Are you a sports fan, or an MMA fan, or both?
When is "I like MMA" going to be a legitimate answer to the question "What sport do you like?"At the moment when I say that, I get funny looks from people, kind of like, "yeah, okay, but I mean a real sport, like soccer or baseball."
As an English teacher in Japan, it's a question I get asked all the time. I used to lie and say something like "I like soccer" or "I like basketball", but then I'd be asked what team I support, and I'd start to feel bad lying through my teeth about a team I didn't give a shit about.
In reality, the only sport I like is MMA. Everything else is pretty boring to me. Sometimes I like to watch rugby or football (soccer), but only when England is playing international games (and only when they are winning).
How about you? Are you a sports fan, an MMA fan, or a fan of both? And when do you think it will be alright to simply say "I like MMA"?

Ditto, except...
I loved the Bulls throughout my childhood, but Jordan leaving and the lockout killed NBA basketball for me. I can’t even watch it anymore.

All the other sports have become about nothing. Everyone is overpaid and doesn’t care because they have enough cash for 10 lifetimes. MMA is about fighting for your life. They win because they have bills, and their kids need stuff. Its a sport you get into because you love it, not for the money. They care so much more than NBA or baseball players.
Football is ok tho.

That's a complete load
For every professional athlete that doesn’t care about the game, there are dozens who do care. You go tell Jamie Moyer, who pitched for 20 years before he was able to win a World Series, that he doesn’t care because he has millions in the bank.
And at this moment in time, the money MMA offers is luring in lots of collegiate wrestlers. People liked to make money. It doesn’t mean they aren’t doing something they love. If somebody was willing to pay me millions to cook and watch MMA, I wouldn’t turn them down. Sadly the market has not shifted that way…yet.
Both…
played football (QB) in college, amateuraly boxed and played basketball and soccer in HS. and baseball til 6th grade, boring sport, still watch over 150 baseball games a year, but its my least favorite major sport.
Honestly, growing up it was all NFL, College football, CFL, World League, High School Football with boxing, nascar, indycar and basketball behind it, then liked some baseball. Then after I saw the 94 world cup soccer passed baseball also when I first saw MMA which moved just below boxing on my list. Then liked MLS, started watching more golf, womens tennis, F1, soccer leagues outside of the US, international sports, even the WNBA.
I love all sports and can appriciate each and every one of them, can’t stand when people say oh Baseball is better than Boxing because of this and that, or MMA is better than auto racing, etc…each sport is different, most sports it takes a different or certain type of athlete (though athletes are atheletes), different strategies, different techniques and strength are needed, endurance, etc…
If I had to rank them though Football will always be my favorite sport and NFL my favorite league, #2 is MMA and honestly spend more time following it (searching for news) since I can just keep my TV on NFL Network all day and get my football news, MMA I spend hours online. Then I like other combat sports then probably soccer then auto-racing, college basketball, NHL, womens tennis, golf, AFL (aussie rules), NBA and multiple other sports, then baseball last…
Depending on the day of the week, I love Football or MMA the most.
Today, for example, I am enamored with the opening of free agency, so MMA is taking a back seat. Last saturday, though, the NFL could have gone bankrupt and I would not have cared.
Baseball is ok.
"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard
gotta say I’m like that alot of times as well, depending what day it is and whats going on, MMA can take over the top spot from football…
but thats not today, 7am here, still haven’t gone to sleep, been awake for 24 hours, had to follow along with the signings as they happen, just how I am, 100 million for Haynesworth and another 56 mil for D-Hall…the skins are spending early…Bart Scott to the Jets, Vikings trade for Sage, big moves are happening…Derrick Brooks having a press conference not really announcing anything also happend, ha…
Please, please, please, Ray Lewis to the Broncos.

Lewis isn’t the player he once was, but I suspect he’ll get paid like he is. So, I wouldn’t mind seeing him go to Denver.

We got lots and lots of money. Good luck with getting 1,100 out of LT this year.

And I’ll say it for you, after he get 300 yards against us, he only has 800 to go – but seriously, we have lots of money.

Broncos have been looking at JJ Arrington, Derek Ward, Jabar Gaffney and Reynaldo Hill according to NFL network about 6 hours ago when they updated Denver…my Seahawks are bringing in TJ Houshmandzadeh to talk today, hopefully we make the move….
big moves in the NFL first day of the season, winslow trade, “sources” saying Ray doesn’t want to return to b-more, a new signing by the hour, been fun…
oh and denver signed Lonnie Paxton, former Patriots long snapper, to the 2nd highest contract ever for a LS, hah…nice use of money, 5.5 mil for 5 years with 1 mil signing bonus….about as cool as when my Seahawks spent a draft pick on a LS last season…
that is the most important position on the field.
Looks like the Broncos are also losing Ramsey as their backup QB.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
For some reason, I get the feeling they will try and bring in Shawn Springs on the cheap.
And congrats to Dominique Foxworth, good player, good guy and now 28m for 4 years from Baltimore.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
We never should have let Foxworth go.
Are there any awesome safeties out there?
by Derek Suboticki on Feb 27, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
Broncos talking to Dawkins, theres a bunch of Safties out there, lots of corners also (Dre Bly is one of my favorites, Denver got rid of him obviously so he’s not going back there)….good year for FA DB’s…
Rodney Harrison, Darren Sharper, Lawyer Milloy, Jermaine Phillips, Jim Leonard and who i’de try and get Sean Jones are out there, plus a bunch of servicable starters…Broncos talking to Dawkins and Reynaldo Hill, apparently trying to get both, SS and FS respectively…
I’d kind of rather go young at the position, but Dawkins and Hill would be pretty sweet.

