Dana White Headed to Quebec to Save UFC 97
FightOpinion reports:
According to a new post at Corus Sports, there will reportedly be a meeting next week between the RACJ (which oversees the Quebec Boxing Commission) and UFC President Dana White in regards to what rules UFC would have to abide under for the April 19th event in Montreal at the Bell Centre. The report claims that this meeting will either make or break the event from taking place.
Both Jason MacDonald and Joe Ferraro are hopeful that cooler heads will prevail. The Canadian Press? Maybe not so bullish.
Richard Labbé of La Presse, which is a big French-language newspaper in Canada, seconds what the Corus Sports report claims and says that it was White (not the QBC) that asked for the meeting to save the show. La Presse quotes Réjean Thériault, who has been adamant about the QBC going back to pre-Unified rules, stating that the rules the QBC would be going back to are similar to those in Ontario (where MMA currently isn’t legislated). Thériault is insisting on no knees or elbows.
...
Thériault is also quoted as saying that ‘the old administration’ of the QBC was tolerant of the Unified Rules, but that the laws the QBC wants to enforce now are the same ones that have always been on the books. Again paraphasing him, he told La Press that if the UFC wants to run a show at the Bell Centre, they will have to follow the rules. Thériault is not publicly wavering yet on the possibility of UFC canceling the event.
The Toronto Sun has a little more on the lameness of the rules Quebec is trying to enforce:
This is a really lame situation. I wonder if Dana is learning how to say "So you wanna be a f***ing commission" in French. The Quebec regulations, which appear to have been ignored in past Quebec MMA shows, forbid elbow and knee strikes -- hitting an opponent with the bent knee or bent elbow is deemed a foul.
The rules also say that if a fighter is knocked down, the referee must send his opponent to a neutral corner. They also forbid judo-type throws -- "using any other part of the body than the hands, arms, feet or legs, to make an opponent fall."

Do these fucking idiots not realize that they already have an agreement in place for UFC 97 in Quebec and that if they want to make changes they can do it afterward?

This is ridiculous… “‘the old administration’ of the QBC was tolerant of the Unified Rules, but that the laws the QBC wants to enforce now are the same ones that have always been on the books.” The laws the QBC refer to in NO WAY disallow knee and elbow strikes, or any strike for that matter. The law is worded in such a way as each commission can allow certain kinds of strikes at their discretion. What has happened here is the incoming president just wants to throw his weight around; it’s pathetic political posturing at the most. Unfortunately his petty game may seriously cripple professional MMA in Canada.

Yea it really sounds like political grandstanding that is bound to fail in a big way. I can’t see the UFC running an event outside of the unified rules and the ones that will be losing out on money is the athletic commission and the city. Lets face it the UFC can move the whole thing to Vegas(or any number of locations) on a moments notice and still make big money off it.

They also forbid judo-type throws — “using any other part of the body than the hands, arms, feet or legs, to make an opponent fall.”
WTF? Do they expect fighters to get takedowns by just pushing the other guy over?

they could huff and they could puff and blow him over.
so does that just cancel out hip throws? technically a seoinagi is a ‘hand throw’ if my judo memory serves me right.
but how can you get rid of judo throws, elbows, and knees? “hey. this is canada, we wanna completely reform the UFC for shows here.” LAME!

Sounds about right, considering the monster business the previous UFC in Montreal did. It just doesn’t make sense to all of a sudden bring up laws that (apparently) hadn’t been enforced until now. Dana will get it done. I’m sure the show will still go on. The QBC would be stupid not to let it.

Wouldn’t be surprised. The Quebec Provincial government is the second-most corrupt in Canada (behind Alberta).

The commissioner just wanted to see his name in the sports section and try and secure a higher percentage for the commission, little does he know he may have just robbed the commission of their entire percentage as well as removing millions of dollars from the municipal economy vis a vis hotels ,restaurants, auto rentals, taxis, shops and stores etc. That said I dont think the chamber of commerce will let that happen.

Canadians need to get ahold of their politicians...
We do in America too, but srsly, you guys can make your voice heard and talk to your representatives. Let them know if they don’t support MMA and the unified rules that you WILL VOTE for the person running against them next election.
The only thing in the entire world politicians fear is losing their jobs. Period.

Some of you guys need a lesson on Canadian government
Quebec is a province of Canada. All the other provinces have nothing to do with Quebec’s elected officials.
All this “fuck the frenchies”, “stupid Canucks” stuff reflects pretty poorly on the MMA crowd.
by smoogy on Feb 14, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
please point me to any "fuck the frenchies" comments
They would be inappropriate for BE standards. As far as I’ve seen you’re the first commenter here to use the slur “canuck”.
And Dexerion’s comment seems to be entirely reasonable even if he says Canadians rather than specifying Quebecois. There are plenty of Canadian officials that need to get lined out — especially the commissioner in Ontario.

Apparently, from now on it’ll be more than just the commissioner in Ontario…
I don’t think smoogy is referring to comments made on BE exclusively, although just a few posts above, someone wrote something like “fucking french Canadians”. I’ve read similar comments being made on various MMA sites comments and I don’t like them. Being french Canadian myself, i know that some of these comments are not only ignorant, but actually hateful.
Believe me, we’re just as angry about the whole situation as anybody else.

“Take away UFC 97 from them. Simple as that. Give it to some city like Miami. Screw the Canucks.”
Canuck is not a slur necessarily. But my point was that its ignorant to blame French Canadians, Canadians in general, or any variation of the two. The only people anyone should be directing their anger at are the commission members who are being so peculiar about enforcing the rules.
I don’t consider myself particularly sensitive, but remarks like that are absolutely prejudiced. It would be like reacting to the regulation problems in NY by saying “screw those latte-sipping metrosexuals and their trailer trash country!”

By the way, there are plenty of French-Canadians outside of Quebec, just like a lot of English speaking people live in Montreal.

it might be just a joke, but in this thread there was this:
“I’m thinking Atlantic City NJ, fucking french Canadians. Anybody else think Dana looks suspiciously like Howie Mandell in this pic.” by “despisedIcon856”
again i’m not saying BE is condoning this kind of behavior, but I think i’m more susceptible to find these comments offensive and completely retarded when i find them…

Problem: the Athletic Comissioners are bureaucrats. They can’t be hired and fired just based on what the politicians want. Canada does take that whole separation of politics and bureaucracy seriously. This is in no way a political decision, nor can the politicians overly influence the decision of the commission.

Where is GSP in all of this? You’d think that being such star and from the region in question that he’d be one of the guys to go there with Dana, let alone publicly rebuking the decision.

I don’t want to see this lame ass QBC style MMA, never EVER.
“Veux-tu faire de combat, enculé?”
Lol ou plutot comme on dit chez nous, MDR!
Though I don’t know how they (you?) say it , in france we would say “veux tu te battre, enculé?” rather than “veux tu faire du combat, enculé”, it’s like saying “to do fight” instead of “to fight”. I’m always having a good time hearing french in quebec.

My guess is Dana is going to go not just to see if they can get a deal, but probably to make a threat of a major lawsuit. There are serious reliance issues here, and allowing the first show to go on no questions asked is very obvious grounds.
by Michael Rome on Feb 14, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think there has to be some sort of threat that can be made because the last show was allowed to go on.
If these are the rules as they are (and were) written, didn’t the commission do something wrong by letting GSP elbow and knee the shit out of Serra?
