Quote of the Day 2: Chase Beebe Had No Idea

Chase-beebe_medium

I think I was fighting wrong. I didn’t train for 10 minutes. I wasn’t aware it was a 10-minute first round, so I was kinda’ gassing a little bit. I fought hard, you know, just … circumstances took me out of the fight.

I really have no excuses. My knee was feeling alright. Obviously, it hindered my training camp a little bit, but I still should have been prepared for this fight. It was feeling good enough to perform. I can’t really use it as an excuse. It held up on me. I think I just need to fight harder next time.

Chase Beebe talking about his loss at DREAM.7.

In other Chase Beebe news, Fightticker reports that Marcello Foran of UWC is pursuing legal remedies against Beebe for his no show at UWC: Man "O" War.

Wow. Not knowing you are going to be fighting a ten minute first round is a monumental oversight.

Yeah, how is this possible?

Pride had 10 min rounds, Dream still has 10 min rounds, they’re not secret. Doesn’t he have access to youtube or wikipedia?

I get the sense that a lot of American fighters don’t pay any attention to the international scene at all. The reverse is probably true to an extent as well.

(Which is not to say I fault them – they’ve got to worry about the guys they’re competing against in their own promotions, training camps, operating their schools/gyms/etc. This is where a fighter’s camp or manager should have been looking out for him.)

Some of them don’t really follow it at all. Then, amazingly, some of them like King Mo seem to be super-hardcore MMA fans who could talk forever about fight history and stuff like that. His technical dissection of Lyoto Machida’s fighting style on one of those sherdog shows was surreal to listen to. Jon Jones is another example, he said he watches MMA videos obsessively.

King Mo is one of the good guys.

Mo is awesome

Especially so now that he figured out how to use his computer and post on the UG. Though I don’t post there I can rely on Smoogy to interview him there if he turns up.

This is off-topic, but I’d very interested in that King Mo interview where he dissects Lyoto’s game. Think you could post a transcript?

That’s what I’m saying. You really don’t have to be a student of the Japanese MMA scene to obtain the basic information about the fight you’re going to be involved in.

Who would you rather fight injured: an 0-0 wrestler for big money and a shot at a major championship or a tough, TOUGH guy for probably little money and a mean nothing championship?

Don’t get me wrong – don’t want a fighter bashing ban for this – he was a dickface for what he did to the UWC promoters and fans, but this guy needed the most money the fastest way possible because of his knee. In a sport that’s so “for the fighters”, it’s really sad to see such a backlash against him for trying to ensure his own financial well being.

If I were running the UWC, I wouldn’t let this slide, either. Beebe very much put in jeopardy their event. Apparently, he gave them practically no notice as to his intentions. It might have been possible to work something out with a couple of weeks notice; I don’t know. Beebe really didn’t give the UWC a chance. He put them in an unenviable position by signing a contract, and then failing to show up at all.

by Cannon Jacques on Mar 11, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the backlash isn’t because of what he did but how he went about it. Chasing the bigger money and better opporunity is one thing, blowing off a contracted event last minute instead of letting them know ahead of time is another.

by who me on Mar 11, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions

This. I don’t think UWC would have gotten crazy about him having to drop out. I mean if he’s injured take the flight, get a free doctors visit. and a good show.

Even if he was faking it UWC couldn’t do to much if he doesn’t want to fight and lets them know. Just let everybody including your opponent know that your injured before the fight. Opponent goes after your “knee” you tap as soon as anything gets close. Shoot you can pull the full out Royce Gracie towel throw and it might be better than what went down.

To think, if he’d actually shown up and fought at UWC, that would have been a far better excuse for losing at Dream. People would give him the benefit of the doubt that two fights just two weeks apart was just too ambitious, and he’d at least get props for having fighting spirit. If he’d backed out of the UWC event as soon as he got booked for Dream a few months ago, sure he’d have pissed people off, but he could have worked out an arrangement with them that he’d do a fight for them later on, and there’d have been no fuss. Or if he didn’t work something out, at least UWC would have had plenty of time to find another main event, and long before tickets went on sale. Meanwhile people would have understood that he has to consider his own career and not pass up a potentially big payday if he’d have advanced far in the tournament.

As it is now, he just looks dumb, selfish, cowardly, and overrated, all at once. He’s going to have a lot more trouble getting smaller promoters to trust him, and the WEC isn’t going to want him back until he racks up a few consecutive wins now. If Strikeforce is interested, they’re pretty much free to lowball him. I almost feel sorry for him, but he brought it on himself.

by Chromium on Mar 10, 2009 11:36 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t feel sorry for the guy at all. Big risks either result in big reward or big failure. It’s pretty safe to say Chase Bebe is a BIG FAILURE.

by N. Rodriguez on Mar 11, 2009 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

nice.

As to this, that’s just stupid. Someone in that camp needs to know the rules of the fight their fighter is fighting in.

Did he also not know the rules regarding elbows and knees/kicks to a grounded opponent?

"You’re going to see someone’s face get smashed; I guarantee it. You know, I got nothing but respect when I looked him in the eyes, but come tomorrow in [the ring], I’m gonna be looking at his chin."

When Beebe originally said this line at the pre-fight presser, the day before Dream 7, he said “but come tomorrow in the cage…”

Guess he also wasn’t aware that Dream happens in a ring.

Beebe's Ignorance

I don’t find it hard to believe that Beebe had no idea that DREAM had 10 minute opening rounds and that their fights are contested in a ring. We’re talking about a collegiate wrestler who probably got into MMA as a way to get paid doing something relatively similar to wrestling, as opposed to office work or something along those lines. I think it’s entirely plausible for him to have never seen a PRIDE or a DREAM fight prior to the one in which he competed.

Still, you’d think maybe he’d have paid attention during the rules meeting at the very least.

He’s been fighting for nearly 4 years at a fairly high level (he was a WEC champion). You would think at that level if your going to go into a training camp for a major event that you or your manager or your coaches would of at least done the basic research into what you were getting involved in. Not knowing that when they signed for the fight is understandable not knowing the basic information after you have put in the work to prepare for the fight is pretty odd.

by who me on Mar 11, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I think this and the UWC incident just proves that the guy needs to surround himself with better people.

Even if you have no problem with Beebee telling UWC, “suck it, I have to fight in dream” you have to agree that the situation was handled terribly. That, plus something as simple as not knowing the rulesto a fight are two major screwups in a very short amount of time.

by Phildo on Mar 11, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t he also pull a Tim Sylvia with the WEC and drop out of the promotion for the Dream show thinking he could come back later or was that just his story?

by who me on Mar 11, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I always had a feeling Beebe bailing on UWC was related to his fighting in DREAM and was really unfair to UWC and the fans. I applaud Foran for his statement and his plans to take legal action against Beebe, once again he is showing a solid commitment to MMA and it’s fans in the DC area. And as Foran suggests at the end, "Who knows maybe Chase Beebe will meet Mike Easton in the UWC one day!"

I’ve been wondering why this wasn’t mentioned before. If you back out on a contractual obligation, you’re apt to get dragged into court. My assumption would be that UWC doesn’t have super-deep pockets to litigate every little pissant that screws them around, but I think they could make an exception/example here so that people have that fear in the back of their minds for the future.

Reminds me of Mitsuhiro Ishida

Didn’t know he was going to be fighting outdoors at the Strikeforce: Playboy Mansion II card. He thought he was going to be fighting in a really big house. Of course unlike Beebe he has good showings whether it’s for the entirety of a round or for card he might headline.
