjoyed his fights. They were always full of action and not a lot of boring clinching. His fight against Barnett was terrific, him beating on Barnett over and over again until Barnett’s head finally tired out his fists.

by Dooda on Mar 18, 2009 2:11 PM EDT reply actions

Paul Buentello, on the Underground forum, commented on it. Here is what was said:

You’re referring to Aleksander Emelianenko pulling out of the fight that you guys were scheduled to have last summer, when the California State Athletic Commission refused to sanction him at the last minute. Have you ever gotten a straight answer on what happened there?

Yeah, they told me. Everybody knows, but I don’t want to say it on the record. But everybody knows the reason why. The truth is out there. I don’t want to get the Commission mad at me for saying what they told me, but everybody knows.

I understand why you don’t want to say, but Aleksander is fighting in other countries. Don’t you think his opponents in other countries have a right to know why he isn’t allowed to fight in California anymore?

Oh, totally. His opponents need to know. Everybody thinks boxing commissions are a bad thing fo the sport, but they’re a good thing for the sport. They’re there to protect the fighters. The commissions only go to the borders of the United States. It would be nice if it was international.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Unless Paul is lying, it certainly sounds like it is a medical issue.

by Lynchman on Mar 18, 2009 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

Hepatitis is curable

In both forms A and B. C is treatable and some evidence shows that 90% of people that are negative 6 months after stopping treatment remain negative. The thing is did Aleks get treated early enough to cure it? The period is generally 6 months after contraction to be able to clear it from the body.

That is another reason why he can fight outside of the states if he does have it. If somebody fights him they then have to get checked periodically to make sure they don’t develop it. If they do they can get treated for it

here is another interesting tidbit i found on Yahoo answers. As it is unsourced I can’t verify this and I didn’t know it prior but it certainly sounds plausible.

Uncommonly, some patients with hepatitis C will clear the infection on their own. When this happens, their blood continues to have antibodies to the hepatitis C virus so they continue to test positive for hepatitis C according to standard blood tests BUT when their blood is checked specifically for the hepatitis C virus, it isn’t present.

He can fight elsewhere because MMA is generally not regulated so independant medical tests are not done.

by Lynchman on Mar 18, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Acute HBV goes away on it’s own most of the time, chronic HBV is something you have for the rest of your life (although it is treatable with daily treatments). Of course even with acute HBV the virus’s DNA stays in your system and it can reactivate and re-infect the carrier at a later date. The reports were that Aleksander had B and you wouldn’t deny him license for the acute strain you would tell him to retest in 6 months to a year.

As to why he can fight outside of the US that is because there is no MMA regulation in a lot of places, Sherdog reported that he was also not allowed to fight in Japan though.

by who me on Mar 19, 2009 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Or you could have had

an overzealous guy looking to get quoted that didn’t understand acute HBV is curable. I find it hard to believe that this didn’t come up in PRIDE. So when did the ban get instituted over there? Even in Japan they blood test for diseases and HIV.

I think the guy deserves at least the benefit of one more review stateside because i’m so sure the guy that was talking to the press about his licensing was a fully accredited medical doctor who knew all about the disease.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 19, 2009 2:50 AM EDT up reply actions

With his unresolved medical situation blocking possibly lucrative fights in Japan and the United States, Fedor Emelianenko’s younger but bigger brother has to look to local organizations to keep his career alive.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/10-march-tussles-worth-watching-16411

The guy who made this quote:

The one thing that I can absolutely say is that he (Emelianenko) was not and will not be cleared to fight in California. He is officially denied a license and that will stand for all of the United States of America

is CSAC Assistant Executive Officer Bill Douglas (the guy who basically took over for Garcia). Your not talking about some CSAC guy who doesn’t know how to read a medical report leaking something here you are talking about the guy running the show making a definitive statement that Aleksander Emelianenko is denied his fighter’s license and will not be cleared in the future. It’s not a situation where the guy making the statement mispoke because he doesn’t understand the very basics of HBV or didn’t have doctors making that judgement before a decision was made or didn’t double check the results beforehand. All that said I’m sure they would retest him if he re-applied, as would Nevada if he applied there but that doesn’t fit with Aleksander Emelianenko not even admitting that it was a medical issue that kept him off the Affliction card.

by who me on Mar 19, 2009 3:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh I'm pretty sure he's had it

but to say that what he has is chronic HBV or HCV and will never be cleared is being presumptuous given that what he has can in some cases be cured IMO.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 19, 2009 3:48 AM EDT up reply actions

No chronic B can never be cured, it can be controlled but not cured and even acute stays dormant in your system. It’s not like they can’t tell the difference between the types and strains from the test, they know exactly what he does and doesn’t have. At this point it would be up to him to prove he doesn’t have what ever he tested for not for CSAC to chase him down in Russia and test him again.

He’s not only not trying to clear his name he is sticking with his late paperwork story that doesn’t make sense. I don’t know what he has but there is obviously something up besides late paperwork and if it was me under that kind of suspicion I would definatly want to clear the air with more test and released results not brush it under the table with a sad excuse that doesn’t hold water.

by who me on Mar 19, 2009 4:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

What if he’s got an extremely contagious case of herpegonasyphalitis like that one dude had on that TUF? He didn’t have Hep but they wouldn’t clear him either. It’d make my cheeks blush to come out and tell the world that my exploits with St. Petersburg’s finest streetwalkers caught up to me when 30 prison tattoo’s couldn’t.

Gimme 1 round!

by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 19, 2009 4:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes but they didn’t ban that guy for herpegonasyphalitis, the CSAC statement on Emelianenko was that he was that he will not be licensed period not that he would not be licensed right now. It’s the fact that CSAC made it clear that they wouldn’t license him in the future that is the big stand out issue here, if he had something that would clear up in 6 months to a year they wouldn’t of denied him a license they would of told him to come back in 6 months to a year.
