Dana White Is Incredulous

Dana_white_mediumAbout some of Chael Sonnen's more select remarks:

Sonnen is impressed with Maia, enough to suggest that Maia is already good enough to defeat UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Silva, who is tied for the top spot in the Yahoo! Sports MMA rankings, is nearly a deity in White’s eyes, but Sonnen told USA Today that he felt both he and Maia could defeat Silva.

"I think I’m better than Anderson and I think Demian’s better than Anderson," Sonnen was quoted as saying by the newspaper’s Sergio Non. "I think we would both beat him."

Maia said he appreciated Sonnen for including him in that view, but White was incredulous upon learning of Sonnen’s words.

He laughed and then said, "You’re [expletive] me, right?"

Assured it was no joke and that the newspaper had quoted Sonnen as saying that, White said, “Chael Sonnen really said that? And he was serious? OK. Whatever. I’ve heard everything now. More power to him, I guess.”

Believe or not, I don't think he is, Dana.

That’s amazing! Apparently Mia is so good, that he can choke Sonnen out before they even fight, cause it is clear Sonnen isn’t getting enough blood to his brain.

So. He’s saying he’s better than Dan Henderson then eh?

LOL. Imagine your boss laughing at a comment you made indicating you were better than a fellow co-worker. Hilarious.

Coming off the heels of his hiring with the company after his fighting career was brutally ended by a viscious submission at the hands of Demian Maia, Chael Sonnen has this to say:

Yea, I’m better than Bob in accounting. In fact, I think Jon and I are the two best employees on the 14th floor

Supervisor Hal was incredulous upon learning of Sonnen’s words.

He laughed and then said

He’s only been here for a week. He hasn’t even turned in any TPS reports. Is he serious?

Dana is a very put up or shut up kind of guy. I really don’t find Sonnen’s comment that he would beat Silva that crazy. Not that I think he would, but a fighter has to believe in himself. But here there is also a bit of shit talk with Sonnen pumping up Maia to be great incase he loses. It is standard pre-fight smack. “I am great, blah blah blah”

by szucconi on Feb 19, 2009 1:17 PM EST reply actions

Well, yeah, kinda sorta. But neither Sonnen or Maia are likely to walk into a title fight after this bout; it’s not like it’s a number one contenders match. And Sonnen goes beyond the normal pre-fight talk, because he actually builds up Maia (the guy he’s fighting, for all of you scoring at home) at the expense of Anderson (the champ, who he isn’t fighting). That’s not pre-fight hype. That’s nonsense.

The hype is worth it for him if he loses to Maia. He makes Maia look great pre-fight and he doesn’t look as bad when he gets stomped. Maybe he think he might lose. He is trying to talk up the fight it self to try to make it have more implacations then it really does.

Honestly, you may be right. But I just don’t credit Sonnen with that level of deceptive, strategic thinking. Reading his interview with Cage Potato, I was stunned to see that he STILL thinks that FIlho came into their last fight at 100%, when everyone and their brother can see he was… less than present. I think he’s just a little delusional.

Well it is possible. He is a Republican and he did likely vote for Matt “Stinky Skunk” Lindland. He has equally crazy thoughts on BJJ, but to each his own.

by szucconi on Feb 19, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Does Lindland actually smell, or does he get called Stinky just cause he looks like a guy who woke up in the gutter?

And I do admit that Sonnen’s comments on BJJ piss me off, since I’m a huge jiu jitsu fan; so maybe I’m biased.

Watch Lindlands WFA fight with Rampage. In the post fight interview Jackson suggested Lindland take a shower because he was a stinky skunk. It was gold. Also the fight was pretty good. Maybe smelling bad it part of Lindland’s fight game plan.

I’ll try and dig it up. Some guys just… reek. A guy at our gym, who is a pro fighter, just smells like feet no matter how clean he is. I rolled with him a while back, and he went for a gi choke on me that I defended, but that resulted in me having his gi wrapped around my face while he had my back. I almost vomited. I almost tapped to the smell. Unbelievable.

Believe or not, I don’t think he is, Dana.

You don’t think Sonnen was serious?

I do. I think he’s just delusional, and I hope Maia chokes him out in the first round.

I was saying I don’t Iole was kidding him [Dana].

Folks need to remember he trains under Lindland, delusion is part of his everyday existance.

by Lynchman on Feb 19, 2009 5:02 PM EST reply actions

This is one way to get the attention needed to have a shot at a title fight. If Chael can back up his talk, more power to him.

He’s not hired as a fight analyst, he has his career and income to think of. Sonnen’s look and demeanor are the type that gets overlooked and is hard to market. This tactic is a smart way to break through that.

I’m sure his promise to his dying Father weighs heavily here.

he promised his father the WEC belt I believe… not the UFC belt

by dbcb on Feb 19, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

It was just a belt, and he got it. At least he got it in my book. He beat Paulo and he made weight.

Dana is a fan of MMA…and often looks at things from a fan’s perspective…that’s exactly what he did here.

He is the face of ufc and as they say the face of mma. He can’t speak pubicly from a fan perspective (if “fan perspective” is speaking lighlty), that’s not pro. But I do think that even from a very professional point of view, as a promoter and match maker, sonnen’s comment was kinda funny outside whatever contexte it was taken from.
Yeah you got to hype yourself, but not too much, cause even if he KNOWS he can beat silva (who knows), considering his p4p status, it’s like saying before your first fight in the octagon: stop it right there, I’m already the champion dude, you can just give me the belt right NOW.

Just so you know...

His fight with Maia will be his fourth fight in the UFC.

I said i thought Sonnen sounded full of cr@p and i got a warning that i would get kicked off the sight? Who is monitering this site that is that sensitive? I mean come on Sonnen saying he is the best MW in the world. I think it is ok to say he sounds full of cr@p. If i can’t say that i’m done with this site.

Okay killer...

here’s the score. You had multiple comments deleted because you were in violation of the rules you agree to signing up for an account here. Then in a post where people were just told things were getting a little out of hand and to mind your manners you bust out a “he sounds full of crap” and one of our staff members (not me, mind you) gave you a warning.

If you have a problem with this, then by all means find a new site. Our house, our rules…no matter how much we sounds full of cr@p.
