Steroids, Ken Shamrock Talk With BloodyElbow.com on Fight Network Radio

Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be a guest on Fight Network Radio with Mauro Ranallo. We talked about Ken Shamrock's career, steroids in sports/why steroids should be regulated in MMA and "Mask" from Tapout. Listen to the whole thing here.

I'd fine that show more appealing if they seperated actual combat sports from

professional wrestling.

Marking the anniversary of when some pro-wrestler won a title belt just seems…well, stupid.

I completeley agree. But every time I bring that up here, the fires of hell envelope me as if I have I have commited a sacreligious act. Pro-wrestling and MMA have roots back when… yadda yadda fricken yadda. It’s not shoot AND show, it’s shoot or show. I subscribe to the latter.

Word. The only good puroresu programming they have is Pancrase and UWF-i when Dan Severn is legitimately destroying little dudes while Takada slapfights two guys at once

Nice interview. Interesting perspective on the steroid issue but I have to disagree with you. The long term effects of steroid use is only in its infancy. There simply haven’t been enough studies done that offer insight into the effects that steroids will have on the body 10, 20, 30 years down the line. Even with safe doses, everybody reacts differently. With as little as .7 ml per week, you can experience gyno the development of hard tissue under the nipples that like 70% of fighters have(Joe Daddy, Evans, GSP). You have to take Tamoxafin to combat this, which is a drug to prevent breast cancer in woman, and may be linked to testicular cancer when taken by males. Roids also dramatically change your personality. When your levels of testosterone are low, you’ll be a depressed, sensitive, liberal to a alpha male, aggressive, road raging, conservative when your levels are slightly elevated.I know this sounds weird, but I speak from experience. Growth hormones are already taken by the the majority of fighters who can afford them, because they’re not tested for. Early research is promising in this field as long as dosages are correct. And with roids, you develop a tolorance and need more and more. Long term exposure to doses as low as 100mg per week are possibly being linked to prostate cancer. After your cycle you need clomid or hcg (other meds made for women with fertility problems) that may or may not work, and are not meant to be used by males. Also, what about the fighters who make 2-3 grand per fight. They won’t be on the same playing field as fighters who make more and are able to purchase top of the line exotics that are in fact safer like primobolin or anavar. The low paid athletes will take the harsh cheap stuff like d-bol or anadrol. Plus, MMA is booming among our youth. What message will it send to aspiring fighters who are still growing if roids were regulated. They would certainly increase their usage, and that usage would not be regulated. I know I’m sounding like a highschool locker poster, but steroids are very, very dangerous, and at this time, there is not enough research to determine a safe dosage, or what the long term imolications will be. Fighters need to be punished severly for steroid usage. Look at how much usage has dropped in baseball now that testing is being implimented. We can’t simply accept that they’re going to do it anyways. The harsher the penalties, the more usage will go down. Plus, they still have growth, which is highly effective, but admittedly, I don’t know much about that stuff. If anything needs to be regulated, its marijuana. Marijuana has wonderful benifits and is harmless, and does not increase athletic performance, therefore is ridiculous that it is tested for, but that’s a discussion for another day.

im guessing you smoke marijuana and do not use P.E.Ds. one could argue that the stress relieving capabilities of marijuana allow a fighter who is using to have an advantage over non users. there are plenty of times at my job that i may have quit had it not been for a little stress relief after work. could not the same be said for a fighter who goes through the rigors of training, being away from family and friends or just the minor bumps and bruises that marijuana can help to alleve. it may not be a Performance Enhancer per say, but surely it has benefits that the non user is not privy to.

If you allow a certain level of safe steroid use you would just have guys going out and getting more to give them an extra bump. Maintaining a complete ban and increasing the level of testing is the only way to limit the number of athletes using dangerous doses.
