WEC 39: Brown vs. Garcia Live Results and Commentary

As with every major show we'll be here to bring you live results and commentary on WEC 39 Brown vs. Garcia. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Versus broadcast at 9pm ET so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
So again, join me for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.
It's 9:00 Eastern and the show is getting started. First fight up shortly.
Big props to Baudelaire for the image.
Rob McCullough vs Marcus Hicks - Is up first and I'm really thinking Hicks is going to pull off the W here. Round 1 - Feeling out with pawing jabs to start the fight, no one really engaging yet. The crowd is turning as they've yet to engage over a minute 15 into the round. Overhand left by Hicks and he follows to a clinch. Knees in the clinch from McCullough as he has Hicks up against the cage. The ref separates them and they're back to the center of the cage. Left from Hicks lands. More boos from the crowd as they don't engage and as I type that an overhand left from Hicks lands again. Low kick from Rob now. Hicks clinches up with him again but is unable to get the takedown. Again they're restarted. Body shot by Hicks under the punch from Rob. Body kick by McCullough there. It wasn't a crowd pleaser but I give the round to Hicks 10-9. Round 2 - Low kick from Robv and Hicks drops him with a huge punch they go to the ground and Hicks grabs one of his patented guillotines and he is squeezing as Rob is fighting but McCullough gets out and is going wild throwing punches but he isn't really landing and Hicks just stands up. Low blow from Rob now and the action is halted briefly. Body kick from McCullough now. Rob is landing some more punches now but with 2 minutes left I've still got Hicks winning the round since he dropped McCullough with a punch. Hicks is fading and Rob lands a nice combination. Hicks is gassed here. Body shot by Marcus. Overhand left by Hicks lands. A flurry of punches lands and Hicks with a right hand to answer. Another overhand left lands. 10-9 Hicks in a VERY close round on my card on the strength of the knockdown/sub attempt. Round 3 - Over a minute of pawing jabs before Hicks lands a glancing left straight (he's a lefty). More of the same as we're down to half a round left in the fight. Low kick from Rob. Overhand left lands flush for Hicks. The ref threatens a "no contest" if they don't engage which is garbage as there is 90 seconds left. Hicks tries for a takedown but can't get it. Overhand left for Marcus again. Tight left hook for Hicks now. McCullough isn't doing enough in this round for me, not that Hicks is doing a lot but he's landign the flush shots every now and then with the left hand. 10-9 Hicks again and the BloodyElbow scorecard is 30-27 Hicks. Official Scorecards: 29-29, 30-27, 29-28 Rob McCullough. Rob McCullough wins by Majority Decision.
Chris Mickle vs Jose Aldo - Round 1 - Aldo looking a little wild and Mickle is throwing really wide punches. Big leg kick from Aldo now. Another very solid leg kick and then a fist to the face. Knee to the chest by Aldo and he unloads a flurry of punches as Mickle just covers up along the fence and the ref is forced to step in. It was well over 10 unanswered punches so a solid stoppage. Jose Aldo wins by TKO (Strikes), round 1.
Damacio Page vs Marcos Galvao - Round 1 - Right hand from Galvao and Page answers and now Page is unloading...absolutely UNLOADING. Galvao is down and it is a couple HUGE shots from Page and it's all over...damn that was some brutal action. Damacio Page wins by KO, round 1.
Ricardo Lamas vs Bart Palaszewski - Round 1 - Lamas looks like he is looking to slowly get into the fight as Bart is ready to go right away. Solid early leg kicks from Bart. Lamas catches one of Barts legs on a low kick and takes him down. Bart brings his legs up high looking for an arm but doesn't get anything. Legs high again and Lamas avoids a near triangle and is now standing over Bart and landing a few solid punches. Lamas jumps and Bart kicks him to the side and they're back to standing. Lamas looking for a single leg again. Bart concedes the takedown finally and tries to lock up an arm. Now Lamas stands up and throws a big flurry of punches. Bart slands up and has a mouse under his eye but he flurries with three punches to the body and one to the head. 10-9 round for Lamas. Round 2 - A few punches exchanged and Lamas clinches up. Bart with underhooks and Lamas tries for a hiptoss but it doesn't amount to anything. Bart tries to separate and throw punches but Ricardo is smothering him with the cage hump. Lamas has his back standing and manages to throw a kick to the face from behind. Lamas is trying to use the fence to tkae the back but couldn't get it. Bart with an armlock but can't finish and now Lamas is on top unloading punches again but Bart is blocking most of them. Legs high and Bart looks like he briefly had the armbar but Ricardo gets out. Three upkick combo from Bart and he stands up eating some big punches on the way. The round ends and it's been pretty much all Lamas but Palaszewski is showing great heart. 10-9 Lamas. Round 3 - Bart is looking to throw combos early. Leg kick from Bart now. Low blow from Lamas there on accident. High kick blocked from Bart. Three punch combo now and Bart looks determined to make SOMETHING happen here. A few more shots from Bart but Lamas with the takedown. It's just smothering from the top now from Ricardo. 10-9 for Lamas again and my card reads 30-27. Official scorecards - 30-27 Ricardo Lamas across the board. Ricardo Lamas wins by unanimous decision.
Mike Brown vs Leonard Garcia for the WEC Featherweight Championship - Round 1 -Garcia looks his usual slighly manic self and Brown with a HUGE overhand right which drops Garcia. Brown is on top smashing him and now has Garcia's back. Garcia is bleeding badly and is fighting off the choke. Back to Garcia's guard and Brown is pouring it on with elbows. Pass to full mount now and the arm triangle is sunk, Garcia taps out and Brown just dominated every second of that fight. Mike Brown wins by submission (head and arm triangle), round 1.

