Bloody Elbow Exclusive: John Dodson vs. Jose Villarisco at UWC 5: Man O' War

Some of you have emailed me asking me to stop shilling. I hear your requests and take them to heart. Your prayers will be answered. However, I have a personal investment in this fight beyond my involvement with UWC.

Jose Villarisco was my very first Thai boxing instructor when I knew nothing about the art of eight limbs and was a confused student at Lloyd Irvin's school in Camps Springs, Maryland. He is one of the most patient, gifted and technically sound Thai boxers I've ever had the pleasure to learn under. What really amazed me about Jose was that he and I have completely different body types, yet he was always able to give me helpful advice to improve my fundamentals when starting out (not to mention I am left-handed and he is not). His exhaustive technical prowess  always amazed me and hearing other fighters who trained with him talk about his ability gave me confidence I was learning under the right teacher. I was only able to work under him for less than a year, but it was very rewarding and specific pieces of advice he offered me have cemented themselves in my thoughts to this day.

But he faces an extremely tough test in John Dodson. The Greg Jackson-trained fighter is not only a fantastic, experienced, highly athletic, unpredictable pugilist, he is also out for blood. His last fight against Mike Easton was extremely controversial and though he was fighting Easton at a catch weight of 132lbs, many believe Dodson was the rightful winner of their bout in October. Dodson's record may appear spotty, but he has faced seriously tough competition and proven himself to be a credible challenger to anyone at flyweight or even bantamweight (when your pro debut is against Yasuhiro Urushitani and you go the distance, that says quite a bit). To say Jose has his work cut out for him in professional MMA debut would be an understatement.

So, I ask that you take a look at the video and hopefully tune in to see the fight on February 21st. It's exciting to watch the development of the flyweight class in modern MMA not just under the WEC banner, but at prominent regional shows like UWC.

Disclosure: I am an employee of UWC, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I would like to point out, though, that I desperately want MMA to be successful in Washington, D.C. I am fortunate enough to have resources to potentially affect that growth and success, so I choose to make use of them. I have witnessed the development on MMA in DC since 2004 and, by far, the UWC is our best hope for having a meaningful professional organization call DC home. My goal is to grow MMA in this area and in the UWC, I have found a product that has the capability to do it well.

Full press release after the jump.

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Ultimate Warrior Challenge (UWC) announced today the launch of its Flyweight Division (125lbs) with a feature fight between John “The Magician” Dodson and Jose “The Pistol” Villarisco at UWC 5: Man “O” War on February 21, 2009 at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, VA.

John “The Magician” Dodson (6-4) fights out of Greg Jackson’s legendary MMA camp in Albuquerque, N.M. A returning UWC veteran, Dodson is widely considered one of the most entertaining and imaginative MMA fighters at any weight. A two-time state high school wrestling champion in New Mexico, Dodson took top bantamweight contender Mike Easton to a split decision at UWC 4: Confrontation in October.  Dodson has been featured on the Versus Network’s TapouT mixed martial arts reality show.

Jose “The Pistol” Villarisco (0-0) is a champion kickboxer and submission grappler who is making his pro debut at UWC 5: Man “O” War. Villarisco trains with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Lloyd Irvin and UFC Fighter Brandon "The Truth" Vera as part of Team Lloyd Irvin in Camp Springs, MD. A three-time WKA Muay Thai national champion and Virginia State Kickboxing champion, Jose is also a respected grappler with titles from the NAGA world championships and Grapplers Quest and a jiu jitsu purple belt under Lloyd Irvin.

“I’m thrilled to be putting on this fight,” said UWC CEO S. Marcello Foran. “MMA fans who’ve had the opportunity to see flyweight fights know that there’s just nothing comparable to the speed and skill you can see on display in a 125 lb. fight. No matter who wins this fight, the winner will have established himself as one of the top flyweight fighters in the United States.”

The card will be co-headlined by the first ever UWC bantamweight world championship fight featuring Mike “The Hulk” Easton vs Chase “The Rage” Beebe and a light heavyweight battle between Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt vs Jamal “The Suit” Patterson.

