Seth Petruzelli Vs. Doug Marshall at Roy Jones "March Badness"

According to Sherdog.com:

Jones said the “March Badness” undercard will feature three MMA bouts: Seth Petruzelli (10-4-0) vs. former WEC light heavyweight champion Doug Marshall (9-3-0) in a light heavyweight fight, Roy Nelson (13-3-0) vs. Jeff Monson (27-8-0) in a heavyweight bout and former collegiate/WWE wrestler Bobby Lashley against an as-yet unnamed opponent.

I've gotta say...

this really isn’t the worst possible card. Petruzelli/Marshall will probably be reasonably exciting (but sloppy..like all of Doug’s fights), Monson/Nelson is a decent enough “mid-tier” heavyweight fight and Lashley has a fairly decent “interest factor” going.

yep. Its pretty decent in my opinion..

Im curious to see what the odds are here.. Will seth’s win over kimbo make people bet and make him the favorite? And yes Lashley that interest factor, but i dont think he has it.. Well we only had 1 fight to base it on, but i really wasnt impressed.. Hopefully he improves .. He could be a major drawing factor some organization if he does well (as long as they dont kimbohype him)..

Yeah...

If I think they’re going to stand and sling fists. But if they do that Marshall has some big power in his hands. He isn’t technically sound but he can lay you out flat. If the hype off the Kimbo win bumps Petruzelli to a big favorite I’ll probably throw some money on Doug.

Agreed.

They could have definitely chosen many worse MMA matchups to put on this card. Watching

i read somewhere yesterday that the next monte cox adrenaline could have a fight between tim sylvia & RAY MERCER.

that’s just sad.

Yeah...

The #8 ranked heavyweight vs. an already somewhat punch drunk boxer well past his prime making his MMA pro debut.

Seems like a good plan

I won't PPV it...

But I may drive down to Pensacola to watch live. It will likely be a smaller venue anyways. Like 12-13K seats I’m guessing

Agreed, pretty interesting.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

I agree Brent

based just on Monson vs Nelson in front of a boxing crowd I figured this would bad, VERYYYYY BAD. But with some other styles of bouts around it, it looks much much better

Gimme 1 Round!

People in both sport’s fanbases seem to have this weird idea that the other crowd can’t possibly handle a boring fight. Boxing fans think MMA fans will freak out over a boring boxing match…MMA fans think that boxing fans will freak out over a boring MMA fight. The truth is…neither fanbase likes to be bored and both have sat through bad fights before. I don’t think this show is much different in reception from any normal boxing or MMA card. If the fights are exciting the crowd will be happy…if the fights suck the crowd will be pissed. There really isn’t any magical science to putting on a card like this.

yup pretty much

Nelson vs Monson could end up being horrible though is why I figured it would be bad. You know, Bad to ANY audience except the catch wrestling crowd maybe even them. With some different style matchups to offset that matchup this should be pretty decent

I think the event will be an utter joke at least from the boxing point of view. I am not educated enough to give any insight on the MMA fights.

I guess I’m alone in thinking this is an epic fail just waiting to happen.

It's not going to do big numbers...

but I think you’ll be surprised by the numbers it does pull. I also don’t have a huge problem with the fights on the card. BJ whatshisname on the undercard (#2 ranked cruiserweight boxer) is a scrub who has carefully protected his record. But the Jones fight has a legitimate chance of ending with either guy winning (especially if he continues blocking punches with his face) and the MMA fights are competitive and interesting at least.

Monson/Nelson could turn into an awful fight…but it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever seen.

You say “epic fail.” I say a “tad ambitious” at $35.95. The difference is one of us is trying to avoid squashing the hopes of the MMA/Boxing hybrid contingent. Let the experiment begin.

Is Jeff Monson going to be out of jail to fight Fatty McGee?

Who knows? But do people really think that fight is going to set peoples’ pants on fire? Marshall vs. Petruzelli could be entertaining, but Monson vs. Nelson has disaster written all over it.

If Fatty Warbucks throws bombs like he did against Imes, entertainment is all but guaranteed.

I mean, I’d go to this show if it was at the Patriot Center, for example. But this is basically an Art of War card.

Remember Art of War? Of all the MMA promotions that have failed over the past few years, they are one of them.

From the UG:

I just returned from the “March Badness” Press Conference for the hybrid MMA/Boxing show. Though opened to the public it was pretty empty though everything went smooth. A few key notes…

Roy Jones spoke about having MMA on the card. He was very excited about it and showed a ton of respect for the sport. He seemed to realize the significance of what they were doing with the hybrid show and the names involved.

Jeff Monson was unable to show up due to his legal issues but they were adamant that he would still be on the card. Oddly enough the promoter spoke openly about Monson’s Anarchist ways while maintaining his support for the fighter. Good stuff, glad to hear Jeff will be fighting.

Seth Petruzelli looked big considering he is fighting at a catch weight of 195. Doug Marshall was much closer to the weight and by guess I would say Seth was walking around close to 220.

Still no opponent for Bobby Lashley though it was stated that there are a number of guys trying to be his opponent and that they would choose and announce the fighter within the next few days.

This event is a huge step for MMA and I can only hope that it will be successful. Props to Roy Jones for having the balls to step up and make it happen.

They also announced that the prelims are still being worked on and will consist mostly of local Pensacola fighters.
Another thing, props to Triumph United. The few prelim fighters that were in attendance were all repping TU gear. It was nice to see that they were sponsored and oddly enough their gear outnumbered the Tapout shirts probably 4 to 1.

Also the PPV price was announced at $29.99