Yeah...
he did a lot of different ones for this show, I picked that one because it reminds me of shows I used to go to with good lineups of indy rock bands.

Buzzzzzed.
Can’t wait for tonight! Here’s the televised card.
Mike Thomas Brown (20-4) vs. Leonard Garcia (12-3)
Bart Palaszewski (30-11) vs. Ricardo Lamas (5-0)
Jose Aldo (13-1) vs. Chris Mickle (26-11-1)
Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus Hicks (8-1)

Really looking forward to seeing Aldo fight.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
Me too, I hope he wins just to see him hop the cage and book it into the audience again. That was one of the best celebrations evah, especially since he’d just beat the hometown fighter.
Also the rumor is he’s dropping to bantamweight after this fight. Aldo vs. Torres would be silly awesome.

I have it the same way
Some choice parlays with Garcia.
"It's like a flying knuckle sandwich." --Rogan
"And many men have eaten it." -- Goldy
Undercard
I am disappointed that we are almost guaranteed that these will be the only four fights we fans see tonight. If the fights are quick, Versus will just give us more commercials. Hope the network gets its act together. I still have a hard time swallowing that I had to watch lackluster fights like Sonnen-Filho II & Rosholt v. Osterneek, while being denied a fight of the year candidate in McCullough v. Cerrone. Less commercials, more fights, 3 hour time slot.
Picks
I like Garcia here but I think he’ll finish in the 3rd
I’m taking Lamas for the upset
Aldo by something epic
McCullough by sheer will in a close battle
parlay
I put 10 bucks on a parlay of
Hendricks
Aido
McCullough
Garcia
Wins 48 bucks if anyone feels like copying it.
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
my parlays
A $20 bet on Garcia/McCullough/Damacio Page nets $102.57.
A $20 bet on Garcia/Palaszewski/McCollough/Page/Karalexis nets $229.52.

Not many options unless I want to watch it on tape delayed.
Besides, I hope some other channel picks up the WEC, TSN clearly has purchased way too much content for itself.

True story..
Bart Palaszewski’s mom was right behind my seat at the press table at the IFL GP show that took place in Chicago. And she may be the most obnoxious crowd member ever. Amazingly shrill “GO BAAAAAAART! COME ON BAAAAAAART!!! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART!!!!” for 15 straight minutes. A guy turned around and yelled “shut up bitch!” and she shot back a “HE’S MY SOOOOOOOOOON!”

you can't get 10-9

Isaac Brock says it best:
"I know I’ve said this before; the odds of us actually playing Free Bird are…there ARE no odds. It is not going to happen. I’ll start with the first reason: we have NO idea how to play Free Bird. The second reason is: in the lovebug’s natural habitat, hearing that would just fucking kill them, wouldn’t it? You wouldn’t want that, right? He’s adorable. He is cute. Thirdly: Even if some, like, pick your deity, whoever, came down from the heavens or the hills or wherever your deity lives, and just blessed us with this vast knowledge of Free Bird and things, and we could play it backwards, sing backwards, we could do all that crazy shit, we still just wouldn’t do it. If this were the Make-a-Wish Foundation and you were gonna die in 20 minutes, just long enough to play Free Bird, we still wouldn’t play it. And here’s the end reason, the end reason is that life is just too fucking short to play or hear Free Bird. "

I could see it being both ways
I had it Hicks because at least he was trying to engage in the clinch.
AWmusic - mp3 blog on independent music..
LOL
How? How did he win?
He was crushed in Round 2… landed some alright shots in 3, but McCullough landed some as well… overall, I think Round 3 was McCullough due to the fact he was actually trying to engage, and Hicks was just backing up. Overall aggression counts for something.
Round 1 and 3 were tough to call. I think McCullough won 2 and 3 tho
Editor-in-chief of MMA-Analyst.com

