Quote of the Day: Tim Sylvia
"I’m jumping in the deep end," he chuckled. "I never have (done things half way). Look at the heavyweight (MMA) division; I’ve fought about seven of the Top 10. So I might as well jump right in there and fight a guy that’s ranked in the Top 20 in the world."
-- Tim Sylvia describes his upcoming boxing match against 47-year-old Ray Mercer to MMA Weekly.

Did we just go back in time 15 to 20 years?
When Ray Mercer was top 20? Because I got some sporting events to bet on. And I’m going to buy some Google stock.

This statement so does not even deserve a response,
but I guess he is promoting the fight to up his money. I would be fine if he made the move to boxing permanent.
Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.
[edit] Kickboxing career
Continuing to seek a fighting career, Mercer opted to travel to Japan and challenged Musashi in the kickboxing combat sport K-1 on June 6, 2004. He was knocked down in the first round and went on to lose via unanimous decision. On March 19, 2005, he had one more K-1 bout against Remy Bonjasky, to whom he lost via KO after being caught with a single high kick in the beginning of the first round. That was Bonjaskys only kick in the fight, and he didnt punch even once. As Mercer put it, “I got the shit kicked out of me”.
The article does not do the Bonjasky fight justice. Mercer didn’t even get KO’ed or knocked down by the high kick. He basically just shook his head and refused to fight anymore.
Here is the Mercer v Bonjasky clip-about 4 mins in

Ow. Easiest W Bonjasky ever picked up.
Aside from that, Mercer… I’m really lost for words. I could have done that – and I haven’t got an iota of training in any striking system. Hell, I think just about anyone could have gone in there, taken one headkick from Bonjasky and called it quits.
It’s as if Mercer didn’t know he was going to get kicked.

Also...
boxrec’s rankings are whack. The site is great but the formula for rankings needs significant tweaking..especially once you get past the first 10 or so fighters in a weight class. I don’t think Mercer even rates that high.

To be honest I wouldn’t know about boxrec rankings being bad, I aint a huge boxing fan more of a casual one so i’ll take you’re word for it. One thing we can all agree on though is that Mercer isn’t anywhere near the top 20 and anyone being ranked as the 108th in anything is never a good sign.
Hey at least they’re not ranking Shinya Aoki as the number 1 Lightweight in the world, that’d be my definiton of whack rankings.

You guys are assuming Tim is talking about Mercer’s boxing ranking. He’s actually referring to Mercer’s Washed Up but Pathetically Active Athlete Ranking:
1. Ricky Henderson
2. Mike Piazza
3. Shaun Alexander
4. Randy Johnson
5. Sammy Sosa
6. Steve Francis
7. Roy Jones Jr.
8. Sergei Fedorov
9. Marvin Harrison
10. Ken Shamrock
….
19. Ray Mercer
8. Sergei Fedorov
Sergei Federov is actually an important piece of the puzzle in Washington. He’s been great for penalty killing, experience and a good elder statesman for all of the young Russian players. A lot has been said for how Federov’s presence and leadership has been integral to the development of the Russians on the team.
So let’s not put Sergei in there with these bums.
I am the bastard love child of Junie Browning and Diamond Dave Kaplan.
Um… good effort, I guess.

Randy Johnson
Is still a reasonably productive member of a starting rotation.
Just to continue killing your joke… ;)

You must be a Giants fan to be sniffing that crack. Good luck with Randy, he’s probably the 10th youngest guy on the Giants roster.
The Giants suck, but Johnson is still productive.

Ray Mercer use to be one bad mofo. any man who breaks his jaw and continues to fight and win a boxing match is all right with me. and hes a known steroid user which means he should fit right in with Timmy and his recent opponents(yes i mean Fedor).
If Fedor was taking the same roids as his protege he would have popped hot too. Stanozolol stays in your system for nearly a year. Single stupidest roid you could possibly take to compete in any event with drug testing.
