Sportscasters Should Be Embarrassed
via bigheaddc.com
Michael Wilbon: 'On Saturday Night Rampage Jackson beat up Keith Jardine in a unanimous decision. Big deal, yes or no?'
Tony Kornheiser: 'It would mean more to me if he beat Keith Lockhart. I don't know who Keith Jardine is.'
Is it just me or isn't it ESPN analysts jobs' to know about the popular US sports? MMA outsold boxing and WWE last year in PPVs and beat out playoff ratings for both the NHL and NBA when they were up on competing nights. I would be embarrassed to admit not to know one of the more visible fighters of the sports if I got paid to know things like that.

The problem is that you actually are a normal person with a healthy sense of shame. The same cannot be said for these gents.

Kornheiser...
doesn’t know about ANY sport. He’s got the most incredibly basic sports knowledge of anyone in a position such as his that I’ve ever seen.

Kornheiser does a great radio program, but it is almost zero percent sports. He has been covering sports so long I think he is borred with them. He stopped having passion for sports about five years ago. That was before MMA was worth covering to guys like him so there is really no hope of him coming along. He will continue to spew crap about MMA until he retires.

LOL, honestly, the hate fest is absurd
I’m sorry. The comments that the ESPN guys make are ridiculous, but the obvious trash talking everyone does is more embarassing.
What do people expect? Not everyone in the known universe follows MMA, so when someone makes a comment, it launches this huge “LET’S LYNCH THEM!” mob.
Kornheiser doesn’t watch MMA and neither does Wilbon. They’re both oblivious. I think I’ve heard Wilbon mention “Rampage” as his favorite fighter, but then screw up about 12 other facts about MMA.
Most of us are fairly long time fans of the sport, and even casual fans know more about MMA than these guys. Obviously, anything they say will upset the MMA masses, but we’re a part of the MMA fanbase. It makes no sense for us to go crazy about this. We know a LOT about MMA, these guys don’t

PTI is more of an op-ed show. They are supposed to be overly ridiculous to incite opinions.

Thats all well and good if they were normal people. They are not though. They are paid for their opinions on popular sports. I don’t watch baseball but if I had their job I would and I would know everything I need to know. Its just incompetence at this point in the sports popularity.
I mean Jardine recently beat two UFC champions and is headlining a PPV. Its not like this is Jamie Varner or Brett Rogers

Actually, they aren’t paid to know everything. That’s the show. They just spit ridiculous comments and spit back and forth at each other. Every show is ladden with Wilbon telling Kornheiser he’s an idiot for not knowing what he’s talking about, and vice versa. They don’t claim to ever know everything.
That’s one of the reasons a lot of people like it. They are argumentative even when neither one knows what the hell they’re talking about.

People don’t watch PTI to get informed about sports. They watch it because its funny watching them banter back and forth on topics they have a basic grasp of but not much beyond that.
by ItBurnzWhenIP on Mar 13, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
On PTI they give roughly one minute to each topic
so how much can you expect to hear. Last year MMA was never mentioned on the show & now it is. I say that progress is being made & the more popular gets the more attention it will get.

I’m just asking that the professionals act professional. If you know the question is coming spend 2 minutes to google Keith Jardine, a 9 fight UFC veteran. Its not the length of his response, but rather his content.
If they really have this level of general knowledge of athletics they should be replace by better people. But you can keep defending people who are getting free money

They are informed about what they report on 95% of the time,
which is NFL,MLB,NBA. It is basically a current events show for sports. I think that it is a good thing that MMA fighters are getting time on this show. Like NCSAR pointed out, this is the highest rated show on ESPN next to Sportscenter. All in good time my man!

I understand your point,
but these guys are ex-sports writers which means they are really only supposed to cover the big three sports in the US-NFL, MLB, NBA. Of course they could & probably should do more research, but MMA on ESPN is really still in its infancy. The more high profile the fighters become, the more they will know. You really cannot expect them to know much about Keith Jardine like we as fans do. They know the big names, Randy, Chuck, Rampage, Lesnar.

Is it better to have a topic they know nothing about?
Why bring it up if you can’t intelligently discuss it? Kornheiser’s ignorance (and I have heard him say negative things about MMA before) serves to support the feelings of those in the viewing audience who see MMA as a fringe sport. “They said it on ESPN.” Put MMA Live or some other programming ON THE AIR and this will disappear. If guys like Kornheiser and Wilbon know one thing, it’s when they’re being left behind by a bandwagon.

people tune in to ESPN for sports. I don’t care if Charlie Gibson doesn’t know the difference between an armbar and a triangle, but sports commentators should be somewhat aware of relevant sports.

This is one of the largest problems MMA as a sport encounters.
Check this link…….<a href=“….”http://mmaopinion.com/2009/03/11/learning-and-teaching-mma/" >" >
The article talks about this issue in depth. It is a reply to comments made by a sports journalist out of Ohio that compared MMA to Rollerball…….
In the defense of the PTI guys it is their show. It is the most successful show other than Sportscenter on the network. They are doing something right.
They simply need to be educated on the sport of MMA. once they understand the sport, their views and opinions may change. Either way Jardine fighting Rampage doesn’t truly have a place (at this time) with the Kobe, A-Rod, and Lebron talk…
by NCSAR on Mar 13, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It was during “the rundown” so it was more of a one or two sentence thing, not really on the level of other stories.

I watch PTI everyday.
I have saw them talk about MMA several times. Sure they aren’t very well educated on it.
Two years ago they couldn’t even tell you a fighter. Now they know some names and can at least carry on a conversation about it. Is it a good intelligent conversation? No not by any stretch of the imagination but they have made progress.
Also at least 75% of the time when talking about MMA one of them or both of them comment about how they have no idea what the hell they are talking about.
They do pretty much the same thing when they are talking about NASCAR. NASCAR is even shown on their network.

Probably should know the “point” of PTI before making a post on it. It isn’t ESPNEWS or Sportscenter here, it is a great show though.
If PTI gets you this upset about making a “joke” about Keith Jardien then Around the Horn would make you go crazy, when whenever mma is mentioned Mariotti (who I assume everyone hates like me) goes on about hating the sport and how its a disgrace and such.
Jim Rome, an old man who tries to act like he’s 21 and comes off ridiculous, I don’t like him but I watch his show and listen to his radio show sometimes and he jumped on the mma bandwagon before anyone else at ESPN so if you want someone legit mma mentions on ESPN, watch his show.

Marrioti would vehemently try to tell you that “THAT SPORT SUCKS” if he didn’t know anything about it, and then go on a rampant argument about why when he had no evidence to support it.
Kornheiser does that to an extent, but nothing like Marrioti.
