Mark Coleman vs. Stephan Bonnar Possible For UFC 100
Fighters Only is reporting that a light heavyweight bout featuring UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman and TUF star Stephan Bonnar is possible for the UFC 100 card in July:
UFC Hall of Fame inductee Mark Coleman has been offered a fight with Stephan Bonnar on the undercard of UFC 100, Fighters Only has learned.
A source close to Coleman says he has accepted the fight, but there is no word yet on whether Bonnar has agreed.
Coleman (15-9, 6-4 UFC) is a legendary wrestler and one of the most feared competitors of the UFC's early days, winning single-night tournaments and both UFC 10 and UFC 11. Since then, Coleman found mixed success in Japan with Pride, winning the 2000 heavyweight GP, but then struggling against younger, more talented fighters like Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. "The Hammer" was scheduled to make his UFC comeback last August against fellow wrestling standout and current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, but suffered an injury that sidelined him until January of this year where he took on Mauricio Shogun Rua at UFC 93. In a sloppy, lackluster fight that saw both competitors tire early, a game Coleman eventually succumbed to strikes from Rua in the third round.
Bonnar (11-5, 5-4 UFC) is a boxer and a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under the late Carlson Gracie, Sr., who found fame on the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter, mostly for his war with Forrest Griffin on the show's finale that led to both being given UFC contracts despite Griffin's victory. After TUF, Bonnar was a heralded prospect after winning his next three fights against Sam Hoger, James Irvin, and Keith Jardine, but a suspension for steroid use following another decision loss to Forrest Griffin and nagging injuries set him back for nearly a year. Since returning in mid-2007, Bonnar has gone 2-1, defeating the likes of Mike Nickels and Eric Schafer, but dropping a decision to talented prospect Jon Jones at January's UFC 94.

Watching Bonnar vs Jones
And seeing Bonnar get absolute destroyed via wrestling. Let me be the first to say i’ve got Coleman here.

Please.
Jones is able to walk around the block without becoming gassed.
Coleman is Mickey Rourke.

Um Jones gassed tooling Bonnar all over the place halfway through the 2nd
Or did you forget that part?

Walking around the block is a tad bit different than tossing around a 205+ man. Still he does need some work on his cardio.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

Jones gets winded, Coleman turns purple.

LOL. Jones winded in at the end of the 2nd Round, not the end of the 2nd Minute.

Coleman and Shamrock should start there own promotion and every six months fight each other in there garages. Who cares they need to hang it up.

I know Dana has said he will never cut Stephan because he loves him as if he was hid child and owes him everything but man would it look bad if Stephan lost to Coleman.

Honestly, as bad as this might sound… I really hope Coleman loses, and tests positive for steriods.
I don’t want him to test positive for to make his name look bad, I just don’t want to see him fighting at the age he is fighting at, and end up ruining his life down the road 15 years from now.
I give Mark all the love in the world for STILL going out there and doing what he does, but man… Its tough to watch now and days.

Lord I never thought I would say this but I’ve got more respect for Coleman than I do for Ken Shamrock at this point. As long as the UFC keeps giving him fights then I am fine with him going forward(hopefully he is saving his money this time around) what will be sad is if he ends up doing Wargods shows after his last UFC run is over.
Mark Coleman is actually younger than Randy Couture and people don’t gripe about him still fighting “at his age”(although I think he’s on his last run too). It’s the embarrassing yourself like Shamrock has faded in to that is bad not guys fighting into their 40’s.

Gee, I wonder why?
What a fool Ken Shamrock is. Granted, he didn’t know at the time he would be fighting Lashley at the end of March, but I guarantee he would have made more money on that fight than he did fighting Haystacks Calhoun. Like your steroids into the tester’s cup, you’ve pissed yet another payday away, Kenny Kilpatrick.

The thing is age isn’t the issue it’s level of performance. Shamrock’s is dried up, Coleman is fading and Randy is still at a high level. When Coleman starts fighting Fatty McFattersons at regional shows then he is done too but I’ve got no problem with the guy trying to put one last UFC run together.

They should have booked Thiago Silva/Stephan Bonnar….both lost at UFC 94. A win over Silva does more for Bonnar than a win over Coleman.

Woulda been a good fight, but I suspect they want to throw Bonnar a freebie and get somebody some momentum out of beating Coleman. And Coleman could probably use the cash too.

You're assuming
That Bonnar is gonna win. I’m not, quite the opposite considering how horribly Bonnar got tooled wrestling last time. He got absolutely embarrassed against Jones. I believe the basketball term is “posterized.”

If Bonnar can avoid being knocked out for the first fifteen seconds...
..against Coleman, he wins.

Difference is Jones is young and talented, Mark should be in a rest home.

Considering that Coleman gassed after the first couple of minutes against Shogun and that Bonnar was still coming hard in the third against Jones, I am less than convinced.

If Coleman gets Bonnar down
Bonnar will stay on the ground

In the first round, absolutely, but I don’t think Coleman can finish there. And in later rounds, I don’t see Bonnar being stuck under Coleman’s dead weight for five minutes.

If Coleman can wrestle Bonnar from the top
His gas tank will last him a long time.

Hey now that Coleman made a little cash off the Shogun fight maybe he’ll be able to actually have a training camp for this one.

if bonnar loses this one… he will never ever ever get back on a main card.. he will be prelimmed for life
by dbcb on Mar 12, 2009 2:40 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
And if he wins, he gets absolutely no closer to main event status.
Bad move if he signs on to this circus.

shogun beat coleman and ended up in a co-main event

And everyone but Dana White and Shogun's mom thinks that's stupid.
Rua as a main event and Fitch on the undercard… we’re closer to Don King than we’d all like to think.

Honestly I think Bonnar finishes him in one round, thus raising more questions about Shogun.

After Chuck KO’s Shogun in the 1st round next month we’ll have even more answers on Shogun..

Here's what Dana should do with Coleman.
Have him fight Dan Severn or Kimo. Make it a sideshow and don’t even pretend it’s for reals. Call it the ‘old-timers league’ and put it on the undercard as a bonus for folks who show up early.

Coleman (hopefully) will take the 60k he mae and put it to good use with real preparation for this fight.

I’m hoping he saves it and uses it well, I fear him blowing it on a training camp and then he loses anyway. Sad.
