UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 17 - Jeremy Stephens vs. Joe Lauzon - Live Results and Commentary

As always we here at BloodyElbow have your back with the best Live Results and Commentary around for tonight's UFC: Ultimate Fight Night 17 card.  Starting with the broadcast starting on Spike TV I'll be here to provide live round by round action and insight.

As with every other live thread I do ask that you adhere to the golden rule:  NO UNDERCARD SPOILERS!  That means no insight into any action that happened earlier and absolutely no results.  Unless the broadcast ends or an undercard fight is shown on TV it is off limits.  I am also adding a special one thread only rule:  NO GREASING TALK!  I'm not going to have this card get overshaddowed by the greasing thing and I'm not going to lose control of the comments to yet another Vaseline debate.

So make BloodyElbow your home tonight and share your thoughts on the show in the comments.

And on a side note...huge props to Baudelaire for the live thread image tonight.  Awesome work my friend.

The broadcast is about to start...it's time for some fights ya'll!

Anthony Johnson vs. Luigi Fioravanti - Up first we're gonna have a hell of an explosive scrap.  Round 1 - Johnson is immediately pushing forward.  Right hook glances for Luigi.  High kick misses for Johnson.  Luigi with a leg kick now.  It's a bit of a slow fight and you can hear some scattered boos from the crowd.  High kick is blocked by Fioravanti now.  Two punches land in succession for Luigi now. Johnson is landing some crushing low kicks now...it's always something new in his game every time out.  Every time Fioravanti engages he eats a kick right to the lead leg.  Luigi shoots and Johnson stuffs it well.  Knee to the body from Luigi lands directly to the cup, hard.  They restart and touch gloves.  Left hand lands to Johnson's face but he lands one in return.  Right hand hurts Luigi badly and he drops for a second.  Johnson follows up and drops him again.  This time AJ pounces and pounds him out, forcing a stop in the action.  Anthony Johnson wins by TKO (strikes), Round 1.

Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer - Truly an interesting fight here and one that could go either way.  Round 1 - High kick lands for Danzig but he eats a shot that drops him.  Neer pounces and lands some hard shots but Danzig fires a solid uppercut.  Now Danzig has recovered and is landing a couple punches of his own.  Neer is showboating a bit more than is appropriate considering he just failed to finish a guy he hurt.  Wow, Danzig lands some big shots and is moving well and Neer is hurt now and is swelling up around the eyes.  Neer throwing elbows but Danzig slips.  Three punch combination from Danzig now.Right hand lands for Mac now and Neer is cut.  Body/head combo from Mac now and he looks to have settled down since the start of the fight.  Neer is landing a little himself now.  Big overhand right for Mac puts Neer on his back and Danzig jumps into his guard.  Neer is looking for a triangle now and gets up.  Neer combination but Danzig covers up and gets out.  Neer showboating again (psst...you're losing the round bro). Very good first round comes to a close and my card has it 10-9 Danzig.  Round 2 -  Jab lands for Danzig.  Mac shoots and ends up pulling guard.  Neer is throwing huge elbows now.  Neer passes to side after landing a LOT of elbows. Neer takes Mac's back but slips off and now it's Danzig on top.  Triangle is locked in by Neer and Danzig is forced to tap out.  Josh Neer wins by submission (triangle choke), round 2.

Cain Velasquez vs. Denis Stojnic - I'm a little iffy here.  I always worry when people get so high on a prospect that he is bound to crash and burn.  I still say he crushes Stojnic here though.  Round 1 - Jab by Denis lands and then a low kick from Cain. Stojnic is going to make this fight count as he is throwing bombs.  Twice now Cain has had double underhooks and while he threw some knees to the legs he didn't get the fight to the ground. Left lands for Cain.  Another takedown attempt is stuffed.  Thai clinch and some big knees land for Velasquez and Denis gets away.  Flurry of punches hurts Stojnic but he is hanging in there.  Big body shots from the clinch by Cain now.  Stojnic throws a big overhand right that misses.  Cain is dominating this fight big time here.  Right hand staggers Denis.  Cain is pouring on the punishment and Stojnic throws a hail mary right that misses.  Velasquez is grabbing a thai clinch and throwing leg kicks from it and Denis has no answer but "throw big right hand"  That's a 10-8 round for Velasquez.  Round 2 - Cain with more leg kicks and a nice roundhouse to the body now.  Spinning backfist by Denis now misses.  Takedown by Velasquez and he is in side control now.  This is just unnecessary punishment now.  Cain is young but Stojnic has no business in there with him.  Not much to call here but a lot of punches to the face of Stojnic as they're on the ground.  The fight is stopped and there is no reason for it to go on.  The crowd boos but there was no reason to continue the fight.  How many more unanswered punches did everyone want to see?  enough to put the guy in the hospital? Cain Velasquez wins by TKO (strikes), round 2.