UWC 5: MAN "O" WAR will be held Saturday February 21, 2009 at the George Mason University Patriot Center Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. The event will feature a total of ten fights. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the first fight is at 7:30pm. Tickets for the event will be available via Ticketmaster. For more information, visit www.uwcmma.com.

Why are people getting pissy if you’re advertising an MMA org on an MMA website? It’s a free stream on Sherdog, it promotes regional MMA, and gives exposure to rising stars. What’s not to love?

Well, I understand it to an extent. There is something contradictory about blogging and entanglements. And in terms of delivering quality content, whatever shilling a writer does should be kept to an absolute minimum (along with disclosures). But as I state in my disclosure, I want MMA to succeed in DC. And prior to UWC I have seen MMA shows fail miserably over and over again despite the region being chalk full of talent. Ultimately, I ask myself, “Who among us wouldn’t want MMA to thrive in their hometown?” As long as I can strike a decent balance and help move the sport along, I’ll sleep well at night.

The question is, if they get evil and shady, would you call that shit out? That is where the conflict is. At the end of the day though, no one care if a small time org is shady. They will go under quickly and quietly without you reporting on it.

You admit upfront you work for them, and unless it turns out they commit war crimes to fund their events, I don’t see a major conflict of interest. Gimme more MMA! Gimme gimme gimme!

Keep Pluggin Away Luke...

I had never heard of the UWC until you guys started publicizing them, and i will no doubt be watching the stream on Sherdog. As long as you reserve front page promotion for other regional MMA orgs as well, and continue to promote UWC in a professional manor, there should never be an issue. I mean really, who wants to hear about the UFC all day?

Those are some really well produced hype videos. Hell, I’m actually excited about this.

As a side note, what is up with Marcello’s pseudo-goatee?

Is it me...

or does Marcello seem like he could definitely sell you a used car?

by nitro on Feb 10, 2009 3:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wait, Pro debut vs. Dodson? At first glance it looks like they are giving Dodson a W after that questionable home town judging for the Easton fight. He goes from fighting Easton up at 135 and losing to going down to his natural weight and fighting a guy making his MMA debut. So whats the deal Luke? Is Villarisco for real? Is he a muy thai instructor at camp Lloyd Irvin? Have you rolled with him? Whats his game?

Also Marcello should be in the hype films less. His hype seems forced. He is not as comfortable and it shows. And if I may say something critical about your hype, don’t tell me what they are not as in “these are not no name guys that need a work out”. I blame it on editing, but that is the close of the peice. kind of struck me as strange to close with that. And no mention that flyweight is under repped in the US and these guys are some of the best. But I loved the music in the begining. Its like something out of The Cable Guy when he went to medieval times.

I don’t think they are setting up Villarisco for the kill. For sure, Dodson is the favorite here, but Villarisco is very talented. His kickboxing skills are sick, he’s got awesome power and he’s a purple belt in BJJ under Lloyd Irvin. I have rolled with him, but it was a while ago: like, almost two years at this point. It wouldn’t be fair or accurate of me to say what his abilities are now given that I rolled with him, so my info is based on observation and what other fighters in his camp tell me.

My sense is that TLI believes Villarisco is a credible challenger to Dodson. Clearly Dodson’s got a lot going in his favor, but I don’t think this is some sort of lamb-to-slaughter scenario.

by Luke Thomas on Feb 10, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Is he a muay thai fighter mainly? Dodson seemed to think Villarisco would try to take it to the ground, but given Villarisco talk about someone is going to get KOed I would tend to think he would want to stand. Is his main strength muay thai and striking in general?

by szucconi on Feb 10, 2009 10:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Villarisco is for sure a muay Thai fighter, yes. Like any MMA guy he’s got skills all the way around, but his strong suit is striking.

Some of you have emailed me asking me to stop shilling.

To all those complaining about the hyping of what should be a great fight card:

Shut up.

Seriously, if these types of posts bother you, rather than whining like small girls, here’s what you should do: Ignore the post. If you don’t want to see the hype video, don’t watch the video. It’s really that simple.

Some folks, however, aren’t assholes. I am not one of those people, but UWC does interest me, and I hope they use every promotional avenue available to them to ensure their continued success. That’s just smart business; something about which I’ve noticed too many folks have little knowledge.
