2008 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Submission of the Year

SUBMISSION OF THE YEAR: Dustin Hazelett vs. Josh Burkman at UFC TUF 7 Finale
I wish the UFC employed an English play-by-play man just to hear him give Dustin Hazelett's arm bar submission over Josh Burkman the description it rightly deserves - brilliant.
The submission puts the beauty and simplicity of fundamental Brazilian jiu-jitsu on display. One needs not know a myriad of techniques to effectively apply the discipline. Hazelett's end product, an arm bar, is just that, an arm bar. The most basic of maneuvers taught to students within their first week of classes.
It's the setup to the finish that deserves all the credit. Burkman works for a takedown from the clinch, but Hazelett nullifies it with a textbook whizzer. Hazelett then, with equal parts ingenuity and athleticism, jumps into the air, performs a half jumping somersault, and wraps his leg around Burkman's head. When the action hits the floor, Hazelett crank away and gets the tap.
Outrageously, Hazelett scored another submission of the year candidates with a modified arm bar over Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91. The only thing separating him from Japan's Shinya Aoki is a mountain man beard and super happy rainbow pants.
2nd PLACE: Shinya Aoki vs. Katsuhiko Nagata at DREAM 4
3rd PLACE: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia at Afflication: Banned

Technically it wasn't actually a RNC
because of where his elbow is during the choke. It was more like a forearm choke from the back.
Gimme 1 Round!
Personally I thought Maia’s triangle-from-the-top with bonus ground and pound deserved the honours… not only was the guy getting choked out, he’s wearing punches in the face as well :)
Hazelett is a worthy winner though.
Triangle from the top is pretty common actually
Something bizarre or spectacular only should win. The Peruvian necktie was actually more of a sub of the year
Gimme 1 Round!
Except that, as a sub, it should be relatively easy to avoid (not defend: once you’re in it, you’re screwed, but avoiding the position shouldn’t be that hard). That sub had way more to do with a lack of defence.

That was most certainly the submission of the year. And giant mountain man beard always trumps magical rainbow pants.

I don’t mean at Hazelett>Aoki, I actually just mean that giant mountain man is always more awesome than magical rainbow pants. And magical rainbow pants are pretty awesome.

I think Chris was referring to the fact that Jason Black was sporting a giant mountain-man beard when Aoki subbed him.
And yet Black’s beard was still more awesome in defeat than Aoki’s pants in victory. ;-)

It’s nice to see good old-fashion controversy about whose submission is better than the Grease/Lube/Vaseline-Gate crap lately.
Do agree with this OTY – awesome, out-of-nowhere jump into the armbar.

Huh?
We’re still doing 2008 Of the Year Awards in February 2009?
What’s with the IV trickle feed on these things? Let’s get them out and over with :)

The voting did take place in January.

I think the Gogo from the top was better
but I can’t argue with this – it got my number 2. I don’t remember what my number 3 was… I think Peruvian necktie or Ishida’s armbar
Gimme 1 Round!
That's what this site is for though
And I think it was more the impact of a recent UFC champ getting wrecked in seconds by PRIDE’s champ.

Then its a total misunderstanding of what was being asked.
It wasn’t who got submitted, or by who? It was the best submission and there were a metric ton better submissions than Fedor’s rather sloppy RNC on Timma! Unless he wanted to cause lasting harm to Tim, then putting your forearm across a guys throat is the best way to do it.
That was a crazy armbar. The best part was how he didn’t really have control of the arm when he rolled over the top and used his legs to help secure his grip while simultaneously stretching his opponent out. Great hand control, and done very fast.