Matt Veach vs. Matt Grice - Undercard action! Round 1  - Veach with a nice leg kick and he is firing punches here.  Grice gets taken down.  Grice is able to get back to his feet here.  Veach is firing punches again and falls into an anaconda choke but gets out.  That seems to have made Veach realize he needs to chill a little.  Big right lands for Veach. Grice with a huge uppercut and Veach is down. Grice is crushing him on the ground now. Veach tries to stand and Grice takes him back down.  Full mount now for Grice but he gets sucked back into half.  Guillotine attempt and now Veach is on top.  Back to standing and Veach looks a bit tired.  Left hook from Grice now.  Uppercut, left hook both land for Grice.  Oh wow!  They're exchangeing and Veach lands a big shot that drops Grice.  The ref stops it quickly and I think it's a terrible stoppage.  If that was a stoppage than Grice should have won two minutes ago.  Matt Veach wins by TKO, round 1.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Joe Lauzon - It's main event time!  Round 1 - Stephens with tthe big left misses.  Lauzon pulls guard and Stephens gras the shorts to prevent a submission attempt.  Joe was looking for a sweep but coulnd't get it and they're standing against the fence.  Lauzon drops for a leglock and doesn't get it but gets a takedown into side control.  Now into the full guard.  Stephens tries to crawl up using the fence but Joe pulls him back down.  Big elbows from Lauzon and he now is in half guard.  Now full mount and Joe grabs an armbar but Stephens gets out.  Stephens is firing down now and this is a good round so far.  Slam by Jeremy and Joe tries for a guillotine but Stephens is out as the round expires.  Very close round but I'd go 10-9 Lauzon (no complaint if it were scored the other way.  Round 2 - Low kick from Stephens and now he fires a flurry of big shots.  Left lands for Joe and he gets a fireman's carry to put Stephens on his back.  Lauzon passes to side now.  The crowd is upset with the ground work here.  North South now and then over to the other side.  Elbows now from Joe and he gets full mount.  Big elbows now and Stephens gives up his back.  Hooks sunk in for Lauzon but Stephens turns on top and is in Lauzon's guard.  Stephens puts him into the cageand is landing some elbows.  Lauzon has a cut on his forehead. Lauzon is cut on his forehead.  Lauzon reverses and is back on top in side control.  Mount again and back to side control. Full mount again and an armbar from Joe and Stephens has to tap.  Joe Lauzon wins by submission (armbar), round 2.

I think its just a pre-emptive strike to get all the focus and attention on the event. I’ll be bummed out too if this thread turns into a greasegate thread. Cause at the moment, I don’t have access to fight night braodcast.

Yeah...

that’s really all it is. if they bring it up on the broadcast people are welcome to say something about what is said on the broadcast. I just don’t want every time someone goes for a submission there to be a Vaseline comment. This week has shown that pretty much any thread can quickly get turned into a “greasegate” thread if we wanted it to be or not. I just think the fights deserve our attention…

Anybody else hear rumors that Michael Phelps greased in Beijing too make him more slippery in the water?

by !claw on Feb 7, 2009 5:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That’s somewhat true. The special swimsuits he wore were engineered to have lower friction in the water. That, plus other technologies and design differences, is what caused so many swimming records to fall. I still say Mark Spitz, who swam with store-bought trunks, chest hair, and a porn-stache, is the superior athlete.

by themachiavellian on Feb 7, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Chest hairs and porn-stache almost have the same effect as the shark suit, just a bit less efficient.. I wonder how Phelps would compare without his gear though..

by Johann on Feb 7, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn’t hair increase the friction, while the sharksuit decreases it, which is why they shave their bodies nowadays?

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. -Samuel Beckett

by themachiavellian on Feb 7, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats what they thought before, shaving led to more skin contact with water, thus more friction. The shark skin works by trapping small air bubbles in its vey tiny grooves which leads to having less friction. And chest hairs and porn-staches works in almost the same way, it traps air bubbles that causes less friction with water.