Trying to engage
I saw Rob avoiding him mostly… Hicks did go for clinch/takedown attempts even if they were awful.
AWmusic - mp3 blog on independent music..
Rob stalked him the entire round, so I fail to see how that is avoidance. He did try to kick and exchange more, but yes… he didn’t try to punch much.
And the takedown attempts were half-assed at best. Just because you go for attempt doesn’t mean it’s worth anything. Rob still landed kicks and tried to exchange.
Hicks was about worthless in the second round.
Editor-in-chief of MMA-Analyst.com
by Leland Roling on Mar 1, 2009 11:18 PM EST up reply actions
Round 1 – sloppy overhand lefts and a few shots to the body by Hicks were the best punches of the round.
Round 2 – Hicks wins by dropping Rob and the submission attempt. Rob threw a lot but he didn’t really land too much significant other than the nut shot and the liver kick. I said it a lot above but a knockdown trumps flurries of punches that land to the shoulders and arms.
Round 3 – Hicks landed more sloppy overhand rights while rob landed leg kicks. Shots to the head trump shots to the legs in my book.
Contributing Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.
by Brent Brookhouse on Mar 1, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions
Are you kidding me?
How are you scoring Round 2 to Hicks? That’s the exact kind of thinking that completely screws MMA judging up. Because of the knockdown, which Rob immediately got up from, and a submission attempt, it’s Hicks’ round? Why?
Hicks got rocked a couple of times, was backing away with his hands down, clearly hurt, and got clobbered for half the round.
Third round is arguable, but 2nd round to Hicks? You’re kidding me.
Editor-in-chief of MMA-Analyst.com
by Leland Roling on Mar 1, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions
I'm really not...
He hurt Rob badly and almost finished with a choke. I think that outdoes the few shots McCullough landed and again, most of his flurrying was blocked.

every failed submission attempt is a win for the guy defending and the guy attempting gets no credit? Forcing someone to defend a submission attempt is a lot different from someone missing a punch.

depends on what happens after the guy defends the submission

If a guy is sttempting sub after sub in total control then its ring generalship. If a guy defends a submission gets up and lands a wicked kick and is completely offensive for the remainder of the round its his round.

Its because the judges miss the nuances of the grappling game, not because guys waste all their energy on futile sub attempts. It was never close to being finished
I don't think it was a futile attempt...
I think it was deep but he couldn’t get the full guard. It was a legitimate attempt to finish the fight in my book. Again, I’m fine with the fight being scored for Rob. My card gave it to Hicks but obviously my card doesn’t matter.

that in Pride that would be a boost to Hicks on “attempt to finish the fight” as he had the big knockdown and a submission attempt vs anything McCullough did. I like to use the “attempt to finish the fight” type thinking in scoring rounds. Damage also goes to Hicks on the knockdown. I didn’t see anything that puts Rob over him in that round.

In PRIDE
If that was PRIDE, Rob still wins because PRIDE usually based it on damage. While the knockdown was great, flurries like Rob was pushing on Hicks counted quite well from all the PRIDE fights I watched back in those days…
The problem is that the PRIDE context is absurd due to the fact that the non fighting in the third round wouldn’t have happened. We would likely have a prominent outcome. Yellow cards would have flown.

McCullough’s few shots that landed visibly hurt Hicks to the point where he was backing up, hands down, etc.
While not all of McCullough’s shot landed, he still put the hurt on Hicks for the final half of the round, and it was obvious that Hicks was hurt from the shots. While you may be right that not many of them landed, he still landed.
He also controlled that entire part of the round while the knockdown and subsequent attempt to get up was instant. The failed choke was a good attempt, but Rob was fighting out of it the majority of the time. Depending on how a judge scores that, I still see Rob winning the round.

Rob won that round with a great kick to Hicks' liver and an end of the round flurry.

Knockdown > liver kick
that’s just the way I saw it.

And let me be clear...
I don’t think Hicks was “Screwed” I don’t think either guy went balls out trying to win that fight. Just saying…the way I scored it (and it sounds like Nate also) was for Hicks.

If you ask me, a liver kick late in the round is worth more than a knocjdown early in the round. (as far as the judging is concerned)
I don't see how that makes sense...
every second of the fight is scored the same as every other second. 0:30 left in the round isn’t worth more than 4:49

To be honest, it depends on the judge.
I couldn’t begin to tell you how Cecil Peoples scores anything. For all we know, talking to fighters backstage could have weight with him.

Cecil is a blast...
reffing or judging he is just going to do things however he has in his head at that moment.

Cecil isn’t a terrible referee, but his judging is just… I don’t get it. He’ll have one fight in which I think he did a good job, then 5 fights that are horrible. I don’t get it.

You’ve watched enough boxing to see how fighters are able to steal a round by saving their best for the final seconds though.

I have...
but I still don’t like it.

Decent win...
Why the hell did you parlay Aldo? I mean, do any of you guys know what your doing? I understand the concept you are trying, but adding someone in the parlay at -800 is a bad idea. It’s VERY little additional money in a parlay.
It would have been nice had you parlay Brown, McCullough, and ANY OTHER WINNER. Much more of a payout.
Other than that, still nicely done.

Agreed...
on the adding a big favorite to a parlay. The Risk/Reward is very skewed. A lucky punch and you lose it all…an expected performance and you barely gain anything. But hey..the guy won so I guess it’s a case of “no harm no foul”
