25 Facts You Didn't Know About MMA
Here's some more guys. If you have any you would like to add, please send me a message and if I get enough, I'll make a third.
In a correction from the first article, Big Nog actually has the most fights in PRIDE history. I apologize for the error.
1) The UFC 155lb champion has never lost a title fight. Jens Pulver was stripped due to a contract disput, Sean Sherk was stripped because of steroids and BJ Penn is the current champion.
2) Tank Abbott was KO'ed exactly 43 seconds in his fight against both Kimbo and Buentello, but beat Hugo Duarte in 43 seconds.
3) Tyson Griffin has 7 UFC fights and has won Fight of the Night honors four times and submission of the night once.
4) Alexis Shoenauer was once ranked #32 in the US in power lifting
5) Herb Dean is also a pro fighter. He lost to Joe Riggs.
6) UFC 97 will be Chuck Liddell’s 22nd UFC fight, the most in the promotions history. Tito Ortiz has 21, Matt Hughes has 20.
7) Jason Thacker was an alternate on the 1988 US Gymnastics team
8) Despite the similar appearence, Frank and Ken Shamrock are not brothers, they were both adopted. Frank is Mexican and Ken is Irish.
9)The UFC heavyweight title has only been defended 56% of the time. The 205lb and 185lb titles are at 70% while the 170lb title is at 68%*
10) Big John McCarthy originanly applied to be a fighter at UFC 2. Rorian Gracie refused, saying only one of his students, Royce, could enter.
11) Carlos Gracie had 20 kids, Helio had 9. 19 of the 29 kids had names that began with the letter R.
12) New Jersey was the first state to sanction MMA in September of 2000.
13) Chuck Liddell was in the Jack Nicholson movie “The Postman Always Rings Twice” when he was 11.
14) As of UFN 17 (only completed events count), the UFC has held 49 events in Las Vegas. Atlantic City has hosted the second most with 6, the last one being 53.
15) In the 205 weight classes in PRIDE and UFC, the last time a title fight was won with a Submission was Tito Ortiz Vs. Yuki Kondo in 2000.
16) Matt Hughes and Shonie Carter wrestled in each twice in college, getting a win each.
17) Matt Serra was the first black belt given to an American by Renzo Gracie
18) Patrick Cote was nationally ranked in Canada….as a badmiton player.
19) The most attended UFC event? UFC 83: Serra VS St. Pierre 2.
20) Kenneth Allen has a record of 1-27. In 2006 he went 1-13.
21) Phil Baroni gave the fighter formerly known as Jon Koppenhaver the nickname “War Machine.”
22) Shooto has promoted the most fights in MMA history with 1815.
23) Tait Fletcher is/was Joe Rogan’s personal bodyguard. He also did bodyguard work for Adam Sandler.
24) At the age of 18 years, 7 months and 14 days, Dan Lauzon is the youngest fighter to ever fight in the UFC.
25) UFC 12 was originally supposed to be held in Buffalo, New York. The day before the card, New York Athletic Commision would only let the fights happen if the fighters wore headgear. Luckily, Bob Meyrowitz had booked a backup arena in Alabama. He chartered three planes and flew everyone down there, arriving about 20 hours before the fights were to start.
*Interim title and interim unification fights are not included.

On 25, do you mean Dana White when you say ‘he’? Or was that before?
At the rate Zuffa is going, hold long until they catch Shooto?

Good call. I meant Bob Meyrowitz. I edited it in there, my bad.
If the UFC holds 20 cards a year (it did in 2008), with 10 fights per card, that’s 200 fights per year. They are 750 fights behind Shooto, so I would say 3-4 years.

When you said tait fletcher is/was joe rogan’s personal bodyguard what do you mean? Is he his bodyguard now or did he stop or does he work for him on and off?
Good stuff though. I hope for more of these.
I read that he is, however, the thing that I got it from was written when Tait was on TUF, so I was assuming it is outdated.
Rec it if you like it!

It’s pretty outdated so doesn’t include Nog’s loss to Mir etc.

Several fighters had more fights in PRIDE than Big Nog. Wanderlei had 28 fights, Sakuraba had 27, Igor had 26, Cro Cop had 24 and Akira Shoji had 23.
Nice work though.
Ugh, that one fact was the death of me. I just can’t get that one right, haha.
As far as the Jason Thacker one goes, that’s what I read. Maybe since he lived in the US he was on the US team, I don’t know.

To those asking for more, I’m running low on good, solid facts. Some I didn’t post because they’re hard to prove and could very easily be made up. If you have any that you can prove, let me know.
Thanks guys

The Wikipedia is your friend – almost every fighter has at least one Net-savvy friend, so those records are often more reliable than Sherdog.

A quick suggestion.
How about making the third installment with the unproven ones and then the readers can add their comments and we can possibly prove/disprove them?
OR…
Making the next installment “25 Untruths about MMA” and put things out there that were rumored, but found to be untrue, like Captain Kangaroo being Ozzy’s father??
Just a thought. And again, well done on these posts.

I might be able to get 25 more for a 3rd, and for the 4th maybe I’ll do that, not a bad suggestion. Thanks