Lombardi's is the same way

I stop by there every time i’m in the city, (which isn’t often). John’s on 44th is supposed to be worth going to just for the atmosphere and the pizza is supposed to be great too. Of course every NY’er will say their borough has the best slice. At Lombardi’s make sure you get meatballs on that badboy.

Fact:

The most prominent reason why pot is illegal it was associated with blacks and Mexicans in the early 20th C, and respectable Americans would never associate themselves with such crassness.

Interestingly, alcohol and tobacco are near-useless for inducing altered states of consciousness. You’d need to smoke a cigar several feet long to enter a trance (Aztecs did it).

by themachiavellian on Feb 7, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also

tobacco companies pumped large amounts of money into government lobbying to make sure it stayed illegal too. If pot was everywhere… How many people would stop smoking cigarettes. For the life of me I really don’t get as addicted to tobacco as I do to the oral fixation of lifting a cigarette or a joint up to lips.

It's a money issue

now. The only way the government will likely legalize it if there is some way for them to tax it.

Granted the government loses money on incarcerating people for possession but yeah unless you can figure a way to put more money in their pockets, it’s not going to happen.

The US economy is suffering.
People use pot as relief from suffering.
The gov’t can legalize and tax pot to help boost the economy.

I wish it was that easy

Pretty hard to tax a dealer, it’s likely going to be more of a slow process. Hopefully medical marijuana is more widely accepted and for now that would be a pay for the government to profit….

William Randolph Hearst.

The 1937 Marihuana Tax Act was primarily designed to make hemp illegal, paving the way for paper to be made largely by wood pulp (via a machine and process recently invented by people with political pull and a whole shit-ton of lumber to pulverize).

Weed was an innocent bystander/convenient scapegoat. But I digress.

I recc'ed you on that

That 24 year old kid eats, sleeps, swims, shits, swims, eats, swims, shits, sleeps, day-in and day-out 360 days a year for 4 years all leading up to 1 week so a bunch of fat-fuck 40 year old losers that will never accomplish shit in their miserable little lives can live vicariously through him and feel patriotic. He works that hard to bring a little joy into their worthless little lives and then they get to self-righteously question his judgement and personal life because he had the poor judgement, not to smoke weed (you can’t prove he even did because the bong isn’t full), but to do something people might find questionable with fuckin douchebags that would take a photo and sell it to a tabloid.

WAR Phelps – If he doesn’t wanna come back in London he’s accomplished more by the time he was 24 than anybody that ever questions him could ever hope to accomplish.

I mean that really pisses me off.

Hey I know everybody here is an MMA fan and there are a precious few of us that are Boxing fans

But to any MMA fan that wants to see what is GUARANTEED to be a dynamite fight. (In boxing there are fights you can actually do that for.)

Showtime for the Darchinyan vs Arce fight. Its little guys but they both are completely offensive minded, hit like a truck, and like to win by attrition. Oh – And there is several years of bad blood brewing.

So if nothing else DVR the Showtime fights tonight you won’t be dissappointed.

I've been waiting for this fight for about 2 years now.

Going back to the fight before Darchinyan’s pounding of poor Victor Burgos… One of my sadder moments in boxing was yelling at my tv for the dumbass ref or Burgos’ POS corner to jump in and stop the fight. Even Vic didn’t wanna hit him anymore.

For the record I guess Burgos is alright now – I still haven’t seen an update on him beyond a month after that fight.

That was the punchline – there was no payoff. Movie-watching is experiencing the characters’ lives voyeuristically (sp?). However, they’re too polite to point out this fact – that nothing on screen really matters. Films that implicate the viewer as voyeur and the shallowness of the process never do well (Peeping Tom, Natural Born Killers, Man Bites Dog). Burn After Reading did it in a more intellectual manner, instead of a visceral one. Also, people associate spies with clandestine agencies running everything, and it subverted that expectation by making them all incompetent, which is an unsettling proposition. If no one is running the world, what does it matter?

I laughed the whole damn time, too.