Well, you guys got Dawkins. Hopefully at 35 he’s ready to start declining quickly.

Hill is also official, got your two new Safeties…also got JJ Arrington, Buckhalter from the Eagles and Jabar Gaffney….Broncos making some moves…
Put in an offer on Anderson (an RFA from Houston), too.

MMA and football
as well as the occasional hockey game. Baseball only in person, never on TV.

I love watching pretty much any sport
Soccer, football, hockey, baseball…even curling. Especially curling.
The only thing I don’t enjoy watching is basketball. Way more fun to play than to watch.
Fan=Fanatical.
I would say I am fanatical (but realistic) about football and MMA and it’s components.
I love sports and have always believed they play an important part in our world and in teaching youth about competition, sportsmanship, etc…
I am way into March Madness, but I don’t sit around and watch games all season. I like some NBA, but again, just the occasional game or parts of them.
I’m over The Olympics and does the NHL still exist?
In all seriousness, sports are great, but need to be kept in perspective.
I would definitely miss MMA, the NFL and a few other events, if they weren’t around.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
I think you are contradicting yourself here. MMA is a sport. Therefore, I am a sports fan. Your poll should suggest what other sports do you watch, or do you only watch MMA.
Agree. Better topic for a poll. I`m guessing there are few golfers and figure-skaters here, but you never know…

well...
That’s kind of the point of the poll. MMA is not considered a “sport” yet, at least not by the people I converse with, or at least, not a “real” sport like football, baseball, etc.

thats weird, mma is definately considered a sport where I live…as much as boxing or any other combat sport, everyone around here isn’t a hardcore fan but knows the main fighters and all say mma passed boxing but they all barely watched boxing…but its definately considered a sport, if auto-racing, bowling, darts, billiards, etc are sports then so is mma…
Well I learned something
About America! Thanks!

I enjoy hockey, rugby, real football (soccer), lacrosse, and most combat sports, but MMA is the only one a actually follow. Everything else I’ll just glance at on the TV. And I hate American football…

It amazes me how popular soccer is with the rest of the world but people don’t even call it the right name…
j/k =D
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
funny that the word soccer was created in the U.K.
thats what I find funny, when people get so upset at Americans for calling it soccer, we didn’t invent the word, people from the country that invented the sport did…
soccer it is…
Both
Which is exactly why I feel the way I do about the business of the sport. I cannot imagine two or three NFL’s, one with Tom Brady, one Peyton Manning and one LaDanian Tomlinson. The one and only thing that has caused the astronomical growth in both revenues generated and the percentage the athletes get to take home is centralization – having all the top talent in the same place at the same time bouncing against each other.
Is there still a European basketball league? Sure – but it doesn’t sniff the NBA. Is there an Asian Tour for golf? You betcha – but it’s for guys that cannot win consistently on the PGA Tour. It’s my love for other sports (football especially), I believe, that has formed and codified my desire to see the best 20 fighters in every weight class sign with Zuffa.
by Derek Suboticki on Feb 27, 2009 1:51 PM EST reply actions
agreed, and funny that on another forum I made the EXACT same comparison using the same 3 NFL players about why I would prefer the best fighters to be in one org/promotion, whether that be UFC or whoever else, if there was one major one, or “only” one then if you wanted to fight thats where you’de be and we’d see the best against the best…
Huge fan of many sports...
I played semi-pro hockey in the Quebec juniors and in State school, so I’m a huge hockey fan, but it’s left me sour in recent years. I still watch it though.
I’m an avid Chicago Cubs fan, follow the team religiously, follow MLB religiously, huge fan and can’t wait for it to come around.
Chicago Bears fan… sob I love NFL football, and I generally follow all the teams as well.
Hate NBA, follow English Premier League soccer as a casual fan. Played soccer in college and high school.

I like lots of sports. The only two that I watch consistently are MMA and the CFL. I think what I love about them is the same thing: high level competition, generally low level of “assholeness” among the athletes, accessibility, and lack of over saturation in media. Oh, and they’re both fast, exciting, and intense.
I also watch some hockey, but being a Maple Leafs fan has taken its toll. I no longer really care about baseball; I follow the NFL only in so much as it supports my fantasy leagues; I follow basketball only in so much as it keeps my fantasty team out of the basement (finishing 11th is a win!); and I only pretend to care about other sports.
"I'm AJB and I endorse this nut-puncher."
i love all sports, even golf, tennis and nascar from time to time.#1-mma, a close#2-nfl, #3-boxing. i’m such a sports nut that ive hardly ever seen some of the great tv shows over the years (at least iv’e heard they are great) like csi,the sopranos, lost, the shield etc . too many sporting event’s to watch and mma blogging. ive never seen a single episode of american idol, no shame there.
I’ll watch most anything if it represents the north side of Chicago.
I will play my game beneath the spin light.

MMA fan only
I used to be a fan of (American) football, but the Redskins have sucked too much for too long. It’s a shame. Dan Snyder is a horrible owner.
