Dana White Comments on Death of Charles "Mask" Lewis

Promoted from the fan posts by Kid Nate.

“But I’m going to tell you right now, you couldn’t meet a nicer guy, a more friendly, outgoing guy, a more loyal guy. He really was a good person. He’s one of the pioneers, one of the legends of this sport.

“This guy was selling T-shirts out of the trunk of his car and when we first got involved with the UFC, we met them. We really liked them, we liked their energy. They were good people and we got together and we started doing all this grassroots marketing together - the UFC and Tapout. They were very loyal to us and we were very loyal to them.

“And it sucks to see a guy who has worked so hard his whole life, to finally make it and break through, and then have something like this happen to him.”

There’s an article in the L.A. Times reporting:

Authorities said Kirby was speeding in his 1977 Porsche early Wednesday morning on Jamboree Road in Newport Beach when he lost control and crashed into Lewis’ 2004 Ferrari, which caused the sports car to veer into the light pole.

It seems the accident was not a result of racing.

How does a ferrari rip in half if it’s not traveling a really high speed? racing or not, this was not a simple hit and run. the physics of a car crashes don’t change because we want it to.

I don’t know anyting about car crashes, I was just passing along what I read. No need to debate.

actually what you did was post what you read, and then you provided your own commentary based on what you read without thinking about the actual facts of this incident. i’m not debating anything, just pointing out that one of the finest constructed automobiles in the world doesnt rip in half upon contact with light poles or trees if it was not travelling at high speed when it makes that contact. these are not tonka toys, they are highly sophisticated and extremely well engineered pieces of automotive machinery, designed to protect their passengers from even the most horrific of impacts….think it thru

A Ferrari certainly does crumple like a soda pop can when it rams into something at any considerable rate of speed. 50 miles per hour is enough to do the job. 70 or 80 miles per hour is more than enough. These cars are built to be light and THEN to have as much crash protection as possible under the circumstances… not the other way around.

they’re built with lighter AND stronger modern materials. these cars are engineered to be able to withstand speeds in excess of 150 mph. the suspensions are made for high speeds and awesome cornering. and just pick up a car magazine…you’ll see that ferrari’s are built for safety as well as performance. crumpling on impact and ripping literally in half are two very different things.

From the ocregister.com article:

"Prosecutors could also later add a street-racing enhancement to the charges if the investigation reveals that the two drivers were racing as they sped northbound on Jamboree Road near Bison Avenue.

Baez said that skid marks at the scene and other evidence indicate that both drivers were traveling at high speeds when the initial contact took place."

i think that imformation speaks for itself.

An accident at 70 miles per hour is a high speed accident, and the fact that there are skid marks doesn’t mean they were street racing. It means they were both driving fast. If you don’t think that any car would rip in half if it hit a lightpole driving at that speed, let alone a sports car built with weight as the primary consideration and safety as secondary, we will have to agree to disagree.

it’s as simple as you don’t know anything about cars in general, much less high performance sports cars like a ferrari. you’re pulling 70 mph out of your ass and using it like you have any evidence to back that claim up. if you think ferrari’s are unsafe in any respect, you need to watch some GT racing and take a look at a few crash tests. Watch a Top Gear episode or two and you might start to learn something. Mark my words, this was street racing. and to call it anything else is to miss a perfect teaching opportunity for every dumbshit that drives too fast.

The Savage Dog Show had a great tribute show to Mask today with messages from a lot of fighters, trainers, agents, writers, etc.

For those who don’t know, the hosts Jeff Sherwood (aka Sherdog) and Greg Savage were longtime friends of his.