I am very surprised

The first UFC Unleashed on Spike has shown both Andrei Arlovski and Paul Buentello. You’d think such an evil company would burn any footage that showed fighters they don’t have anymore in positive ways… weird.

by subo on Feb 7, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's just petty

I think it’s hard to devalue Andrei Arlovski’s and editing him out an entire show seems like a waste of time.

by achengy on Feb 7, 2009 7:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The show is nothing but editing – they pick what fights to show. To give them airtime despite going separate ways is nothing if not magnanimous – especially when they could run a crawl that says ‘this guy just got KTFO by Fedor Emelianenko in the first round.’

by subo on Feb 7, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m enjoying that they’re showing older fights – so many of the recent Unleashed episodes have been fights I’ve already seen. I’ve been a fan long enough for my first fights to be today’s reruns. Memories…

I think it only adds more to their viewers. With DOR leaving fans wanting to see more of their fighters, and UFC being the one with more shows, where would they go to see more of them?

by Johann on Feb 7, 2009 7:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd much rather

have the UFC work on more important things.

Besides, according to the numbers, not that many people watched DoR. And how many people are going to watch unleashed? How many people are going to put 2+2 together if they didn’t already know that fact?

Counter-programming takes much less effort and probably hurts Affliction more directly.

by Ubernoober on Feb 7, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They want both guys back

Buentello is a quality mid range HW and Andrei is still top 3-5 in the world at HW. Why not use their footage to fill time. Burying him on their undercard and keeping him on the shelf didn’t erase Andrei this won’t do anything either way.

“Befriending” isn’t quite the right world, but the pros say that you need to make the prisoner realize that the questioner is the only lifeline, and if they cooperate with the questioner, they can receive small perks, or protection for their family (whether true or false is moot). Reportedly, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed became close with his questioners.

Hulu

needs to be more of an international thing. Can’t use a lot of the great things the internet has offered…

Advertisers only care about the American audience unfortunately… speaking from experience anyway.

My favorites in the last couple years..

1. Arrested Development
2. The Office
3. 30 Rock
4. Flight Of The Conchords

(I’m just talking domestic – don’t get me started on The IT Crowd, Snuff Box, Summer Heights High / We Can Be Heroes, etc.)

and achengy – 30 Rock is closer in tone to Arrested Development than The Office. I have to say I’ve really come to appreciate Tina Fey as a writer since I started watching it – she’s wittier and hipper than most sitcom writers these days and has a very distinct tone. Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan… yeah, I could go on, but the fights are almost starting. Needless to say I throw a hearty personal rec behind it.

was killed (her kid watched her die in the car) by a drunk driver. My other cousin (10 years old) was killed by a drunk driver.

Neer gets no sympathy from me. Honestly I wouldn’t have this had someone else done it. But a guy who was willing to kill innocents and police in drunk driving chases whining about the crowd boing him…weak as hell.

Are you guys serious?

WAR FUCKING VELASQUEZ!!!

Not one of you have given him props here. He dominated this guy. Stojnic got his ass wooped and all you talk about is how he could take a beating? Wow…I say, get these bastards who dont have *ANY skill whatsoever the fuck out of my MMA and go fight Kimbo on youtube. For shame, all of you!

:P

Seriously though Velasquez kicked some ass and got some much needed Octagon time in. BROWN PRIDE FTW!

Kid Nate: I’m not expecting much from Stojnic. I hope they give him a gimme in a European UFC to make up for feeding him to Velasquez. Of course there is the proverbial puncher’s chance, but I don’t think Stojnic is the guy to KO Velasquez. Cain Velasquez by TKO in 1.

Brent Brookhouse: Barring the proverbial “lucky punch” Stojnic is going to get smashed big time here. Velasquez is young but he is pretty much the worst possible kind of opponent for a guy like Stojnic. Cain Velasquez by TKO, round 1.

Michael Rome: This is a fight put on only because they couldn’t find a legit heavyweight willing to fight Cain. Velasquez by TKO, round 1.

Cannon Jacques: Velasquez has a ton of potential. Stojnic could certainly make a name for himself with an upset, but I don’t see it happening. Velasquez via TKO, round 1.

Nick Thomas: Velasquez by whatever he wants.

To paraphrase, he is who they thought he was!

I still think it’s hilarious no one wants to fight him. Not that I blame them at all, the guy is a nightmare. I can’t wait to see him take the next step up in competition.

by Chris Nelson on Feb 8, 2009 2:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He didn't take much damage

So I’m hoping for another fight from him soon. UFC Fight Night in April? Co-Main event against Cheik Kongo?

I just thought he had a great showing. The guy looked like he was in a training session. Excellent head movement and just great all around skill.

People thought the ref just stood them up to fight again. The ref didn’t really make it clear that he had stopped the fight until he told cain it was over and he waved his arms.

(BTW, this is the only time I have EVER missed Herb Dean’s ridiculous way of stopping fights when people are taking a beating)
